I'm excited to announce that I will be joining University of Alberta this fall as a Killam Postdoctoral Fellow in English and Film Studies to work on my project "A History of Tactile Writing and Reading."

Consent is not about sex. Consent is about your body belonging to you & other people not having a right to touch you when you don't want to be touched. End of story!

What do folks think are the best ways to write TRRPG scenes in a novel? 1. The game character becomes the POV character and we explore their primary world with them 2. The characters narrate playing the game and the action takes places IRL 3. A combination where we move in/out of the game

Stressful day for Albertans—it's referendum day. I voted last week in the advance polls. I'm not sure how long it will take to get confirmed results on 10 referendum questions, but many of us will be on edge until results are announced.

This referendum is a waste of time and resources. Separation is an absolutely ridiculous concept, and I will be horrified if the vote goes that way. The other nine questions are all about Smith clawing for more power and encouraging racism. I'm so disappointed that this referendum is even happening.

Sharing the Good Word of Broadsheets on my office door at Stanford. #DHmakes

Gwen C. Katz@gwenckatz.bsky.social

Fuck ChatGPT flyers. The future is broadsheets.

Firefox just asked me if I am "overwhelmed with too many tabs." I shut my computer off last night, so I only have eight tabs open. Eight! Sir, this is nothing. These are my standing always-open tabs. This isn't even a research window. If eight is overwhelming, then I'm in the wrong profession. 😂

I bought tickets to see Death Cab for Cutie next year. I had to call the venue to ask about accessibility, because it's a standing room only venue and I can't stand for the length of a concert. There is an access platform with ramp + seats, but you can't reserve space there. Just buy GA and hope.

When disabled people say they have to perform extra labour for basic things, this is part of it. Most folks can just buy a ticket in their preferred section. I had to call and I still don't know until I get there if I'll have proper access, bc they don't know how many disabled people buy tickets.

I got my turkey in the oven on time, right on schedule. I was so proud of myself. Until it came time for the first baste, and I suddenly remembered that I broke my baster last year and meant to buy a new one before the holidays this year. 🫠

Q for #BookHistory and #ArtHistory folks. I'm looking for a reading to assign 3rd year undergrads that describes the process of production for early modern engravings. This is not my area of expertise, and I'm having trouble finding something that works. The course is Histories of the Book. Thanks!

Also a huge shout-out to the team at Scholarly Editing, who were absolutely incredible to work with on this project. The edition may name Alan, Brendan, and myself as the editors, but Raff and the Scholarly Editing folks did a lot to support us in getting this edition finalized. So grateful to them.

This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

Having seen the Joyce Carol Oates very bad, not good tweet about romance and AI, I can't help thinking about the way that romance has been treated as a punching bag for so long and always by people who are completely unwilling to engage with the genre and know little about it.

as I said in the panel today, I have been alt-texting for all my posts each time since this project started - and a hope is that that practice will rub off on other comics folks. I think it has not, thus far. But I hope it does over time...

I had a failed print yesterday! It slipped on the print plate and ended up spaghetti printing about halfway through. I love seeing all the different ways these prints can fail! I added more supports and am reprinting it now. This is a German line braille print from le musée Louis Braille.

A sequel to one of my favourite games was recently released. I already bought it, but I decided to check the reviews 3 weeks post-release. Overall very positive, but some negative reviews start with "I didn't like the first game, and I'm disappointed that the sequel isn't better/different." WHY.

Post negative reviews on games in genres you like that don't live up to what they promised. That's fine! I'm not saying people should never post negative reviews. But don't tank reviews on games because you don't like the mechanics they use, especially if it matches what the game promised to be.

Anyway, all this to say, if you like grindy crafting games and weird farm sim type games, check out Graveyard Keeper and its recently released sequel. They're great! If you don't like those kinds of games, then go play a game you do like instead.

I'm a casual gamer. I prefer games with fetch quests and grindy crafting far more than games with a lot of fast-paced action. I see so many negative reviews on these games because they're "too grindy" or "not much action." Okay so these just aren't the games for you? That doesn't mean they're bad?

If you love Dark Souls, don't post a negative review on Stardew Valley because there isn't enough action in it. If you love Resident Evil, don't post a negative review on Wytchwood because it's all fetch quests. You're tanking the reviews on games some people like because of those aspects.

I'm so confused why people would purchase the sequel to a game they didn't like? And they expect it to be wildly different from the first? I'm glad it's so similar to the first—that means I'll likely love it like I love the original.
