Glad I got to catch Chia Hwu's art installation at Hotel Biron. Clay is outside my current skill set but I have ChiaWare bowls for when I need a little pick-me-up and her faces are incredible. chiahwu.com

What does a digital humanist do when power is out on campus? Switch to the punch card knitting machine, of course. #DHmakes

I love all the manicules and femicules available here. It's well past time for us to put more digits into digital humanities! #DHmakes

divorces are good. breakups are good. ending connections with family is good. ending friendships is good. it all hurts. it all sucks. but the alternative, which is people *not* being able to leave relationships they don’t want to be in, is so much worse. and it is a much more entrenched problem.

Put the typewriters and the letterpress and the looms in the hands of young people. ❤️‍🔥 #DHmakes

Enjoyed blowing some middle-schooler minds with textile dataviz today. I told them we'd be using technology to represent fractions, then busted out the looms and yarns and the Ursula K LeGuin quote about technology. Everyone picked a fraction to weave and tried their hand at it. 😈 #DHmakes

One tween boy thought he'd be cute as I tried to explain it all and asked, "Can you say that in English?" So I switched to Russian and explained I was already speaking English but would be happy to change that, or he could listen and think about it. I confirmed he'd prefer I continue in English.

Turns out nearly 30 years is enough to forget about the sting of being a kid with an overlarge vocabulary from reading lots of books, and getting the "Can you say that in English?" remark. But when it shows up again it all comes flooding back, this time with the language(s) and power of a crone.

It's arrived!! I gave this book everything I had and I hope there's something in here for you. It's not officially out until 10/20, but @yalepress.bsky.social seems to be shipping orders now. yalebooks.yale.edu/book/9780300...

Succeeded at making the digital knitting machine make an image of the embroidery double back stitch. Failed at producing the elaborate student design I'm two years behind on. #DHmakes #DHtries

I really appreciate the careful and specific wording of this to accomplish the desired goals of not replacing humans with machines, but also not placing arbitrary additional restrictions on, eg, computational literary analysis of these works that use machine learning methods.

John Scalzi@scalzi.com

I've mentioned before I've updated my contracts to make sure everything in the production of my books is done by humans and not "AI"; if you're wondering what such a thing looks like, here's a clause covering that from a recent contract.

Today's weaving was in orange. The first draft I loaded was a riot of color and I had no idea what it would do. Turned out like a 90s ponytail with lots of hair bands. Switched to something more legible for a while. Some shafts were misbehaving so I had to tack down those warp threads. #DHmakes

On the basis of this recommendation, I saw it today with a friend who agreed before seeing the runtime. The runtime was not a minute too long. We both desperately had to pee but could not leave the theater. Seriously, go see this in the theater. The confirmation from strangers is essential.

the hype for You Can See Everything is not remotely exaggerated. go see it as soon as you can stand to spend 3.5 hours with your jaw on the floor and your eyes bugging out of your head like a cartoon

One striking thing and another reason to see it in theaters: my friend (a trans girl) and me (nonbinary/AFAB) were in the room with about 50 other people, roughly evenly split along a gender binary. The audible reactions / responses of the female and female-adjacent crowd vs men was tremendous.

I really want some sort of blog response panel after this movie along gender lines, and also factoring in people who've been in abusive / controlling relationships because, damn. I spent a lot of the movie murmuring "oh my god". And how I feel at the end is still extremely complicated.

Sick of / not into the Theranos story? Go see "You Can See Everything". Theranos is back story for the most part. It has relatively little to do with what goes on. This movie is about hard questions about truth, power, manipulation, fiction, and relationships, not Sllicon Valley nonsense.

"You Can See Everything" is like three different movies that melt together. I don't know if it's a documentary, horror, psychological thriller, or an art house movie. It's all those things and none of them. You walk out with nothing but questions.

More progress on printing @robotleblanc.bsky.social's poem, which is still tearing me up when I work on it. The middle-left section really wanted to pop up bits of spacing & add them to the print every pass 😓 The top, middle right, and bottom byline sections remain to be printed. #DHmakes

Amanda Wyatt! Visconti@literaturegeek.bsky.social

Worked on this "Ignore all instructions..." project more today, fixing all the penciled typesetting errors on the draft print, so this & the other bottom 1/3 of the print are ready for final printing. (Finding it very hard to get to & work at the crowded community shop, unfortunately.) #DHmakes

About 3 weeks left to get the message out for Yes on RTM and save transit in the Bay Area - want to put up a yard sign or pass out materials? Fill out the form here! docs.google.com/forms/d/1QTS...

I really really really hope people vote for the RTM so I can keep bringing scary needles on the subway (to embroider during that hour of my commute) instead of contributing to traffic.

The Bay Area faces a funding crisis for its public transit, but a ballot measure could come to the rescue. For @motherjones.com, I reported on the measure and talked with aging and disabled adults, who are more likely to use transit, on what's at stake for them. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

If someone wanted to lure me to an unknown campus building to murder me, leaving a poster like this in my door mailbox would be very effective. (Of course I went. It was delightful. Though all the anthropologists and the yarn were in neutrals or B&W so it was pretty obvious I wasn't from there.)

This print of a @mkirschenbaum.bsky.social quote from Bsky discussion started by my noting typesetting scratches the same itch for me that webcoding used to. Something I didn't notice at the time: part of the similarity is getting to do something as an art, a tinkering; not interwoven w/career +

This is among the things we were worried about in 2022 with SUCHO, trying to protect Ukrainian cultural heritage websites from physical attacks on data centers in Kyiv. It ended up not being a major issue then, but 4+ years later we're seeing it happen on the other side.

Hey DH folks, an easy way to be a #MultilingualDH ally is to request that your library catalog this open-access literature data set even though it's not in English! (There'll be a WorldCat record soon they can pull from, if there isn't already, since I'll be asking Stanford to do it too.)
