I’m taking advantage of my nephew’s PS4 to finally play DETROIT: BECOME HUMAN and I’m incredibly impressed so far. I just want to replay the first ten minutes over and over again, the game’s reputation as a cyberpunk masterpiece already seems well-earned.

This really isn't an understatement. Tony Rayns was a titan in the distribution and celebration of films and filmmakers from South Korea, Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan, and China. He was also incredibly kind when I first met him decades ago, and our paths crossed many times over the years.

Rest in peace Tony Rayns, quite possibly the most consequential Western figure in spreading the worldwide recognition of East Asian cinema.

Better late than never! My first monograph, EXTREME ASIA: THE RISE OF CULT CINEMA FROM THE FAR EAST, is *finally* coming out in a trendy and affordable paperback edition. Get yours on September 30th!

It’s always fantastic being on TrekRanks, and this was a *very* special one for me. Jim and Jenn were on amazing form with their picks, and the conversation couldn’t have been more fun. The perfect way to celebrate the lovable titan that is Montgomery Scott!

NEW! We celebrate the miracle worker on a special TrekRanks. It’s the “Top 5 Scotty Episodes,” one of Trek's most popular characters, portrayed across TOS, the Kelvin Timeline & SNW by James Doohan, Simon Pegg & Martin Quinn. The haggis is in the fire for sure! 🔊 www.trekranks.com/trekranks-podcast

The new Kiki’s Delivery Service poster for its impending IMAX re-release in North America is spectacular. I love that they’ve used one of Yoshifumi Kondo’s pieces of concept art rather than a still from the film. I need this framed and on my office wall!

Weirdly thrilled to see a ship named the USS Miyazaki in this week's episode of Starfleet Academy! It's nice to know there are some Studio Ghibli fans in the Federation of the distant future (and reciprocally, I did manage to sneak a Star Trek reference into my book on Kiki's Delivery Service).

This week’s Starfleet Academy offers a beautiful story of a warrior’s ongoing journey to self-actualization, and one of Star Trek’s best Klingon episodes in decades. What we’re getting with Jay-Den Kraag’s character development is already on a par with Ma’ah’s superb arc on Lower Decks.

My first impressions of STARFLEET ACADEMY are very positive. The premise bubbles with optimistic momentum, and the performances are predictably superb. Holly Hunter and Gina Yashere are already set to be one of Star Trek's all-time great Captain/First Officer duos.

Castle in the Sky is the latest Ghibli film to get a theatrical re-release in South Korea (following Nausicaa and Princess Mononoke last year). Absolutely cannot wait to finally see this masterpiece on a big screen.

When I was ten years old I was absolutely obsessed with the Buck Rogers TV series, so I’m incredibly moved by Gil Gerard’s last words: “My life has been an amazing journey. Don’t waste your time on anything that doesn’t thrill you or bring you love. See you out somewhere in the cosmos.”

For me, it’s The Princess Bride that will always be his untouchable masterpiece. This is such genuinely horrifying news, it’s just awful.

The cultural impact of Rob Reiner cannot be understated. Legend isn't big enough a word. It goes to 11. You can't handle the truth. As you wish. I'll have what she's having. I'm your number one fan. You guys wanna see a dead body? The very idea of a bucket list. The West Wing. All from his movies.

Took my nine-year-old to see this first thing this morning, on a lovely massive Dolby screen, and it’s the most I’ve ever enjoyed it. Sam’s little speech at the end really got me.

Peter Jackson’s 2002 film “The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers”, which is currently being shown in selected South Korean theaters, is an effective middle chapter of its ambitious trilogy. My trudging review. kaist455.com/2025/12/07/t...

Trying not to get my hopes up for this - but look at that arm!

"The Ghost In The Shell" new anime series (by Science Saru) will air in January 2026 in Japan in a new TV block called "Hi-Anibal!!" on Kantele/FujiTV. theghostintheshell.jp/en/news/the-...

#SUPERMAN is super fun! It doesn’t need to be a perfect film to perfectly set the tone for the new DC movieverse, and I’m enthusiastically optimistic about what will come next.

Yes! The first arc of this series was sensational! Complex but satisfying plotting and some of the most charming and well-written versions of DC’s icons ever. I’m totally invested in what’s next.

GOTHAM BY GASLIGHT: A LEAGUE FOR JUSTICE begins with a recap of THE KRYPTONIAN AGE — so if you haven't read that yet, consider this a spoiler warning!

Deeply impressed with the work of Project A34K on ALIEN 3: THE LEGACY CUT. It's probably the most I've ever enjoyed the film; it's still disquietingly bleak, but I do admire its adamant refusal to be the sequel anyone wanted or expected.

Drawing my Fictional Crushes in Order of How Many Other People Liked Them on Bluesky Part 1: Fukuo the Baker from Kiki's Delivery Service- he was by far the most popular in this very scientific method of sorting my fictional crushes by outside popularity haha. (Drew this on stream earlier)!

My #comicsdna - four favourites from my youth that have stayed with me, to varying degrees, ever since.

Alex Segura@alexsegura.com

Alright, what's your #comicsdna? The comics and books that were formative to you. At least four, more if you're nasty.

The definitive text on Lynch’s DUNE and genuinely one of the best books about filmmaking I’ve ever read. Physically it’s a thing of beauty but it’s also incredibly engaging and alive with the vibrant personalities of everyone involved.

2nd printing of my book from @1984prods.bsky.social! Note the blue “eyes of Ibad” gilding. Made corrections/added a few celeb cameos but it’s mostly the same tome. No paperback plans yet, so this is another chance for #dune fans to get the hardback… with Lynch’s DUNE turning 40 this December 14!

It really was an especially good one! Extra-nostalgic and timeless, with a wonderfully well-used guest star.

I just watched the latest episode of #StarTrekLowerDecks "Fully Dilated" im my Freistunde (planning period) and now I'll have to explain to my students why I'm all teary-eyed. 🥲 I'll just say I watched a wonderful episode of #StarTrek - they know me well enough, they'll understand! :-)

The new The Old Fools has a timeless Bob Dylan impersonation and some wholly unnecessary mockery of pretty much everything. Don't blame us, this is "your world" and we "just live in it" boomerphobes. We don't need you to like it, we just "want the hurt to stop..." pod.link/1774465485

Now framed and hanging on my office wall, the pride of my #Dune collection: "Vanguard Battalion,” an original work of art by Walter Velez, used for the fondly-remembered Dune CCG produced by Last Unicorn Games in the late 1990s.

My big laugh in this week’s #LowerDecks was the turbolift proudly depositing two increasingly lost characters in the “Maintenance Labyrinth.”

One of my earliest big laughs from #StarTrekLowerDecks came in the sixth episode ("Terminal Provocations") with this soft voice in the distance saying, "Damn, Starbase 80?!" Finally getting to visit the infamous SB80 this week did not disappoint.

You are up to date.
