Interesting to compare attitudes/experiences of the housing market with raw stats. Price of income going to rent is comparatively low in Minneapolis but things still feel shitty. I think we probably focus too much on the price of housing and not enough on the quality and security of housing.

David H. Montgomery@dhmontgomery.com

Median rent as a share of median income of renter households in major U.S. metros, 2010 vs. 2024. Minneapolis is lowest on the list, at 29%, down from 30.4% in 2010. www.artio.so/dataviz/page...

They started texting with a 16-year-old. After two years, they offered to sell him a gun. They consider that "stopping a terrorist attack." And they are calling it heroic. What an absolute embarrassment.

Amy Klobuchar@amyklobuchar.com

I'm grateful for the heroic work of law enforcement that prevented a mass shooting and terrorist attack at the Mall of America. This shows why we continue to need major coordinated investments in anti-terrorism and local law enforcement to stop attacks like these.

It's not fair to say I am taking the city hostage. All they have to do is give me what I want and no one will get hurt. [Kidding — I'm one of three potential swing votes, so not sure why this is the framing. MPRB + City talked more to each other than to me and couldn't agree so here we are.]

BET deadlock on the property tax levy tonight. They will come back at a later date before the end of September deadline to satisfy the demands of hostage taker Eric Harris Bernstein.

A joint letter from @olsenforparks.bsky.social, @brandtmplsp.bsky.social, and myself asking for accountability on MPD overspending ahead of our levy vote this Wednesday. Please read, share, and reach out to your council members if you agree.

EHB on BET@ehbforbet.bsky.social

This morning, myself, BET President Brandt, MPRB President Olsen sent a letter to Mayor Frey, Council President Payne, and CM Chughtai outlining our concerns about unaccountable spending by MPD, and its impact on our city's long-term fiscal outlook. 1/

This is an extremely important point for the Twin Cities and Minnesota in general — unused urban space and suburban sprawl are extremely costly to maintain and add substantially to the property tax burden.

When asked what would make a sweet New Year, the little kid to Zohran’s left says “Moshiach” which means Messiah in Hebrew. He’s pulling for the rapture in 5787 and brother, we are with you.

Shanah Tovah, New York! Wishing all Jewish New Yorkers celebrating a sweet, joyful and meaningful Rosh Hashanah. Here’s to a new year filled with health, happiness and blessings (and yes, even another Knicks championship).

Sorry to my friend Regina but complaining about crowds at the state fair is NIMBY behavior. The crowds are the point.

Regina Burstein@mplsfietser.bike

Maybe a hot take, but it's time for the State Fair to raise the price of admission. I've been here less than an hour and I'm already over it because of how crowded it is. At the VERY least, they should charge out of state guests more. Anyone from Wisconsin has to pay $100.

The cold open to this episode makes it sound like I am growing weed. But the real story is that, yes, I am growing weed.

New episode with Jason Garcia of the Minneapolis Park Board and Eric Harris Bernstein of the Board of Estimate & Taxation. We did the math and realized the mayor vs park board property tax battle amounts to an additional $18 bill for median home in 2027. www.youtube.com/watch?v=nN4V...

Maryland's digital advertising tax was struck down by MD Tax Court. It was a good concept but was deemed illegal because it was too narrowly targeted. This is a common problem with goldilocks revenue raisers that emerge from an inherently anti-tax politics. taxfoundation.org/blog/marylan...

This is an awful idea! I understand we’re facing major county cost pressures due to HR1, but cutting from our popular and heavily utilized library system to save 0.4% on the tax levy is bad strategy. Weakens a popular service and doesn’t nearly plug the hole. www.startribune.com/hennepin-cou...

startribune.comHennepin County libraries to limit hours and staffingRising health costs and uncertain federal funding pushed Hennepin County libraries to propose limiting services.

A note to every Democrat who thinks they should run on tax cuts to signal economic populism: On Tuesday, 83% of Missouri quietly voted down a proposal to end their income tax.

We Make MN@wemakemn.bsky.social

83% of Missouri voters just rejected an amendment to eliminate the state income tax and shift the tax burden to working families. That plan would have cut services and given the richest 1% a $40k/year tax cut. Red state or blue state, everyone wants a fair tax code to fund our society.

The tide of authoritarianism is rising all around us. Americans are increasingly desperate and turning on one another while billionaires at the top profit off of our pain. The least they could do is save us a few bucks at the pump.

As your elected leader I will negotiate with our corporate overlords for bargain discount coupons on your behalf.

Because it is my lot in life (and because I love Brad), I knock about 500 doors in Shakopee every election cycle. His annual sweet corn and BLT fundraiser is a good time, and this year I will be donating another classic from Dave the Pie Guy.

And Bluesky star @ehbinmn.bsky.social will be there. And will be doing a door knocking shift before then cooling off in the splash pad after. Probably. Volunteer -> bradtabke.com/volunteer

My beloved little campaign trailer was lifted off my bike in Standish (in broad daylight!) yesterday. Not a tragedy, but an excuse to post some pictures of the fond memories. She was a key part of the campaign 🫡🫡🫡

In this sense, abundance people who talk about how blue states and cities can’t deliver public services are helping perpetuate the regulatory problems they are so upset about. If you don’t want the public sector to put too many demands on businesses, the public needs to be able to do more itself.

Extremely proud of my friend @aishaforward10.com for taking this step to prioritize her mental health. Aisha has given so much to all of us and deserves our full support as she takes time to heal. I know she will return an even stronger champion for the people of this city. We are with you, Aisha!

Aisha Chughtai@aishaforward10.com

Like millions of Americans, I work to manage my mental health daily. I’ve long ignored my need for more help. That’s why I’m sharing some personal news. I’m taking a leave from the City for a month to get help at a rigorous outpatient program for clinical depression and anxiety.

New York has gotten a taste of principled, effective leadership and they do not want to go back. The rest of the country should take note.

All three progressive candidates backed by New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani — including two who took on Democratic incumbents — won their primaries in safe seats almost guaranteeing their election in November. n.pr/4ahbysP

I am increasingly impatient with the use of space in this city. Too many streets for cars and not people. Narrow sidewalks with no seating. Not a bathroom in sight. And then we wonder why commercial corridors sit quiet. Look what we do with a little breathing room! This should be every day.

EHB on BET@ehbforbet.bsky.social

Close the streets so kids can play in them. This is an official position.

EHB catches a major stray in this episode courtesy of MPRB Commissioner @jasoncomix.bsky.social and I must defend my own honor: In a race for the lowest ranking and least respected office in Minneapolis, I would crush Josh Bassais.

NEW EPISODE: It's that nightmare we've all had about having to take an exam for a class you haven't attended all semester. But then you realize you're also completely naked. And then someone you thought was a friend looks away in disgust and refuses to nominate you for the DFL endorsement.

Best thing about Mamdani is that he's one of the only Democrats who understands you can just do things

Unprompted thought on healthcare reform: The conversation needs to move away from single payer and towards single provider (public health service). Insurance is a fundamentally broken model because it disincentivizes early care, which leads to worse outcomes and higher costs.

Insurance model isn't just awful user experience, it warps the providers we get. Surgeons and specialists to treat people with serious conditions instead of GPs and nurses helping people stay healthy; no rural clinics bc they're not profitable, etc. Health services gives us control over supply
