I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

An industry I know a bit about... the Indian Sandalwood market was crushed with oversupply about 7 years ago with massive plantations in the Ord scheme. The native Sandalwood market should see a lot of wheatbelt plantations reaching maturity soon.

The International Court of Justice demands that Israel return the occupied territories, including Jerusalem, and pay compensation to the Palestinians. I know it won’t make a difference but at least ICJ is on the right side of history!!!

To those striking AI data centres, I say don't stop. Plenty of work left to be done...

We’ve been talking about this for years. None of these far-right movements are organic.

The world is asking itself how on earth can the USA dig itself out of this moral and intellectual hole. The Reconstruction Papers are a solid antidote to Project 2025. I hope it all comes to fruition.

Other topics for next year's include K-12 reform (we had college reform this year from @cantb.bsky.social), Tech in government from @civicwhitaker.com, criminal justice reform from @blanksslate.bsky.social, proportional representation/democracy reform from @sltaylor.bsky.social, and more.

Denmark quasi-randomly assigned 12,000+ refugee children across towns. Those placed where social mobility is higher earned more as adults and had fewer convictions and teen births, from Daysal, Doyle Jr., Samandari, Simonsen, and Trandafir www.nber.org/papers/w35853

The Killamajig expo is on in Perth right now. Some of the euphemisms are hilarious. "We can kinetically neutralise an adversaries from 5 km away". Ghouls.

Autonomous vehicles offer to entrench, for another generation, the idea that the any other use of urban streets must come second to the rapid movement of metal boxes

Are robotaxis really "green"? - "They're EVs!"  Sure, but cars can go electric w/o autonomy. - "They'll be shared!"  Doubtful. Shared ridehail has fizzled. - "They'll boost transit!" Ridehail made the same claim. Nope. In fact, AVs could worsen the environment by inducing much more driving.

The destruction of Gaza is the destruction of the whole world. The Israeli government, with the eager assistance of the United States, is laying the groundwork for for how we respond to genocide and atrocities in the 21st century.

I just donated to ASRC. Not just because they need to get their food vans back on the street, but cause these angels do amazing work every other day of the year. You can donate too: donate.asrc.org.au/freedom

The Victorian Police are investigating after our 2 ASRC Catering Social Enterprise Vans were stolen. To those who have reached out asking how they can help. There’s two ways: Chip in to help cover what insurance won’t: donate.asrc.org.au Call 000 if you spot either of our ASRC Catering white vans

Quick poll: Who here has never, ever, ever used an AI program. I've not even tried one for shits and gigs, but watched hundreds of others do it. Am I in the minority for using my own cognitive skills?

I had students submit a 30 question written assessment entirely resolved by AI (it was super easy to spot). They failed. I said keep using AI if you want, but you'll fail the course. They were indignant!

'A survey of Australians as young as 13 found misogyny can predict extremist violence more strongly than ideology, religion or time online.' The under-16 social media ban won't address this. We have to start having the necessary difficult conversations to challenge gendered disrespect everywhere.

A 63 year old human went swimming in the ocean and made body moevemrnts very similar to shark food. A shark minding its own business noticed the object resembling food and as the shark’s parents and predecessors have done for millions of years, the shark decided to have a bite. Australians 🤦‍♂️

Hmm wonder how the press responded to our calls for a universal road user charge... It's actually more funny than disappointing, but the ragebait headlines are quite entertaining.

And what, pray tell, do they intend on doing with these bombs? Who do we think they'll be dropping them on? And are we all aware of this intention? Because that's more than complicit. Thats party to genocide.
