People who know me from elsewhere who are part of a new migration wave, please don't be offended if I don't follow back. My feed is about as active as I can manage following right now.

Leaving aside all the racism and ignorance (and there's a LOT there), the ones who don't produce science or math or literature are the religious fundamentalists. Religious fundamentalists tend to produce only orthodoxy, repression, and torment, regardless of the claimed faith. We're headed there.

RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."

Now, is the Islamic world currently underrepresented in the top tier of intellectual endeavor? Maybe, maybe not, but given a century or so of colonial exploitation combined with incomplete work to address structural racism in academic fields, that's not a flaw of the Moslems trying to succeed.

(Wow, sorry about that, I've known the correct spelling for decades and usually catch myself and fix it, but old habits can be hard to break. Speaking of structural racism and its lingering effects....)

Demanding a minority group prove their loyalty to the ruling class is a solid step on the road to pogroms. No amount of declaring such loyalty will stop the inexorable march, it will just smooth the road.

We once again remind the president that American Jews don't need to be "loyal" to a candidate or party to be both American and Jewish and it's unconscionable to say they should be "ashamed" or cast out for failing to do so.

Lying about what your political opponent has or has not said or done is easy, and it rarely has any significant downside. Media will continue to show clips you spouting the lies even after showing (usually implicitly, by having shown the opponent say things) that they were lies.

Very few media outlets will just introduce you by saying something like, "Candidate continued to lie about their opponent," for fear of lawsuits, or simply because their corporate overlords are on your side. When the rare correction occurs, you can just shout over it until they give up.

(Seriously, over the weekend El-Sayed's opponent was confronted by the fact he has repeatedly denied connection to the Muslim Brotherhood, and the MAGAt just shouted louder and louder that the newsperson was wrong. LalalalalaIcan'thearyou levels of infantile crap.)

Goddammit.

My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.

Remember, LLMs write like that because educated people write like that, and the writing of educated people figures heavily in the early training data. I'm sure LLMs could be trained to not write like that, but it serves the oligarchs' goals to make people mistrustful of the writing of the educated.

While I certainly don't put something so clumsy and transparent past our regime, these "the machine changed my votes" stories come up every October lately. I expect most (if not all) cases are fatfinger errors combined with people going in expecting chicanery and being primed to see it.

As we approach the midterms, remember that the Alt National Park Service is a merch sales operation claiming without evidence to be a group of federal employees, and is not a genuine source of news about elections of any kind. Please get your election info from a local, reputable source.

If you have an easy time picking your favorite book, you might need to read more books. Everyone should read enough (eventually, some of y'all are young) that there's more than one Really Good Book in their past.

If there were any justice in the world, every day would be #WorldWombatDay, but today is the official day to celebrate these glorious creatures that crush their enemies with their buttocks, dig burrows tens of metres long, constantly regrow their teeth, have babies called wombatlets, and poop cubes.

So, what's the over/under on whether evidence of Vivek engaged in sex crimes or child abuse comes out before or after the election?

Start mower. It's making a concerning thunking sound, like something's stuck on the blade. Keep going, and it stops thunking. Look behind me to see chunks of (thankfully empty) wasp nest on the ground. Well, that could've been VERY BAD. (I last used it ten days ago, fast-building wasp.)

(I hadn't cleaned out the underdeck of the mower last time because I was feeling pretty wobbly when I was done and just went inside, so today I had just figured there was a clump of grass/weeds in there and kept going to see if it cleared itself.)

Miskatonic University, the only school where I will accept "woke" as an actual threat. Please, do not awaken anything on campus grounds.

The name of New Mexico is funny because it's one of those things that you'd think is really simple (oh, it's it used to be part of old Mexico, so we'll call it New Mexico!), but it's much more complex New Mexico as the name for the area predates Mexico by several hundred years!

Owen Barcala@obarcala.bsky.social

But, like, New America wouldn't make any sense because this is still the original America and... You know what, forget it

The Muslim Brotherhood could publicly disavow El-Sayed at this point and it wouldn't stop the Tommies.

James Goodwin@jamesgoodwin.bsky.social

El-Sayed is going to forced to disavow the Muslim Brotherhood at least a dozen times more before the midterms. The point is clearly not the answer. The point is the question. It's basically push-polling.

This is Tommy. Tommy is a plant, recruited online to go cause trouble. Let's all be glad he was just there to try a gotcha question that failed, and not violence...because that's coming.

Abdul El-Sayed@abdulelsayed.bsky.social

This is Tommy. Tommy had a question about my allegiances. Listen to the end to hear about his.

Note, JFK wasn't the first possible Catholic President (or President who happens to be Catholic), just the first Catholic candidate against whom the "do you report to the Pope?" attack failed. Al Smith tried a generation earlier, when the bigots hadn't been as distracted from Catholicism yet.

Trump Media is trying to spin this as El Sayed going off on a "three minute diatribe," but he keeps stopping to let Tommy answer and maybe elaborate on his point, but the guy has his script and no idea how to improvise, so he just keeps repeating "I haven't heard you disavow the Muslim Brotherhood."

SCOOP: 'Tommy' from the now-viral exchange with Abdul El-Sayed is Thomas Teepell, a former staffer for Republican Senator Josh Hawley with close ties to Christian Nationalist Sean Feucht. He's the son of a former Bobby Jindal staffer whose consultant work was instrumental in getting Hawley elected.

Update: about 4 hours later and we still don't have admin access so we still can't post to the No Kings instagram account. This isn't slowing down the the 3,000+ early vote events today. We will drive the biggest early vote in history. But this should be a flashing alarm about what's to come.

🚨 EXCLUSIVE: No Kings organizer Ezra Levin SOUNDS ALARM after Meta suspended the movement’s Instagram during nationwide protests. LEVIN: “We might be seeing something similar from Meta in our country right now.” “We're not gonna stop organizing against this regime.”

Don't feel bad about being slow to get a joke. I just now realized that Mr. Satan's daughter Videl's name is an anagram for Devil. (Dragonball Z characters.)

(I can't even hide behind the fact that he was Hercule in the US dub, since I knew at the time that he was really Mr. Satan.)

I think I assumed at the time her name was a vegetable pun (vidalia onions) since she was clearly gonna be marrying a Saiyan, and outside of Goku's family they all have fruit or vegetable pun names.

Turning on the surveillance bit, it does confirm the Flock camera I noticed outside a nearby Walmart the other day. And another on the other side of the interstate I hadn't noticed. And other pairs on either side of the interstate wherever a road has an overpass or underpass.

Back before I discovered comics and TTRPGs, I was a baseball fan, and the Brewers were the home team. I even managed to get some Seattle Pilots trading cards from the year that team moved to Milwaukee, printed before the move so technically inaccurate as soon as they came out.

Telling a writer of licensed property fiction that "Your reputation will not recover from this," in reference to contradicting their fanon is, like, an absolute Karen move. "DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM?" levels of fannish egocentrism.
