These are in my opinion the most important graphs in Brendan's new (phenomenal) paper (that you should read). The United States is a very rich nation. But those riches don't redound to our poorest citizens. We must address that.

Brendan Duke@brendanvduke.bsky.social

The U.S. is the world’s richest large country. We rank high on GDP per person, and typical U.S. HH has the 2nd highest income in world But people w/ low incomes don’t share in that prosperity—their incomes are as low or lower than people in countries less wealthy than us.

it’s amazing how these billionaire tech freaks *love* mainstream sci-fi and superhero movies, and also manage to completely miss the incredibly unsubtle and heavy-handed “we need to protect human creativity and freedom” moral that essentially all those movies are imbued with

Also, the D.C. Cheesecake Factory-to-National Media pipline is real, having produced me, Ashley Parker of the Atlantic and Lynsea Garrison of the NYT. Kids, go wait tables or sling drinks at a bar for a summer or a year. It's a great bit of life experience with transferable skills. Not even kidding.

I am consistently vexed by the fact that elite consensus is more interested in holding US colleges and universities accountable for things that they have a little control over - white color wages, rent in Santa Barbara - than things they can influence - campus safety, instructional approach.

I really wish that folks eotking in higher ed, like the OP from Don’s post would take half a second to understand what cost of attendance means. Would save us all a lot of heartburn.

Don Moynihan@donmoyn.bsky.social

Rising costs is a real problem and the writer here focuses on a factor that the university has limit control over, which is housing. But the practice of quoting sticker prices misses that most get discounts or tuition waivers for lower income. UC says most in-state students pay zero tuition.

The article is rightly more nuanced than this post. The main driver of that headline figure is housing. Yes tuition is a challenge, but it’s not what has pushed cost of attendance over $50k.

Karl Jacoby@karl-jacoby.bsky.social

The soaring costs of public universities is a political decision. When these schools predominantly served white students, they tended to be free (UC, CCNY, etc.) But as the number of students of color has increased, funding for the public universities has decreased. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/25/b...

Do you know how bad the abuse has to be for a judge to remove kids from their birth mother? Just saw Amy Acton’s CNN interview about that Ramaswamy ad and , listen, I lived in NC through the Willie Horton ad era. I’m not precious. This is so disgusting that I wish I believed in hell. I really do.

It’s striking how much of the higher ed organizing on the political Right is focused on the epistemic content of teaching and scholarship - and how there is basically not much of a response to that from either scholarly associations or the political Left.

We still have a long way to go, but this is why the Alliance for higher education was set up. allianceforhighered.org

It’s honestly weird. Surely Mellon, Whiting, and Ford see how much money is being pumped into civic center humanities as teaching and research centers. Do they not have a response? Are they just going to let their decades of investment in higher ed wither away and die?

We're open to the thesis, but the economic data doesn't support it. So rather than trying to find ways the economic data is 'wrong' maybe start looking at non-economic factors?
