Black women are making decisions about our hair in an information vacuum and in a society that still polices our hair in schools and workplaces. As Paul Mooney quipped, if it’s relaxed, they’re relaxed. If it’s nappy, they ain’t happy. Our hair is personal AND political. And we deserve answers.

Millions of Black women are wearing these products for weeks at a time. Hair braiders handle them all day. Heat is applied which can release chemical compounds as vapor into the air. Braiding hair sits directly on the scalp. And the FDA has said nothing about it.

Braids and protective styles aren’t just a style choice. A lot of us stopped using relaxers because of links to uterine cancer—and it burns like hell when applied. Protective styles with potentially dangerous braiding hair are often the least bad option in a system that still punishes Black hair.

And before anyone says “well, just don’t wear it”— You must understand WHY Black women wear braids. Natural hair is still policed. Still called unprofessional. And that’s despite over two dozen states passing the CROWN Act which prohibits discrimination against hair texture and protective styles.

That doesn’t automatically mean the hair is dangerous. An Australia YouTuber who’s a chemist has taken issue with Consumer Reports’ findings, saying that a person would have to eat a yarn’s ball worth of hair for it to be truly harmful. But the point is, we don’t know because the FDA won’t tell us.

This isn’t a personal failure on the part of Black women who wear these protective styles. The FDA does not regulate braiding hair. No testing. No warning labels. We’re just buying the hair, installing it, and wearing it for weeks against our scalps.

The Consumer Reports investigation found lead, among other chemicals, in 29/30 products. After last year’s Consumer Report found that synthetic hair has a lot of chemicals, a lot of us switched to human hair or plant-based hair as a “safer” alternative. Well that’s not necessarily safe either.

What happened with Cesar Chavez shows the danger of letting anyone become too much of the celebrated face of a movement. It was terrible to be in a place where people were worried that the truth about his actions would harm the farm workers labor movement.
