Love TfF!

Forty years ago today: Tears for Fears hits #1 with “Everybody Wants to Rule the World”. “I didn't really think anything of it, to be honest with you,” Roland Orzabal said of the arpeggiated guitar riff that opens the song. “But my wife at the time liked it. So I thought, Okay, maybe I'm wrong.”

GREAT song!! Last year in college.

The great @suzannevega.bsky.social releases “Luka” as a single this weekend in 1987. Upon hearing it, Prince (whom she never met) sent a letter. “‘Luka’ is the most compelling piece of music I’ve heard in a long time,” he wrote. “There are no words 2 tell you all the things I feel when I hear it.”

Do you really want to be driving around in something that screams "I'm an A-hole"???

Wow. All I can say is that I was in college a long time ago.

The Smiths release “Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now” 41 yrs ago today. The song “is like an old school uniform,” Morrissey said. “People insist I wear it, but I'm really not that miserable. I'm not an unhappy person. Not in the least. I'm certainly very surprised and very pleased to still be here."

So cute!

After a handful of minor medical setbacks, (nothing at all serious, just little things that kept them here), Pikachu & Eevee are finally available for adoption again. Extremely friendly and silly! Located in Elkton, MD www.petfinder.com/cat/pikachu-... Don’t miss your chance to catch some shinies!

God, I miss Prince.

Carl Quintanilla@carlquintanilla.bsky.social

Happy b’day “When Doves Cry” — released 41 yrs ago today. On his last night of mixing, Prince started removing instrument tracks, said engineer Peggy McCreary. “The last thing he did was he punched that bass out. He smiled at me and said, ‘Ain’t nobody gonna believe I’d do this.’ And he did.” 🕊️

How many of these has Trump/Doge cut already? Measure the cost in human lives.

The Upshot@upshot.nytimes.com

As Congress Debates Cutting Medicaid, a Major Study Shows It Saves Lives "The expansion of Medicaid has saved more than 27,000 lives since 2010, according to the most definitive study yet on the program’s health effects." www.nytimes.com/2025/05/16/h...

Yeah, but you didn't vote for Kamala, so you really have nothing of value to say on this issue.

Adam Kinzinger@adamkinzinger.substack.com

The next president has to do two things: 1) right the wrongs of Trump and go after those who broke the law and were corrupt. 2). Then spend time divesting power from the presidency and building real guardrails and passing laws like, “the president is not immune” etc. And get the money out

Yet another source of outrage that I try to tamp down: it's a huge scandal that Dems covered up Biden's condition (remember Regan, BTW)... On the other side, there's a president who is in the process of lining his trash bin with the Constitution.

MeidasTouch@meidastouch.com

“This is also a reason why people who care the most about this country continue to abandon these media outlets. It is why CNN’s ratings are in the tank — especially Tapper’s, and why they hunger for truth tellers who aren’t trying to sell books...”

If you saw how Alcaraz played today, you might be wondering now.

The Tennis Letter@thetennisletter.bsky.social

Alcaraz beats Lorenzo Musetti 6-3 7-6 Carlos reaches the Rome final for the first time. A lot of people were wondering what kind of shape he would be in coming back from injury. ✅8th Masters final ✅39th top 10 win ✅14-1 on clay in 2025 No one is wondering now. 🇪🇸

Gross. If the Republicans could ban low income people from having kids, they would. Especially if we're talking about people of color.

Catherine Rampell@crampell.bsky.social

The budget bill is not merely a transfer of wealth from poor to rich. It's also, in many ways, a transfer of wealth from young to old, and from future to past. That's because many of the “pay-fors” in this bill disproportionately hurt babies and children. wapo.st/4dj7bNY

Awesome. The bill can't even make it out of committee.

MeidasTouch@meidastouch.com

BIG BEAUTIFUL BUST Chaos for Trump and GOP—The House Budget Committee blocks the GOP tax and spending bill from advancing in a 16–21 vote. Republicans Clyde, Roy, Brecheen, Norman, and Smucker voted NO. An embarrassing setback for Johnson and Trump from their own party.

I doubt the 74% includes paying off credit cards in full.

Pew Research Center@pewresearch.org

Most Americans (74%) say they can pay all of their bills in a typical month. A quarter say they cannot pay some bills or can only make partial payments, and this differs by demographic groups. www.pewresearch.org/...

Freaking idiots. People die from infections that originate as tooth decay.

Breaking: Florida just banned fluoride in drinking water. Because who needs teeth when you’ve got freedom, gators, and conspiracy theories? 🐊🦷🇺🇸 Also breaking: FL dentists are thrilled. Yacht sales projected to increase. 🛥️🍾 www.nytimes.com/2025/05/15/u...

Can you imagine what would have happened if this were Merrick Garland or Eric Holder?

Norm Eisen@normeisen.bsky.social

AG Pam Bondi sold over $1M in Trump Media stock on April 2 What else happened that day? Trump’s tariff policy went into effect & then the stock price went down Hmm... I’ll discuss tonight w Anderson Cooper @cnn.com at 8:30 pm ET

I'm frankly surprised the percentage isn't higher. Then again, it depends on where the data come from. Very hard to get honest answers about money and sex.

Great job, Brownie!

“I feel a little bit like Bubba from ‘Forrest Gump,’” Richardson said, according to the video. “We’ve got hurricanes, we’ve got fires, we’ve got mudslides, we’ve got flash floods, we’ve got tornadoes, we’ve got droughts, we’ve got heat waves ..” @wsj.com www.wsj.com/politics/pol...

Squeeze releases their “East Side Story” LP today in 1981 — featuring “Tempted”, which Chris Difford said he wrote “in a cab on the way to Heathrow. “.. I just wrote .. how I felt as we wormed our way through the traffic. I also must have anticipated a good time on tour as the chorus suggests." 😏

Just wondering what about Canada and Mexico--our closest trade partners?

Justin Wolfers@justinwolfers.bsky.social

We've now see the Trump White House sit down with the UK and China. Let's dig into what we might learn about the rest of this movie.

Who knows what issues could arise from the appearance of this non-indigenous grass.

Coral City Camera@coralcitycamera.bsky.social

Halophila stipulacea is a species of seagrass native to the Indian Ocean that we first observed here in Biscayne Bay about a year ago. We’ve been seeing fragments more frequently, suggesting it’s becoming well established. We hope it serves as manatee food and sequesters carbon #coralcitycamera

Portraits in chicken-shit.

Catherine Rampell@crampell.bsky.social

Asked if he would vote to suspend habeas corpus, Sen. Barasso said the president will “follow the law.” Asked a third time if he'd suspend habeas corpus, explicitly asking for a yes or no answer; he replied that he didn’t believe the suggestion would make it to Congress thehill.com/homenews/sun...

Yup. We're becoming a shit-hole country.

Will Bunch@willbunch.bsky.social

Growing up in the '70s I'd read about strongman rulers in far-off places like Asia or Africa who had billion-dollar Swiss bank accounts and mansions in the French Riviera while their citizens were mired in poverty, and wondered how that could be allowed to happen Now I know
