The Cost of Borders is finally under contract! Thank you to my incredible agent @sarahburnes.bsky.social to @naomischneid.bsky.social & @ucpress.bsky.social for believing in this project & to all the people from Palestine to Haiti to Cameroon to Iran who shared their stories with me!
Naguib Mahfouz - Nobel Prize Lit (1988), Ahmed Zewail - Wolf Prize (1993), Nobel Prize Chemistry (1999), Omar Yaghi (Jordan) – Nobel Prize Chemistry (2025), Hisham Matar - Pulitzer (2017) - even if none of that were true, judging 500 million people by a prize tally is bigotry of the largest order.
NYC—come on through for this event next week!! We’ll talk human rights, war and revolution, and probably some reactions from whatever happens on election night.

Is someone writing a book on why people vote fascists back in even after they do all their fascism.
Inshallah Brazil makes another choice but the fact that it’s so close is terrifying (speaking from within a trump II America)
GOP does nothing but gin up culture wars. Meanwhile:
— GOP slashed SNAP benefits to 5+ million Americans, forcing them to turn to food banks.
— Trump's tariffs and war spurred inflation, making it more expensive to eat at The Cheesecake Factory. Prices are now ~13% higher than when he took office.
Awful mothering aside, also this is a TERRIBLE answer because it can be used to describe the vast majority of people. Like such a synopsis of the AI hellscape we find ourselves in.
So this is horrific. The DoJ is offering funding to "support foundational research on gender dysphoria, its treatment, and the perpetration of violence and violent behavior."
They are trying to gin up data to label trans people as terrorists.

Another mass detention of activists in the West Bank, this time in Masafer Yatta.
No mass detentions of Israeli settler terrorists. Instead, activists who came to help Palestinians harvest their olives are the ones being detained.
The organising by Lula's voters in Brazil right now is astonishing. They still might not win but they've put millions on the street and they have shifted the polls back to a tie -despite, in a friend's words, fighting "everyone -Trump, Meta, legacy media, the rich, betting companies, evangelicals".
In one video, a fascist politician was threatening a group of Indigenous people that he would withdraw their funding if they didn't vote for Bolsonaro. One of them replied, so what. We won't vote for you. You don't fund us anyway. Iconic. X

I feel like there need to be organizing classes offered somewhere as part of general education because going through this thing about 3k getting cancelled in our kids school you realize people have no idea how to strategically move as a group to a goal
lease allow me to gripe on how you cannot claim to care about "Childcare for All" if you deny afterschool care to working parents.
My son is in NYC 3k & was registered for afterschool care in an NGO operated within the school. This Wed at 4, we were informed our last day would be today (10/19) 🧵
As @mayor.nyc.gov & @governor.ny.gov announce 2K rollout today to huge applause - we need to ask ourselves if these programs actually *work* or if they're political theater.
Are working families actually able to rely on them in a capitalist hellscape of this 2026 American economy?
Thanks to those who supported my earlier post of this thread; realized it was riddled with typos and reposted.
Happy to talk to any journalists interested in taking up this story/ write an op ed do whatever else. I'm so exhausted.

There are centers all over the city operating on this same license, serving 3K students, that will also inevitably be shut down.
Now we have a choice to make: some will quit their jobs, some will piece together ad hoc care, others will put their kids back into daycare.
And meanwhile, our children, my son, who really loved the programming, and made friends, and just got settled to public school experiences a difficult disruption in his young life.

We are told that there's simply nothing to be done, that the regulator cannot include our children. We get no straight answer about the 6 years prior - seems to be, as one parent put it, an "oops" 🤷🏽♀️.
Regulation which did not care for 6 years, but now finds it imperative to IMMEDIATELY exclude.
Meawhile, working families - 63 of them - are scrambling to find safe care.
And this ins't just an us issue. Throughout the city & state parents find themselves struggling to utilize public school offerings without access to free or even (in our case) affordable afterschool care.

The program had operated for six years serving 3K students without incident. In an audit this month, however, the regulator - the state's Office of Family and Child Services (OFCS) decided that the waiver the program had from them NEVER qualified them to care for 3K students, only 3yo PreK students
In the following days, I lead a campaign to reach electeds, many of whom wrote letters in our defense - incl Gale Brewer, Jose Serrano, Jill Rosenthal, and Micah Lasher.
I wrote the District. I am still texting with the Mayor's Office.
But there is no movement.

Despite the recent opening of the secret 'shadow court', advocates still report concerns over the court hearings at 26 Federal Plaza, citing rapid processing and lack of due process.
There’s this thing that people do right now like “don’t judge me i used AI lol” like if you object you’re the prude and it’s like babes this isn’t a scam you’re running on a corporation, this is you participating in our society’s demise. Please let’s just be literate.

More about ICE's shooting of Oscar Belgal in Bronx:
Agents didn't have proper warrant
After they shot Belgal, his son began yelling that masked men killed his dad
Belgal is now in solitary
The left side of his face is numb
He can't hear from one ear

On being a parent in NYC Public Schools: we just got a message from our afterschool care provider that they could no longer provide care to our child due to a regulator deciding - after 7 years of operating - that they weren't allowed to offer care to 3 year olds.
Anyway, the force of 20 years of organizing descended on that PTA chat between @nickocchiuto.bsky.social and I but this idea that parents can somehow just cover half a day of childcare in 48 hours notice is another way that inequality operates in these spaces...
Also if you know someone high up..
Debt is a powerful instrument, like nuclear power. It can be used to good ends (allowing people to get an education or buy a house) or bad.
I hate when people blame capitalism for something that has nothing to do with it.
Student debt is at the heart of why campus sexual violence derails victims’ lives too.
The primary reason victims drop out of college is because they are encouraged to take temporary leaves of absence—and then they can’t return until they are current on student loan payments.
An acquaintance is being sexually harassed at this job. I see him about once a week and ask how it’s going. Today he confessed, he can’t afford to leave because of his student loans.
The point of debt at a national level, at an indivisible level, is docility. It’s capital’s greatest asset.
I haven’t thought of the word bimbo for a long time, because it’s derogatory and has been abolished and I’m a feminist etc. but I did think about it a lot today.
