Approving the Jackdaw gas field solves none of our problems, while contributing to the existential crisis of climate breakdown. The government has privileged special interests above the general interest. It's a shameful, cowardly decision.

Oh, stop it George. In the scheme of things this is insignificant. The battle has been lost to climate change. Most of those losing their shit over this have cleansed their conscience by putting the recycling out and blaming ‘them’.

Hmm. Rejoin SM. Net zero by 2045. 90% renewal generation. End raw sewage dumping. Voting at 16. STV system. End right to buy. 150,000 new council houses. Super tax. Equalise capital and income tax. Freeze bus and rail fares. Nat care service. Lots to like.

Yep. Madness. Want clean gas? Try anaerobically digested sewage, waste food & crop residues > biogas, CASH, compost, cleaner rivers & seas, more fish & jobs. Yet no one will talk about it. DK Ger, Ireland already getting gas from these free sources. !!!!!

IF there was a concomitant drive to expand (ideally non-lithium) Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), that could store and distribute renewables-generated power on demand, I would ‘get’ a short term Jackdaw approach. But our energy strategy does seem somewhat asynchronous at best. C-

BESS is growing quite quickly. We had record output of battery power just 3 days ago (3.1 GW). We don't hear the positives as much as we should do. EG gas used for electricity reduced by around 12.5 % in the last 12 months (compared with previous 12 months) despite an increase in electrical demand.

We’ve reached the peak of "legacy software" governance: patching a sinking ship by drilling a hole in the hull to see if the fuel is still there.

None of it stays in the uk, it's not the uk's supply, it's Shells, who are selling it on international markets. the government admitted it today and Shell have been stating this all along, Burnham even said that's why he wouldn't allow it, before he was PM.

The🧵 👇also fact-checks the claim, Jackdaw gas were 4x less climate-damaging than imported LNG. The main point I see in the 🧵: comparing imported LNG to Jackdaw's CO2e intentionally omits today's biggest import source: Norway's pipeline gas, which comes with -ooops– the lowest CO2e of all 3 options.

As I'm typing this I'm listening to misinformation on national radio about how good this decision will be for jobs and tax revenues. The truth is that many times more jobs would be created if the same investment was put into renewables. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

In any case, it's not either-or but both-and. It's not as if, once Jackdaw comes on stream, other countries and FF companies will reduce their production: they'll just keep going and flog it somewhere else, so we get the worst of both worlds.

Yeah… big FF probably already designs marketing campaigns for the time when all gas boilers got decommissioned, to make hydrogen out of Jackdaw gas. Creating new demand early ensures longtime profits for shareholders. Dyk, which college and uni courses teach such psychopathy so we can end them?

It's strange. Over nine million people voted Labour last time, quite a few of whom are deeply concerned about climate change. Yet one corporate lobbyist, Shell, turns out to have more votes than all of us. Doesn't seem quite normal.

Appalling...then to suggest he will remove standing charges for gas in 'UK' households. As with everytime Burnham says UK..he really means England. Most of Scotland does not have a gas supply. On a positive note..will this action then displace data centres on the carbon emission tally?

Personally I don't think this is a binary option we all know gas will remain important for some time irrespective of how much we push for renewables Why cut off your nose to spite your face Yes go green as fast as possible but gas will be needed till we don't need it

Minister: The molecules will find their way into our gas pipes. The molecules: We will soon be free 🎉 🔥⚡🌧️☠️

I think it's as much about keeping Scottish independence off the agenda as anything. Poor excuse. Perhaps it would be different if it was treated as a precious resource that we might need for the future, but it's just going in the same heap as the rest of it, to be used for ridiculous profits.

And exactly what you would expect. We are utterly in thrall to the corporate vultures who are destroying life and so-called civilisation at ever increasing rates. It's as simple as this either they go or we all do. It's that level of existential.

It should reduce our reliance on fracked LNG and marginally improve the security of gas supplies to the UK. Gas will be needed for many years in the future. We have an old housing stock and I think a lot of people have reservations about the ability of heat pumps to work economically for them.

Stopping Jackdaw would do nothing to reduce consumption. Over 70% of UK households use gas heating and even more is used to generate electricity. Jackdaw's pipeline is better than the alternative supply of LNG. It's the consumption stupid. Electrify everything.

There are ways of reducing gas consumption though, like fitting air-to-air heat pumps (much cheaper and less disruptive than air-to-water) to provide part of the heating needed. Vision and creativity are needed.

I live in an old Victorian house, and needed a new boiler last year. Frustratingly I had to replace it with a new gas boiler. The cost for a heat pump and necessary changes to the house were exorbitant.

I too have a combi gas boiler that would be too expensive to replace with an air heat pump. But I am getting an air to air heat pump, more commonly known as an air conditioner but allowing both cooling or heating depending on the time of year. Should work well with my solar panels and battery set up

I now have solar hot water (South Africa). Not on a separate meter but I run the electric backup 3 hours/day. The element uses 50% of the power of a purely electric solution and only draws power if the sun hasn’t taken the temperature high enough. Gains would be less in a cooler climate.

It’s not even like we are going to get any benefits from it. Our energy prices will continue to be dictated by ‘the market’. The energy companies will make a fortune, selling us our own gas.

Regressing on EU environmental safeguards including river protection and chemical restrictions. Dropping the climate and nature bill and u turns on Green funding . Whats there not to like about Labour ( from a former lifetime voter)?

Trail hunting foot dragging after committing to ban it.Manifesto pledges to end trail hunting , trophy hunting , snares and Badger culling All FORGOTTEN

Labour campaigned on strengthening nature protection. In reality they have given us priority of economic infrastructure and weakening biodiversity net gain. A planning bill ‘license to destroy’ Wildlife charities and put over 5,000 ‘protected’ sites at high risk.

I don't know enough to comment on whether it makes any real difference to our energy dependency problem. But it makes somebody rich for sure. And I really wish the PM would decide whether the manifesto commitments meant anything. Seems to be flexible?

The main reason we’re in such a mess is that when it comes to the crunch, our politicians (on all sides) always fold & give in to special interests. Their failure is systemic - politicians are too weak to stand up to the weight of lobbying. Nothing improves until we fix that.

I'm fully on board with moving rapidly to renewables. I would prefer to leave fossil fuels in the ground. I know that climate change is existential & we cannot control it. But some gas is going to be used & its carbon footprint is likely to be lower if it comes here from the North Sea.

Half correct. It will be priced on the international market. In these febrile times it will assist with our energy security if push comes to shove. The tax raised will be used to boost renewables. Hacksaw ans Rosebank are separate issues and I hope will be treated differently.

It will be sold on the international market. Push comes to shove isn’t a serious approach to energy policy. The only energy security to be had is in keeping fossil fuels in the ground. Any tax raised will be spent on the whims of however many Energy ministers we have in the next decade.

Approving Jackdaw prioritizes corporate oil profits over public welfare and climate stability. Social democracy demands ending fossil fuel hand-outs, expanding public ownership of clean energy, and protecting working families through a just, state-backed green transition.

Let’s be honest this has nothing to do with energy security, nothing to do with reducing costs for consumers and nothing to do with jobs it’s all to do with rich oil companies making more money and Labour co-towing to billionaires.

Yeah, the elephant in the room that all these worthy types seem to be willfully missing is, we need gas *now* as things currently stand & if we're to transition away from our reliance on fossil fuels (& Putin), we need a graduated plan to get there & this forms part of that. And they know this...

There is already more than enough fossil fuel being extracted to cover demand while we switch to alternatives. We should be accelerating the switch, not adding to the problem. And there is so much more the government could do, right now.

Without the excuse of oil & gas, how would colonial imperialists continue to play the game, they are so hooked on?

Like build renewables under a publicly owned company that sells direct to the UK consumer rather than allow private providers to build energy infrastructure that destroys the climate and should soon be redundant to export to other regions of the world.

The other side is Norway and its sovereign wealth fund. You can't ignore that on one side you have the UK poor as a church mouse and Norway wealthier than Scrooge Mc Duck. The same body of water , the same gas fields .

We don't have a government. We have a grouping of Neoliberal enablers. An array of compromised departments led by ministers all compromised & none representing their electorate. Except the blind very wealthy minority. So our society is fucked by fuckwits, who spend their days researching PR & BS.

Give the Prince his right to be pragmatic, so he can negotiate fuck all worth having for the people he purports to support. AB is a Neoliberal con, so far, & as far as I can see. A socialist would have blasted Into action, rent control, billionaire taxes & deep ecogical support. The least we need.

It is a deeply cynical betrayal of Socialist considerations, perhaps partly in fear of hidden offshore corporate profit law suits. I turn to our disenfranchised youth, facing both AI & ecological catastrophe. Hopefully the majority join the Green Party & seek more radical restitution of their future

And if you were to demand a reservation policy to keep locall prices lower they will reject that, because at the end of the day they want to make bank and don't care about lowering energy prices, and that sums up the big lie thats sold to justify doing it in the first place.

A comment this morning was that any tax revenue will go towards green solutions. But if tax incentives are being offered this is 🐂💩 as there will likely be no nett gain.

It does solve some of our problems, energy security, reduced carbon from imports and jobs. On the other hand our net zero policy is toast!

Fahnbulleh justifies the approval on the basis that (1) it will provide a degree of gas security for UK and (2) that the tax revenues will go towards the green transition. But it appears that Jackdaw will only contribute c.2% of gas consumed, and she gives no figure for the additional tax.

It solves the problem of giving Russia cash for gas whilst we transition to fossil fuel free. Obviously instantaneous transition would be ideal, but also as obvious: this is impossible due to the lack of infrastructure.

To be picky: it's not extracting hydrocarbons that contributes to global warming, it's burning hydrocarbons as fuel that's the problem. Our effect on CO2 levels is the same whether we burn North Sea oil or Middle East oil.

How much will it cost to mitigate the damage to our environment from the increased emissions . I never hear this as an argument against digging up more fossil fuel

The UN says the World must cut emissions by 18% in four years… What is holding us back are our political leaders; it’s not only a dereliction of duty, but ecocide. It’s only a matter of time before ecocide becomes something far more sinister.

George, there are 23 million households on the country with gas boilers. You're not stupid; you know it will take decades to refit with heat pumps. We are already highly reliant on gas imports. What message does it send other gas producers when we need to ask them for more gas?

The 9th August may have marked the beginning of the end for Britain’s Net Zero ambitions. With war reshaping global energy security, the Government may have little choice but to put climate targets on the back burner. Geopolitics has a habit of rewriting the rules.

The ENTIRE point of mandelsons faction within labour, the people who made sure burnham had a Westminster seat to stand for, and who still run everything, is to privilege special interests. Its how they make money.

I disagree - there is whether you like it or not a transition period from fossil duels to renewable. We also have an energy security issue. Therefore better to use our own fossil fuels, protect jobs and get the tax revenues rather than importing fuel from across the planet.

Scotland’s maybe not Britain‘s Devolution for those whose resources have all been extracted or mothballed , ie the old coal fields , but Scottish independence denied .

Burnham bows to Big Oil. Jackdaw offers negligible benefit (~0.01% of GDP), pathetic energy security & disputed emissions savings. Yet Britain sends the world a clear message: UK FOSSIL FUEL EXPANSION OPEN FOR BUSINESS. A decision that highlights the iron grip of corporate lobbying on UK politics.
