It is critically important for everyone to understand that the vast majority of those in positions of authority, whether elected, appointed or usurped, see free expression as a privilege available only to those with whom they agree. Thus, anything they say about it *must* be seen in that light.

NSW Police Commissioner says stopping free speech not about stopping free speech.

The government of Ireland will go anything to get the government of Israel not to be angry with it, and Israel still pisses on its efforts. Lads, they'll hate you forever. Stop pandering to them!

Airports are cruel, cramped spaces with far regard only for people's impulsive spending capacities. I have an instinctual mistrust of Ryanair's justifications for making things harder for its own passengers, but even if it's fair, it still results in making the airport experience worse.

Ryanair flights are to close checked bag drops an hour before departure, a change from the current timeframe that allows passengers up to 40 minutes before a flight takes off. The tightened schedule will take effect from Tuesday 10 November. www.thejournal.ie/ryanair-bag-...

Brazil going the way of South Korea. Basically around the world women are desperately trying to keep power out of the hands of incredibly stupid fascistic grifters while men keep trying to hand it over. Men are an embarrassing cringe gender.

The reverse, of course, was when we were driving in the middle of nowhere on the Sligo/Mayo border and were hopelessly lost (pre SatNav). There was a farmer standing at a gate watching us so I hopped out to ask for help. Me: "Hi, can you help? I think we're lost" Him "You are, yes." (walks away)

This guy just told the country that his industry has given up all attempts to win the hearts or minds of those who share morals with Sally Rooney. The data centre industry has therefore ceded the point that it can bring nothing good to Ireland.

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

PSA: we have only 7 weeks to the start of the Grand Auld Sthretch for 2027. The light at the end of the tunnel is small and faint, but it's visible. We're getting there, and it won't be long before we can really start looking forward to it!

When my sister was studying in NY and was at the student canteen she kept asking if they had any butter to go with her roll, but they could not understand her at all. What's "busher"? Eventually she said something like "budda" and they finally figured out what she wanted.

A friend of mine (from Cork) lives in the 'States. She told a funny story about how she was trying to tell someone over the 'phone her number. "I'm sorry, ma'am. What's that third number again?" "aysch" "No. Not getting it. Can you go again, please?" "Aysch!" "I'm sorry, maybe try again?" ...

Laura Maguire@lumagoo.bsky.social

I said the word "tune" in a classroom last week and all the kids asked what that was, so I had to say "toon" for them to understand.

"Aysch! The number between seven and nine!" "Oh! Alright! Aih!" What made it hilarious for me is that each time she said "aysch" when telling the story, I interrupted with "ate", and she'd say "yes" without at all hinting that she noticed I was taking the piss.

My son did quite a few small bits and pieces until he was about 13 years old or so. 1 feature length movie, a few episodes of a major TV series, lots of ads and lots of promo photo shoots. He was paid for all that work. The 2 things he did for RTÉ earned him exactly €0.

While RT is back in the news I just want to vent a grievance. As the Toy Show -one broadcast, one day a year - grew bigger and more cinematic each year under his stewardship, the production of original children’s programming by RTÉ (where RT got his breaks) shrunk down to nothing.

There is, indeed, payment for chaperoning, but not from RTÉ, and generally it kicks in only when your kid has arrived on set or location. *Sometimes*, but mostly not, transport on shoot days is covered by taxis, but again not by RTÉ. And then there's the life-time buyout ...

This is an agreement that any payment is one and done. It's hard for kids and inexperienced parents to fight these things, and they're as abusive AF. Anyway, when we get around to reforming RTÉ, I think it could engender a lot more respect from young talent by treating it with some respect.

I will always defend the need for RTÉ, or at least public service broadcasting, but the attitude that allows them to think spending gobs of cash on spoilt shits like "RT" and then decline to pay kids for their work has always stuck in my craw.

And, this is before we think of the wholly uncompensated expense parents go through facilitating it: - Transport to auditions and "callbacks", to "wardrobe" and to location; - Time off work for the same; - Time or money spent reviewing contracts (yes! kids need to sign contracts for these things)

Y2K was real, but we realized the problem was coming years ahead of time and spent thousands of hours and lots of money to fix it before the deadline. So when it finally came and nothing happened, most people unaware of that, went "it was never a problem" rather than "we fixed it in time"
