Amazing! “This is a huge victory for the Brazilian people who in the second round had the chance to think about what President Lula means for the environment, for the defence of our national health service and our education system and for the Brazilian constitution.”

Wrote the story. The story is out. Shoutout to the fearless residents along the river's edge who reported the problem, went looking through toxic fumes, and who won't shut up until there is real accountability for what happened. www.theguardian.com/environment/...
Shocking. 😳 #Google fell 250,000 trees for a data centre. Around quarter of a million trees occupied the 815 acres of forest in northern Finland. Now they are gone. Google illegally stripped the area – taking even the top soil with it – and all that remains is a vast expanse of mud. #ecocide

Pleased what #WestSussex libraries will continue to loan Sally Rooney’s books. I asked what would happen about the Public Lending Right and if the author still be paid and the librarian said she thought the library would issue a statement at some point. #sallyrooney #booksky @ravenbooks.bsky.social

"This decision will support the country’s energy security with homegrown gas this winter and help minimise the UK’s use of imported higher emission fuels as we continue our transition to renewables and nuclear." The minister is knowingly spouting utter bullshit, this decision is insane
Depressing news 😢 Tessa Khan, the executive director of Uplift, said: “Jackdaw will provide around just 2% of our gas demand for roughly 10 years. It has been oversold and won’t stop the overall decline in North Sea jobs, as it will be largely unmanned and operated remotely.” #climatecrisis

Among Keir Starmer's worst deeds were his legislative and rhetorical attacks on nature protection. In those two wasted years, we spiralled backwards, even from the Tory legacy. At this week's biodiversity summit, the Burnham govt should pledge to turn that round. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
Brilliant! A life-sized statue of Ron DeSantis, the Florida governor, was unveiled and promptly began melting in a symbolic protest at his rejection of action on the climate crisis. The silvery statue melted away to show a skull under DeSantis’s face. #climatecrisis #artivism #protestart #Florida
Governments look almost certain to miss nearly all of the targets – potentially continuing the record of never having met a single UN target on nature since the biodiversity convention was created in 1992. UK is on track to meet just 3 of the 23 targets by the end of the decade. #biodiversityloss

Most interviews about fascism don’t end with me almost crying about the wonders of Pacific wild salmon, but somehow this one did. One of the best conversations I’ve had on tour so far. Thank you Oli Dugmore and The Exchange. @newstatesman1913.bsky.social youtu.be/JdfMaPrMBW4

Sally Rooney has said she is being forced to withdraw her books from sale in the UK because of her support for the banned organisation Palestine Action. The Irish novelist said her public support for the direct action group meant she could no longer receive royalties from UK sales.
The autumn blooms of common ivy, rich in pollen and nectar, are the most visited by insects. The next most popular are hogweed and bramble flowers, followed by non-native buddleia, which attracts four times as many butterflies and moths as other high-scoring flowers. #pollinators #butterflies
Terrible news 😢 Wild bird populations in the UK have fallen to their lowest level since records began, with nearly half of species in decline. Farmland bird populations have decreased by 63% since 1970. The decline is due to changes in farming, increased pesticide use, & the removal of hedgerows.
“People come and walk here and it looks just like mud, at a distance. And then you get closer in and see.” Set up by the environmental charity Thames21, volunteers are recruited to help map out the amount of wipes that are flushed down the toilet and washed up along the river. #plasticpollution
#FindingBritain’sSlaveTraders is brilliant & disturbing. Essential information about the role Britain played in the transatlantic slave trade. Don’t know how David Olusoga manages to present the horrific facts so clearly. (Liverpool Town Hall need to remove some of their paintings from display)

Heat pumps ARE defence. We are fighting a war against fossil-fuel backed petrostates whose Achilles heel is our energy independence. Our weapons are as much heatpumps, EVs, grid upgrades, batteries, solar, wind as munitions. (I made this argument last week, speaking at @friendsofeurope.bsky.social)

Amazing! Dr Frauke Fleischer-Dogley, the CEO of SIF, said: “More than 180,000 giant tortoises roaming freely on our atoll is proof of what long-term commitment to conservation can achieve. This is wonderful news for Seychelles, for the world, and for everyone who has worked to protect Aldabra.”
Report on impact of #PeoplesEmergencyBriefing film. Of 13,000 people surveyed, 87% said watching the film made them more motivated to act. 89% of people said the government should respond to the crisis with emergency-level mobilisation, similar to Covid-19 pandemic or WW2. @nebriefing.bsky.social

What an amazing tree! The wych elm tree, located in Newcastle, County Down, owes its name to its near horizontal trunk, which has grown sideways owing to the strong seaside winds coming off the Irish Sea. #uktreeoftheyear www.theguardian.com/environment/...
