JUST POSTED: Today at The NYT we are publishing a major investigation into how President Trump used his executive powers to expose millions of Americans to greater cancer risks. A six month-long investigation built on more than 10,000 pages of FOIA records. Read it www.nytimes.com/2026/10/24/c...

so restricting Ukraine's Starlink was Musk's idea, but after Moscow took advantage he became "alarmed about the possibility of adverse consumer reaction in Europe" to the "night of carnage" and denied responsibility I mean, it sounds like typical Elon

🧵I remember sitting in the audience at a few space conferences and recall the conversations in some of the infamous hospitality suites ( aka hostility suites) back in the late 1980s early 1990s. A thought back then was that the whole space endeavor should be given to the private sector...

This bad boy can fit so many nationalized space companies inside it you wouldn’t believe it

Just came across this cool artifact: “Viking Lander Biological Instrument, Life on Mars” matchbox. (“The most complex instrument ever flown “) From a party in Pasadena for first Mars landing in 1976. Handed down to me by the late, great Shirley Arden (Carl Sagan’s long time executive assistant). 🧪

How do you know? Do you know what makes a mind? Or how it works? Or what happens when we create a sufficiently complex machine that recognizes patterns, connects information and iterates in novel ways? If so, you are the only person on Earth who does.

I am questioning him because his interviews don't make sense. This is what he said on NBC MTP: "You're building a human level or superhuman level mind without understanding what it wants or thinks or the way it think." AI is SOFTWARE. We don't think of software as "new mind".

It is fascinating to see Jacob Coxon attacked from the left “He’s making it up to boost share values” & the right “He’s making it up to force regulation”. This is a classic case where the precautionary principle should apply. In my field, with Planetary Protection, we observe international protocols and take extreme measures to guard against possible risks which are, objectively, much more improbable. It’s the sane and responsible approach. (2/2) 🧪

(Nobody really thinks it’s likely returned samples could harm or destroy life, or spacecraft could harm an alien biosphere. But can’t say risk = 0, & consequences could be dire. So assume the worst, isolate samples, clean spacecraft, avoid contaminating possible habitats, often at great expense.)

#Nepal needs $5bn to rebuild from the #floods. Oil giants Exxon, Chevron & Shell made $36.5bn profit in the past quarter alone. The #LossandDamage Fund can provide only up to $20 million in emergency support. Shared thoughts with @stuti.bsky.social on why this is a test for #climatejustice.

There’s no legitimate purpose for ICE to have this information. There are a ton of nefarious ones, though.

There are 2 huge threats to the survival of our democracy. They are related but distinct. Once we rescue our country from the attempts by Trump & his cronies to subvert elections, we will be left with the task of clawing power back from oligarchs & corporations. www.nytimes.com/2026/08/31/u...

It’s odd, and a little disappointing, that @barbmcquade.bsky.social (whom I admire greatly) would assume that everyone is reporting differently from her on this because we must just “believe what we read on social media posts”, when we’re actually reporting on what we see directly on Google Maps.
