Hello, Bluesky! I'm trying this out with my own PDS. I'm not completely sold on this platform, but I do like that I can follow some people I've missed in the past few years of mostly being on the fediverse.

Literally every podcast I’ve ever recorded has more parents of trans kids’ voices in it than @nytimes.com ‘s Pulitzer-nominated podcast about gender care for trans kids. (Because mine have one (me) and theirs had none (none).)

The wait is over. 🏆Congratulations to the 2026 #Pulitzer Prize winners – from scrappy local newsrooms to moving immigration coverage, we’ve put together a full list of the distinguished winners and finalists. Read it now: www.poynter.org/reporting-ed...

Look, this isn't a good reason to hurt Kenvue. The fact that the company exists as a way for J&J to limit their exposure in talc and opioid lawsuites is a much better reason.

“Kirk & I were on different sides of most political arguments. We were on the same side of the continued possibility of American politics.” So it’s personal? B/c if you were a Black woman or transgender, Kirk would not imagine you having any role in the future of American politics.

It's extremely weird if you've never paid any attention to US politics. Abortion and same-sex marriage are just two recent examples where the federal government actively worked against an overwhelming majority opinion. When you call everything unprecedented, it erases history.

Matt Darling@besttrousers.bsky.social

It's incredibly weird that folks have convinced themselves that the Covid vaccines - which had an ~82^% take up rate - were unpopular.

Also, background checks for gun purchases is supported even more than the COVID vaccine. Is there a federal law requiring it? No. Can we expect one any time soon? Also, no. The longer it takes us to understand that anti-vax groups act like the NRA or anti-abortion groups, the worse it will get.

Just a reminder that there's no reason to invoke Islamophobia for something that is very much a product of American Christianity. The Taliban don't need to pull these mental gymnastics because their laws explicitly state that Afghanistan is an Islamic country.

Alex Aronson@alexaronson.bsky.social

White Christian Taliban shit right here. Time to stop tiptoeing around it. These people are fanatics pursuing a Holy War. It’s a critical piece of the threat assessment that should inform our strategies. (Psst. They’re not just going to hand back power.)

The thing about the Equifax leak years ago is that smaller leaks like this just don't compare. Plus, the credit companies all funnel money back and forth for "monitoring" after these breaches, which are full of predatory auto-renewals. The result is that they MAKE money after breaches.

Zack Whittaker@zackwhittaker.com

NEW: Credit reporting giant TransUnion has confirmed a data breach involving more than 4.4 million customers' personal information. TransUnion claims "no credit information was accessed" in the late-July breach, which it said involves its U.S. consumer support operations.

Of course, that ignores another predatory thing they do where they try to convince you that securing your credit requires a subscription even though freezing your credit is free. But if you don't know the right words to search for...THEY MAKE MONEY BY LOSING YOUR DATA!

I mean...yeah. This whole amendment sounds like a bunch of special interest carve-outs. The fact that most of our council cannot comprehend the follow-on effects of such large exemptions is an excellent point showing how they are not equipped for their jobs.

Erica C. Barnett@ericacbarnett.bsky.social

Rinck reiterates that "I do not think we should be exploring special carveouts in this legislation without a actual analysis of the full fiscal impact" of the exemptions, and says she'll propose an increase to the tax rate to offset these exemptions if they psas.

Ah yes, and then they double down to ensure that the loss of tax revenue is as painful as possible.

Erica C. Barnett@ericacbarnett.bsky.social

Rivera and Nelson both express concern (i.e. opposition) to raising the B&O tax rate to offset the special tax exemptions Rivera just sponsored (which passed) for Fred Hutch and Children's Hospital.

Counterpoint: tech companies rarely invent new tech Source: over 20 years working in tech, including almost 17 years Amazon and Salesforce Also, it's well-proven that age verification does not protect children. It only endangers privacy.

stasinthesky.bsky.social@stasinthesky.bsky.social

The EU is doing what is necessary to help kids. Tech companies invent new tech all the time so an age verification app is not a problem. And automatically having settings that protect kids accounts is also easy. Glad to see some people care enough to take on this major issue.

Yeah? Well, human beings with an iota of empathy call it pure evil.

I'm not going to challenge Nelson's statement here, but it's pretty meaningless. In Seattle, you can also say that we can't allow more housing density because most of the comments are about trees. These both may be true, but they don't represent the actual BELIEFS of Seattlites.

Erica C. Barnett@ericacbarnett.bsky.social

Sara Nelson says she hopes this bill will deter people from tagging in Seattle in the future, and says she hears more complaints about graffiti from constituents across the city than about ANY OTHER ISSUE. "We do make a distinction between art and graffiti," she says.

I'm not a lawyer, but I'm pretty sure there have been several cases that say you can't charge someone for liking a social media post. I'm not fan of Hollingsworth (or, well, 8 of the 9 CMs), but this amendment makes sense.

Erica C. Barnett@ericacbarnett.bsky.social

Joy Hollingsworth offered an amendment that would gut one of city attorney Ann Davison's key stated goals for the bill by eliminating a provision that would allow Davison to prosecute and fine people who "encourage" graffiti by filming people making graffiti or liking graffiti posts online.

I worked dispatch at an HVAC company in semi-rural NC one summer. We would absolutely bump people off the schedule when the elderly or disabled called because their AC was out. It was a standard part of the script to ask if they relied on the AC for their health.

I specifically remember a couple cases where some quiet, old lady would call about a frozen coil (my diagnosis, not theirs) and I'd have to convince them that waiting a couple days was NOT going to be ok.

Nothing more perfectly describes the current political climate in the US than democrats fawning over Gavin Newsom for his comebacks on X/Twitter less than 3 months after he platformed Charlie Kirk and Steve Bannon on his podcast. This is the most fucked up rehabilitation tour I've seen.

If you are too young to remember the Iraq War, you'll hear "no one protested" and "no one knew they were lying." Millions of people knew they were lying and protested. The press not only did not want a record of mass dissent; they did not want a record of mass knowledge of lies.

can’t believe this still needs to be said, but: stop following altNPS. none of them work for the NPS and they exist to do Qanon numbers station crap and sell merch. it’s annoying for a lot of us that are actually NPS. thanks

I know a lot of folks like this account. But this is a wild, and unhelpful, exaggeration--it's a resistance version of sean spicer. It veers into #resistanceporn and trades accuracy for clout, like other "blue maga" grifters on here. Pls consider finding other sources of inspiration/news/motivation

I'm seeing a lot of blue state/red state discourse today. This is a reminder that Sarah is right: we're all purple like a bruise. The large protests in states run by the GOP prove that. They're not red, they're hurting.

Sarah Kendzior@sarahkendzior.bsky.social

As I've said many times, "America is purple -- purple like a bruise." I've got the same number of bestsellers on the list as Trump's former press secretary, in a state that Democrats routinely denigrate and dismiss.

Wilson, an elected official, serves at the will of the voters and there's no way to remove him—a nonbinding resolution is the most the council can do, and they did. This isn't a matter of "due process" in any legal sense at all.

I see they're speed-running the 2020 playbook. Next up is shooting, gassing, and beating legal observers, I think. There were a lot of apologies about foreign press and legal observers in 2020. I'm not really expecting that this time, though. They're not worried about getting away with it this time.

This thread could easily have been pulled out of 2020 Twitter from Portland or Seattle. This shit doesn't change. Police actions are arbitrary, violent, and unconstitutional.

Laura Jedeed@laurajedeed.bsky.social

Hello from downtown LA, where the helicopters are circling and sayimg they got the protesters surrounded. Flash bang echoes. They're pushing protesters back There won't be a lot of pictures today for reasons I assume are obvious Let's do this 🧵

And also a reminder that consent decrees (even under Democratic administrations) make this worse. The DOJ, consent decree monitor, and the judge pushed back on Seattle's attempts to restrict use of less lethal weapons, saying that cops would just use batons and break people's arms and legs.

I mean, these days, the police aren't trained to do that either. They also view everyone else as a potential enemy.

Liza Goitein@lizagoitein.bsky.social

Civil unrest should be handled by civilian law enforcement except in the most extreme situations. Soldiers are trained to fight and destroy an enemy; they aren’t trained to safely handle and deescalate civil unrest situations. 10/19 www.judiciary.senate.gov/imo/media/do...

But it would be a mistake to focus too much on which statutory power is being used here. What matters it that Trump is federalizing the Guard for the purpose of policing Americans’ protest activity. That’s dangerous for both public safety and democracy. 8/19

I went to Seattle's Norwegian parade yesterday because my kid's school was in it. When a Norwegian flag is hanging at an angle, it looks like a different flag. One that makes a bunch of white people cheering in the street look a lot scarier. I did a double take when I saw it.
