Like, what is going on here? The scammer knew her phone number, her email address, her home address, and her place of work, then hacked her work's web site in retribution? Is this really just a regular phone scammer? I mean, it definitely could be, it's just so bizarre.

I think the idea that the betting patterns on crypto-adjacent gambling web sites have any relationship to likely outcomes in the real world is foolish. These sites are taking advantage of right-wing gambling addicts, they're not representing expertise at all.

Brazil elected Lula again tonight. Poll averages appear to have had Lula and Flávio Bolsonaro effectively tied, maybe Bolsonaro up 1 on Lula — so not sure why the markets had this race at 80-20 Bolsonaro. Markets might miss big in the U.S. midterms in 9 days too.

This is another example of what I was talking about on the weekend. Too many people have become convinced that any random chart they see must be a representation of some fundamental truth, even when there are methodological problems big enough to fly a plane through.

2. You can find many example of this inside and outside politics, but there's a real tendency now to present numbers, free of context or methodology, as though simply having a chart or a formula is sufficient to prove a point, without thinking about whether the evidence is any good.

I doubt the writers of the BNA gave any thought to the topic, but to the extent that it's anyone's jurisdiction, shouldn't it be federal? Time zones arguably fall under "weights and measures", which is a federal responsibility.

Like, one passenger files a complaint, they get the compensation they're due, and then what happens to every other passenger on that flight? They still get nothing because they didn't individually contest the airline's decision? That's an absurd way for things to work.

The way it should work is that the airline should be *assumed* to owe all passengers for any delay/cancellation. Give the airline a brief window to contest the delay with the CTA, and then it should be required to pay all passengers automatically without any need for individual claims.

Also, to this issue more specifically, the government really needs to streamline and automate the process of compensation for delayed and cancelled flights. The idea that each passenger has to individually file a claim, and then the airline decides whether to honour it, is ridiculous.

Played a bunch of Nintendo Switch Sports Resort over the weekend with my wife. Would not recommend it solo, but definitely recommend it if you've got people to play with. We've had a blast so far. It's kind of got me thinking, you know, maybe motion controls are good in the right circumstances.

Congrats to Lula on overcoming Mark Zuckerberg and Donald Trump to defeat Hospital Pervert Jr., even as his opposition literally blocked off roads and turned off bus service during election day. Fascists are scary but they are always, 100% of the time, ultimately gigantic fucking losers.

if voting didn't matter they wouldn't be working so hard to stop you

The long-serving strongman leader of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, has conceded defeat in an election that pitted him and his right-wing party against a diverse student-led opposition movement that spent two years protesting his government.

Final Fantasy Resonance has bits where you can recruit characters from other Final Fantasy games. It includes some text about the stories of those games. But, uhh, this one for FF7 is wrong. It’s what Cloud says at the beginning of the game, but he’s lying.

This is really good. Among the many points this makes, two I want to pull out a bit: 1. I have made this argument before, but a lot of political spending *does not work* (or, more generously, there's no good way to know whether it works because it's impossible to measure the effects).

newrepublic.comHow the Consulting Class Is Eating the Democratic PartyFundraising costs gobble up most of the funds raised. Billions are spent on TV ads that have virtually no impact. Candidates may win or lose—but the consulting class always wins.

Lots of good answers in the quote replies. One I didn’t see that is really big to me is the decline in smoking, especially in public spaces. Huge improvement to the quality of public spaces, and it’s saved many lives.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

I briefly worked with a guy who worked for Obama, so 2?

Sky Marchini@sky.skymarchini.net

To flip some discourse script for a bit: what’s y’all’s Obama number (ie degrees of separation with the former president)? Mine is 3

Now this is the kind of thinking we need more of in federal politics.

Avi Lewis@avilewis.ca

The developers at BioWare know how to run the studio. They know how to make the games we all love. They should be given the first opportunity - and the federal support - to buy it and run it themselves.

70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

Not really sure what to make of the leaked Mass Effect 5 trailer. Since it's all pre-rendered, pre-production work with no gameplay, all it really shows is that they can make cut scenes that look nice. No idea if it would have been a good game. Mass Effect: Andromeda had nice trailers.

Once mass spam texts were made legal, younger donors vanished, leaving a grassroots fundraising machine that subsists on squeezing vulnerable seniors, some of whom give hundreds of times a day. It’s a horrific model. Consultants get generationally wealthy, and the party hollows out its future.

Jake Grumbach@jakemgrumbach.bsky.social

We found that as of right now 73% of your campaign donation goes back to the consultants and vendors (!!!), four times more than just 20 years ago. Only 13% to ads. Even I was shocked.

I’m digging Final Fantasy Resonance, I am extremely the target market for this game, but I’d say it feels more like an Octopath Traveller spinoff than a Final Fantasy game.

Games are made by people and game studios are made of people but game studios are also made of institutional knowledge, continuity, practices, standards, technology, resources, and IP. And those things do mean something, and it is a loss when they're discarded.

Unless there's some important information about this story that hasn't come to light yet, it's difficult to think of any believable explanations for what happened here other than anti-Semitism.

I think referendums (and I'm including things like ballot initiatives) are almost always a bad idea except in very rare cases like approving a new constitution. Otherwise we already have a method for people to indicate how they want the country to be governed: elections.

One big advantage that laws passed by a legislature have over referendums is that someone is *responsible* for those decisions. A government is at least somewhat incentivized not to make stupid decisions because voters will get angry and replace them. That doesn't exist with a referendum.

In 2016, we published potentially the largest single feature to ever appear in Game Informer magazine with a full oral history of the legendary studio, BioWare. We've made that feature available online following reports of the studio's impending closure. gameinformer.com/feature/2026...

The version of BioWare that made beloved RPGs like Baldur's Gate and Mass Effect hasn't really existed for a while now, but this is still a bummer.
