Quote of the day from @matt-levine.bsky.social “if you have a small brokerage account and are constantly buying stocks and selling them an hour later, chances are that over the long run you are just transferring money from your account to your broker and a market maker.”
www.ft.com/content/f294... Flávio Bolsonaro’s passport cancelled as reports say he has fled Brazil Ah yes, because every non-corrupt candidate needs to flee the country the minute they realise they are in fact going to be still subject to the rule of law

Britain’s elite may soon become harder to spot economist.com/britain/2026... ‘In the current edition John McDonnell, a former Labour MP, lists his recreations as “fermenting the overthrow of capitalism”—with spelling, evidently, being less of an enthusiasm.’ :)

A morsel of reassurance from me about the recent market moves in @economist.com's leader pages: "Either AI or public debt could crash markets. But probably not both" And of the risks to fear, a sovereign-debt bust is far more worrying than an AI crash. www.economist.com/leaders/2026...

Like, someone should explain to Americans that - no - prices will not go down, prices will go up but by less and by the same amount wages go up, and someone should explain the French that - no - you cannot retire at 60 when life expectancy is 83 and fertility rates are below population replacement.

The fact that Western publics are unreasonably mad at objective trade-offs and tolerable living standards (and have to make up new words to describe a nebulous “crisis”) is bad because it generates real crises (avoiding trade-offs causes debt crises, grievance politics cause democratic crises).
“It’s real, even if it doesn’t show up in charts.” How do you know it’s real, then? How do you know that you’re not simply insisting on a reality you prefer, in the face of evidence? How would you support your view? Is it falsifiable, at all? How are you any different from MAGA in this respect?
