I’m petty sure that Farage and Reform are going to carry on heading down in the polls. Friday’s by-election result is likely to harm him whatever. Even winning will look and sound ludicrous.

We are currently Prime Minister-less. That mystical space between that cannot be defined. Merlin used to distract the populace at times like this with some magic. Dragons and beasts, battling for our attention while arrangements were made in the background for a smooth transition of power.

Chris Mason, BBC I get very excited about by-elections. So much so that my mum cuts down my sugar intake in the run up to them. This is the most important by-election in my lunchtime. In fact I’d go as far as to say this is the most important by-election since the last one. Etc etc. Night.

The idea that the UK needs to spend many millions of pounds extra on defence is never challenged. Suggest extra money for anything else and the media plus the Tories shriek in horror.

Is Russia really going to invade us? Is money the way to stop it? What is the role of military lobby groups, veterans in parliament and in the media? Why not talk up the prospects of peace? Etc etc.

This has just arrived. It looks amazing. Hopefully I can get some time over the weekend to delve in.

The PM thinks it’s his business to decide what protests are allowed and which should be banned I find that disgusting. The continuing rowing back on democratic rights should worry us all.

Remember when Iranian protesters were being leveraged to manufacture consent for this war? Now, Trump calls all Iranians "animals" and says he will bomb the country "into the Stone Age."

An example of Douglas Camfield's attention to detail, in 1965 writing quite a tall order for avant-garde composer Tristram Cary. It includes one of the earliest character sketches of Katarina. Also a nice early instance of the serial's overarching title. #DoctorWho

Breaking: on two counts, the High Court has ruled that the Labour government's proscription of the campaign group Palestine Action was unlawful – a win for its co-founder Huda Ammori, who sought a judicial review of the ban

The state must now back down and end the ban on Palestine Action. The continuing proscription is an abuse of freedom of expression and assembly

Leaving the court now, the government lawyers look... pissed

Inside Court 4 now at the Royal Courts of Justice in London for the Palestine Action ban judicial review hearing

It’s a good job MPs are two sword lengths apart in the Commons. I thought Starmer was about to butcher Ed Davey in PMQs. I don’t think I’ve seen him so angry.

I listened to Steve Reed on Radio 4 this morning defending the indefensible and then Starmer himself waxing his untenables all over the shop. The only thing he should have been saying this morning is “I quit”.

Much though I have enjoyed all of my many trips to the USA over forty or so years I have realised that I cannot go there any more until there is what we might call ‘regime change’ Like Iran they are killing their own citizens. Tragic

I’ve spent the last few days in Croydon. I have a lot of affection for the town I lived in for 13 years. I’ve been taken aback by how much it’s changed. I’m quite sad about the neglect it’s received. I left as gentrification was being mooted. I’m not sure it’s worked out.

Boris Johnson’s purge of the One Nation Tories in 2019 continues to haunt the party. The subsequent swing to a more hardline position and Reform-like policies looks inauthentic and unapologetic. They lack the sort of talent to change this I feel.

I was just writing about how the bad guys in Doctor Who often have buffoonish master plans only to read in the actual news that Trump intends to raise punitive taxes on Americans until Europe gives up & gives him Greenland

God, I am so sick of the word "franchise". It's a corporate term that should never be applied to creative works. It reduces them to units of product with no lasting value. McDonalds is a franchise. Starbucks is a franchise. Lord of the Rings, James Bond, Doctor Who etc are fictional series.
