Hello bluesky! I am a book historian trained in literature (early&c19 American) who’s worked in a library/info studies dept for 13 years. I wrote a book abt what rag paper makes present & how writers thought abt that from 1650-1900. Im an editor of PBSA, thinking abt what bibliography is in the C21.

Reupping for the new week!

JOB(S): My dept has an open rank open specialties (w/in Information Science / Library & Archival Science & closely related) search out of which we hope to make multiple hires! Im not on the committee but can say we'll have new teaching needs in social impacts of information technology & also ethics!

The only reason I can think of for this news not being absolutely everywhere is that large media orgs don’t want to be seen as putting their thumbs on the scales a week before election day. And that’s cowardly as shit.

Listened to the Brewer game on AM radio last night while driving home home from Chicago. Long live AM radio! “Brewers are making mess for the Rays here in the 6th. When YOU’VE got a mess reach for north shore adult diapers…”

Yes and we’re going to have to (re)build the other vision ourselves, amid opposition from college boards and presidents. There’s Natalia R Alexander’s “Growing People,” my chapter with Aashish Mehta in “Limits of the Nunerical” et al, lots to build on but so much work to do!

Musk’s wealth is a threat to democracy—not just in the U.S. but everywhere. He’s probably the greatest threat to the free world today.

Quite sobering filling out the annual call for names to be remembered at my high school’s annual alumni memorial mass and realizing how many classmates and teachers have already departed this earth.

Maybe universities shouldn‘t be tying which departments and programs they decide to invest in based on projected job trends they have no actual clue about. Why not just invest proportionally in every field of inquiry rather than underfund some disciplines and overfund others?

For #MosaicMonday, this framed Nilotic scene is actually a surviving fragment of the famous Asàrotos òikos (Unswept Floor) from the Aventine. It formed the high-art centrepiece of the dining room, admired by guests looking past the trompe-l'œil food debris at their feet. #AncientBluesky 🏺

BREAKING: Justice Department issues subpoenas in investigation into progressive Rep. Ilhan Omar’s immigration status, including to members of her family.

One of the hallmarks of middle age for me is now when I read some bit of news my first thought is often “oh man I bet [insert name of this or that friend] had to go to soooooo many stupid meetings about this.”

I recorded a half hour lecture for a class. My usual tool for this is to record a meeting on zoom in which I'm the only attendee. When I tried to upload it today I realized: I was on mute the entire time. If you need me I'll be curled up in a ball on the floor for a while.

Is there going to be peer review on this stuff, or can I just do a website and some tweets saying that I solved a bunch of major problems too?

Today in a class exploring the concept of the liberal arts and sciences (vs instrumental learning) I asked freshmen if they didn’t have to worry about money what theyd major in: the common answers: taking care of the earth & animals, learning languages, exploring culture & geography, seeing art.

Of course another version of the question is once AI obsoletes the income available to you and I, what do we want to do with our time and selves?

The follow up question: you’re back on campus for my 100th birthday party. You’re now retired: what are you doing with your time? What are you thinking about? How have you lived your values?

This is horrifying and exactly what a lot of us have been warning against for years. So fucking frustrating. We could have had better—politically, technologically, socially, and economically. We need far better leadership in all fields, at all levels.

The amount of time I spend each day going to removepaywall dot com in order to read something is dispiriting. I understand writing & websites cost $! I dont know how to solve this problem! One reason I’m resistant to the suggestion that “we” (humanists? academics? The Left?) bracket out the political and economic contexts of this or that tech to think about its boundless potential is that that selective forgetting and abstraction from power is just what underwrites this kind of pablum
