Joerg Lau@joerglau.bsky.social

While it is tempting to blame FM Wadephul or his team that supported Germany‘s bid (I was part of it for the last two years) this would not get to the core of the issue. The job was done professionally. It was the prospect - 🇩🇪 on the Security Council - that did not convince the world out there. 🤔

Ekkehard Brose@eejbro.bsky.social

So Germany will not be on the Security Council 2027/28. The result of today’s vote at the UN was unexpected and, frankly, disappointing. It will be some time before the consequences for our foreign policy in general and regarding the UN in particular will be become clear. No business as usual please

"The war is quite predictably returning to its native harbor." Zelenskyy's words after the Moscow strike are a statement of strategy. Ukraine is now launching more drones into Russia than Russia launches into Ukraine. My assessment of the Moscow attack. mickryan.substack.com/p/returning-...

mickryan.substack.comReturning to its Native Harbour: Ukraine Brings the War to Moscow (Again)Ukraine just conducted a mass drone attack on the Russian capital, employing over 500 drones to penetrate 3 of the 4 air defence rings around Moscow. What does this mean for the war's trajectory?

Indeed, dear Kirsti. The challenge today is to convince everyone that Europe is now very much on its own

There used to be a time when my role on many panels was to convince everyone Russia is a serious threat, but I don't feel I have to do it anymore. — @kristiraik.bsky.social, Director @icds-tallinn.bsky.social #LennartMeriConference

Joerg Lau@joerglau.bsky.social

A stillborn idea

Andrew Gray@andrewramsaygray.bsky.social

Toot toot! The EU’s Kaja Kallas reckons she could handle talks with Russia, although she says Moscow does not seem ready to engage. "When a politician doesn't toot his own horn, the horn usually remains untooted. So I have to say I think I could see through the traps that Russia is presenting."

Quite aside from the Starmer drama, it is remarkable how utterly absent the realities of today's EU are from current UK debates about reset/rejoin etc. Both neo-remainers and neo-leavers are peddling a "back to 2016" button that doesn't exist.

Durchhalten.

Vassili Golod@golod.bsky.social

Sphere of influence fans Putin and Trump face similar problems as power and influence have become diffused and less tractable. Ukraine and Iran did not react to display of traditional instruments of power projection as anticipated. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Europe stands a chance in a multipolar int’l order!

Germany today has become the indispensable nation in Europe. It is obliged to lead. Merz is taking on that challenge in the face of a public sentiment that in part is still reluctant to abandon the post-war reticence. It takes time but attitudes are changing. www.chathamhouse.org/2026/05/germ...

NATO is the cornerstone of European defence. We agree that we must work together on strengthening the Europe’s contribution to NATO. A more European NATO is long overdue. (2/3)

Europe is not just about geography, it's also about the values and principles we share. That’s why we are glad to welcome Canada at the European Political Community meeting today to discuss common issues. We will be talking about connectivity, but also resilience to the threats we are all facing.

Everyone is talking about the “Zeitenwende”. But what does it mean? The book recounts the events that define this momentous turning point. Here is a European perspective of the volatile relationship with Russia, NATO politics, transatlantic relations and the faltering international order (2/3)

The book was published in Germany but is now available internationally via Barnes &Noble, Amazon etc. It is hard to enter the US market from Europe but I trust it will work thanks to people like you. Read, enjoy and talk about it…. THX 🙏

Cancellation of the plan to deploy US Deep Strike capabilities will cause a more serious dent than the actual reduction.

Jeff Rathke@jeffrathke.bsky.social

Looking like withdrawal of 5k troops from GER will involve a US brigade combat team. Whether redeployed to US, or to another overseas location, Congr. appropriation would seem necessary. Joint statement by R chairs of SASC+HASC shows skepticism. My views for FoxNews: www.foxnews.com/politics/tru...

You might want to add: Germany has replaced the US as the major supporter of UKR

Dr. Michael MacKay@michaelmackay.bsky.social

Russian asset Trump has removed all military assistance to Ukraine from the $1.5 trillion U.S. military budget. Ukraine is the only fighting defender of the West against russian armed aggression. Trump gets his orders from the Kremlin and obeys without question. He is a traitor.

Ekkehard Brose reposted

Yes. But we should not rely on it.

Kori Schake 🎃@kschake.bsky.social

Congress legislated a prohibition on withdrawing any troops from Europe or Asia without an extensive study of costs/consequences and an assurance by the Secretary that it’s in U.S. national interests — neither condition has been met. It’d be great if Congress would exercise its authority.

Ekkehard Brose@eejbro.bsky.social
