Often because of the efforts to move everything from corporate responsibility to "do it yourself" freedom -- by shifting all the costs onto us

i know it's the age of immediacy and frictionless and what-have-you but *everything* takes longer to complete now than it did even two or three years ago. it's stunning.

Federal funding for science ensures that scientific agendas respond to the wants and needs of scientists and the public. We do not want to live in a society where the scientific agenda is set by a handful of billionaires.

Colette Delawalla, PhD@cdelawalla.bsky.social

It’s time to have a serious conversation about this shift in philanthropic dollars to fund science, in the broader context of the Trump administration’s war on science as a public good. Thank you to @heidiledford.bsky.social for covering this. MY HOT TAKES 🧵 www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Toni Morrison: “The function, the very serious function of racism is distraction. It keeps you from doing your work. It keeps you explaining, over and over again, your reason for being. Somebody says you have no language and you spend twenty years proving that you do…

…Somebody says your head isn’t shaped properly so you have scientists working on the fact that it is. Somebody says you have no art, so you dredge that up. Somebody says you have no kingdoms, so you dredge that up. None of this is necessary. There will always be one more thing.”

Fascinating thread

I spent all day writing the thread in my head about how Bolsonaro's win was the culmination of a 20-year project to end Brazilian democracy, with the participation of both domestic elites and foreign actors like the US state department and Meta. This is all true, of course, except he didn't win.

On the same day, huge crowds are welcoming Machado back to Venezuela. Her return was blocked for months by the US-backed regime. Pressure from below finally made it impossible for Trump and Rodriguez to keep her out

In one day, two politicians - Bolsonaro in Brazil and Vucic in Serbia - with ties to Trump have lost surprise elections thanks to high turnout. The rise of the international far-right is not inevitable.

One of the big findings in my research is that people invested in disbelieving victims are not swayed by evidence. Just like other issues of misinformation, they cherry pick irrelevant details to allow them to continue to believe whatever they want.

You know what pissed me off about the Ramaswamy ad beyond the obvious grotesqueries? There’s no EVIDENCE disputing Acton’s life story. There are court proceedings backing up her story. And all Ramaswamy’s got is the (accused) mother saying “nu uh” and somehow that’s enough? FOR THE REPUBLICAN PARTY

In Venezuela last September, I found people hoping for change, but shocked and surprised by US policy, especially opaque oil deals with former regime cronies. The system looks, one economist told me, like “a coalition of two kleptocracies" www.theatlantic.com/magazine/202...

theatlantic.comAfter the ApocalypseAs Venezuela struggles to recover from political upheaval and calamitous earthquakes, the U.S. government is exploiting the country for oil and money.

“We imagine [our doctor] as an honorary member of the family” ~ John Berger This may be the most succinct statement of what it is like to be a doctor with a patient and their loved ones in a moment of crisis

Reading a 1967 book that mentions, almost in passing, that treating a trans woman with dignity as she lived in the countryside was of course what a decent English doctor would do — which is of course true
