What would optimizing for societal good look like? @laurenleek.eu @kedseconomist.com

Lauren Leek@laurenleek.eu

I analysed 40 years of British laws and found that society was the footnote. Dirty rivers, absurd train fares, families fighting for support: all share the same flaw: governments optimise the wrong things. Could software engineering offer a fix? laurenleek.substack.com/p/theres-no-...

Good talk. There's a lot of (over)thinking of this at the moment. Zenodo just works. (Until it doesn't when we and our bots ruin that as well.) Collaborate on GitHub and refer to zenodo.

Gave a talk in my dept. on the OSF transition. I wrote up a rough script of the session, which could be of interest to others. I synthesize existing resources and provide my own perspectives. Comments and corrections welcome! zenodo.org/records/2306...

If you missed today's @rinpharma.bsky.social workshop, here are a few of my favourite "quick fixes" for some common #ggplot2 issues 📊 1. Use {ggview} to preview plots at the same size and resolution as you want to save them with ggsave() to avoid the annoying resizing #RStats #DataViz

@costplusdrugs.com - teduglutide (an actual FDA-approved GLP2 peptide) has gone off patent, but the current indication (short bowel syndrome) has a pretty small N. But at $400K per year, some competition on price would help a lot. And a lower price could inspire testing in new GI indications...

I can order single-run high purity custom peptides (for mouse research purposes) from AAPPTEC or ChemPEP in 5 mg amounts for $200-$400, depending on the desired level of purity. So it seems like there is room for savings at scale (big batches for $50/5 mg?) to provide price competition.

OSF getting rid of projects is a right pain. There’s nothing remotely similar as far as I can tell that has: - A DOI for a page - An editable wiki - The ability to uploaded structured files/folders

Look at this graph. The share of national income going to the richest 10 percent was lowest (and share to lower 90 percent highest) when union membership was at its highest. As unions have weakened, inequality has widened. This is why we must build back union power.

MAHA is a con by professional grifters. Great takedown of Craig Spencer getting conned. Real Public Health funds universities and the EPA (a lot!), and does not unleash unregulated peptides on the world. @jeremyfaust.bsky.social

I greatly value this thoughtful, evidence-based line-by-line critique by @jeremyfaust.bsky.social of his friend @craigspencer.bsky.social’s MAHA hagiography MAHA is IMHO a hugely destructive anti-vaxx movement whose leaders are dismantling public health insidemedicine.substack.com/p/i-didnt-lo...

Big selection pressure on humans does not happen that often - we are good at moving and adapting. But the Black Death changed us, increasing the risk of Crohn's disease. More vigorous inflammation in the terminal ileum helped survival then, and boosts CD now. www.nih.gov/news-events/...

Another piece of evidence in support of Epstein-Barr virus infections being responsible for multiple sclerosis. This is huge. And again, it's huge because a vaccine may be able to eliminate or dramatically reduce the incidence of multiple sclerosis.

That is what I want to see. The #USMNT should take PKs VERY seriously. 20% of all knockouts decided byPKs. Even you (yes, you Americans!) can beat teams like England & Germany in PKs (just ask Paraguay). Though an early goal to change the game state vs B&H would be nice. @henrybushnell.bsky.social

The USMNT has used brainwave technology to help prepare players for World Cup penalty shootouts. “Everybody talks about being 'in the zone' ... (staff) can actually track these brainwaves and help you get into that zone." Much more, free to read @theathletic.com, w/ @paultenorio.bsky.social:

I heard from several sources yesterday that NIH is planning to release a Request for Information (RFI) that apparently will include this: Scores and percentiles for NIH grant applications will not be shared with applicants although they will be provided to NIH program officers and staff. 1/3

Since only God could attain perfection there was a medieval monastic scribal practice of deliberately introducing a spelling or grammatical error as an act of humility. I myself always try for four or five errors per syllabus lest there be any doubt as to my humility.

The Illinois & Michigan Canal, opened in 1848, is why Chicago is. Why did it work when most failed? It actually solved a problem! It connected the Great Lakes with the Mississippi River, creating a shipping route from the Atlantic Ocean down through the U.S. It’s been replaced by bigger canals.
