With the preface that I only share this knowledge in case any of it is interesting to you, and not really the relating of any universal method, I noticed one stylistic tendency in this old-project edit that shows how things have changed. I'm doing much to move the text over to my new way.

And I even hopped into the elder's head, once, which had no precedent in the scene; a 3-person head hop. Rheb should also be forced to speculate about *that* man's motivations; expecting him to hold something back to his advantage when helping his own son negotiate with a frighteningly powerful man.

I feel like an insecure tendency to overexplain led me down that path, but as my writing processes mature, I am willing to give more credit to the reader. It is most likely to their benefit that I do.

What will be asked by the elder and his son? What does Rheb fear the response will be? We only know from the end of the previous scene that Maximian can easily guess they will ask something of him, as could anyone, and we have witnessed him being snippy and impatient. What will he do regardless?

I nearly carried that out the first time around, but for a couple of instances where we hop into Maximian's head during the exchange--and these are enough to kill the tension. Instead, we better place ourselves in Rheb's perspective by having to scrutinize his every line, gesture, and expression.

Emperor Maximian & his war party are invited to camp by a clan elder and his son, who have in exchange offered a boon related to the war party's mission. We already suspect an ulterior motive from the previous scene. I chose to present this from the perspective of his adviser Rheb, a main character.

While Rheb has kept his role, he had a spat with Maximian earlier and is in an unspoken doghouse of sorts. He observes the exchange to follow not knowing what Maximian knows or suspects, his only window being the tendencies we have already witnessed in the text.

This book in its 2020 form (whether that was indeed the final or just the last of which I kept a copy) often carries two perspectives/characters whose thoughts you can read per scene. While the head hopping presents clearly *who* you're reading at a given time, I just don't do it that way now.

Clarity is not the only factor. What the perspective character in a scene *doesn't* or *shouldn't* know informs the reader's experience and add a refreshing layer of suspense. There is one example I just dealt with where I feel that I nearly had it right the first time.

From Prince Ewald the Brave onward, scene breaks gained the dual use of marking perspective shifts; if only the latter, I should leave a clear indication that this is so. I stick with one perspective per section and I clarify this for the reader. If you think that's confusing, it's an improvement.

The further I get into this editing project, the more I wonder whether the only edition I had backed up of my novel at the time of my moving to Ingram Spark was not really the final edition. Fortunately, this book has not been a fast seller, and I should have it edited and reuploaded in a few weeks

I keep much better track of my newer works. I even have editing repositories of the latest few, to show my work. But all projects prior to Prince Ewald the Brave have messy record-keeping and/or occurred 2 to 3 computers ago. I have since made a great effort to organize everything.

And the current editing project is the only project prior to PEtB that remained on sale, given that the three before it are being rewritten, renamed, and re-covered entirely. So, it's the odd one out.

I think we underestimate the appeal of antigambling politics because every problem gambler is surrounded by 3-10 people who are absolutely sick of their shit.

There was a fucking hole in our planet’s *atmosphere* Like a legit, no joke, “this will unravel our entire ecosystem” hole in the world, and then we fixed it by working together across national and political lines As a species we decided, “we will survive” Let’s do that some more

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

Four chapters into a 17-chapter edit and I am already satisfied that this was a good idea. It will take some reformatting to make it all fit within a comparable page count, but this kind of edit won't involve adding scenes. That word count is already dropping, which will help.

One simple edit which has nothing to do with the words is the choice to turn the map art sideways and let it expand to take up as much of its page as possible. I do not appear to have the option to make it any larger than this in Atticus, but I feel it is a considerable improvement.

I turned around and did that for The Last Gift-Knight as well. The original version of that map is larger than any book I would put it in (pencil and paper, framed, and sitting in my closet), so it seemed all the more criminal that it ended up so small in the release day version.

I didn't have the same editing process in 2019, let alone experience with getting books right. I can tell that I had initially gone through this between five and eight times and went "Eh, I must have caught it all by now." Which means I'm not surprised at what I let slip through.

Today, I embarked on an editing project of my oldest currently available release: "Alathea: Goddess & Empress". This will not be a full rewrite/rename/re-cover project of the scale as "The Last Gift-Knight" or the next release which is a yet to be titled remake of "The Crown Princess' Voyage".

So if I open it up as it currently is and think "This prose needs improvement," then I should do something. But the challenge here is to keep almost everything about the story the same except for the manner in which it shows and tells.

This is also a good exercise to put me in the headspace for the upcoming project. This book ends pretty close to where the next project begins. Characters overlap with the next book. I will have a challenge there to introduce this character again without repeating the contents of "Alathea".

I let this book "Alathea" be a holdover from a prior era. Original art work, different processes from another time in my life, and as a dark fantasy, different in nature than my other works. Except that I notice it attracts plenty of attention on its own, and I'm still selling it to people.

I have a weird announcement. On and off for the last five years, as a contract writer, and as a senior writer on staff, I've been hoping to be allowed to say where I worked. Today I finally got the green light: I've been working on the next Mass Effect. 1/6
