it’s amazing how these billionaire tech freaks *love* mainstream sci-fi and superhero movies, and also manage to completely miss the incredibly unsubtle and heavy-handed “we need to protect human creativity and freedom” moral that essentially all those movies are imbued with

I suspect an aspect is that they often don't love the movies, comics, etc. They love the *idea* of them, of appropriating them (like Springsteen or The Odyssey), of putting their brand on them (like Trump renaming the Kennedy Centre).

Same way cops and Klansmen sing along with Killing in the Name and get cross when Rage Against the Machine 'go all political'.

They think they are way smarter than any of the characters in those stories and the authors of them for that matter. So therefore the "lessons" don't apply to them.

they consistently identify with clearly positioned villains, I think it's a bit naive to expect them to comprehend the finer moral points

The Peter Thiel interview with Bari Weiss where he reframes his cohort of billionaires as the plucky rebels from Star Wars. I shot a snot rocket when he said of Musk “we even have our own autistic Wookie” (C3-PO is Right There, Lucas famously said the Rebels were based on the Viet Cong)

These are the guys who watch this stuff and then say things like, "I like sci-fi that isn't political, like Starship Troopers and Battlestar Gallactica," and it makes me die on the inside a little bit every time I hear it.
