I was just elected to the Council of the University Senate for a three year term. My first legislative proposal will be to charge any University of Chicago faculty member a $3000 fee for any peer-review publication that conflates odds ratios with relative risk

We learned today that Paul Rathouz of UT-Austin (previously Chicago and UW-Madison) died on Dec. 10. Few people I've known have enwrapped their brilliance with such modesty, decency, and good humor. A mensch's mensch. RIP.

Still trying to find the best way to teach skepticism in data. When I say check the data, people find the issues, but without that statement there is a “Simon says” reaction. I have many examples of hiding messages (e.g. create a PCA plot it shows “nope” in the plot) but not everyone finds these.

Some of this may be trying to emulate what I recall from David Brillinger’s course in applied statistics. Check the data, then think about theory, but difficult to convene in a 9 week quarter

I really need to finish my ENAR presentation, so this is clearly one of the Kier tempers

But WAIT there's more. Who randomly sampled Helly/Helena's dialogue and estimated the fundamental frequency through a short-term cepstral transform, ran KNN, and predicted who an audio clip from episode 9 came from? you guessed it! And once again, Helena ⭐️ mdr.lucymcgowan.com/analysis-hel...

Please apply, this project involves quite a bit of fun work on combining data from observational studies with randomized trials to estimate heterogeneous treatment effects!
