There's a constant low-level discussion on English-language bluesky about the electoral consequences of transphobic rhetoric from left-liberals but I think it's honestly worse than "they might not vote for you", it's more like, you're cutting yourself off from political labor and talent.

In the last few weeks i've been bombarded with emails from people who have minor tech support problems. ChatGPT is telling them to email me, writing their emails, and compiling "evidence packets" after convincing them they have stumbled on a major story: www.404media.co/chatgpt-keep...

This 2014 video by Aditya Mitra shows a fruit bat in India doing the breaststroke (batstroke?) across a river, pumping large pectoral muscles to convert flying motion into swimming. Bats sometimes enter the water accidentally as a result of a collision ... (📷: Aditya Mitra)

…The Wikipedia article about the movie has a range of quotes from reviews. Two of those quotes especially struck me, in the context of nationalism: 5/7

It’s a good reminder to me that there can be layers of cultural context that I might be entirely oblivious to when I’m watching or reading something. For example, Sumana mentions that the movie has Hindu-nationalist subtext, some of which might be completely obvious to a viewer who has… 2/7

World Fantasy Convention is this weekend, in Oakland, maybe a 45-minute drive from my house. But I’m not attending. (This post is because a few people have asked whether I’ll be there.) 1/6

(Their code of conduct says “WFC2026 aims to create a safe, inclusive space for all to enjoy and participate in,” but I feel like that statement may not mean everything that I would like it to mean.) 5/6

Anyway, I’ve never been a huge WFC fan. I’ve attended and enjoyed it a few times, but it’s not one of my favorite cons. In the Before Times, I would have attended an Oakland WFC, and I probably would’ve had a fine time there; but attending WFC has never been a high priority for me. 6/6

(The policies that I’ve seen for most cons say things like “Masks are strongly recommended.” We have 6+ years of experience with phrases like that, and in my experience almost everyone interprets such phrases to mean “No need to wear a mask.”) 3/6

(And then there are cons that don’t have a policy at all. I haven’t looked very hard (so I may well be missing something), but I haven’t found a policy on this year’s WFC site.) 4/6

There are a dozen or so non-local people who it would’ve been nice to see there, and at least that many locals. But I’m not attending conventions that don’t have a strong COVID policy, and I only know of about two conventions that do have strong COVID policies. 2/6

Why is this student so upset about the mushroom, though? What could it have done to make her protest across the whole continent

Re the PHP security issue: My impression is that the patches will be released a few hours from now, yes? (Morning of Oct. 21.) At which point everyone who uses PHP (including self-hosted WordPress sites) needs to update to using the new patched version of PHP, ASAP?

Or if you prefer, create a temporary static HTML page, and change .htaccess to say this: RewriteEngine on RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !=/static-temp-page.html RewriteRule ^(.*)$ www.example.com/static-temp-... [R=302,L] (Replace “example.com” with your domain name.) (Pls correct me if wrong!)

Argh, Bsky truncated the URL, sigh. That RewriteRule line is supposed to say static-temp-page.html, and the URL should start with https://

I *think* that anyone who needs more time and doesn’t mind their site being temporarily down can do the following (but correct me if this won’t help!): 1. Back up your top-level .htaccess file. 2. Replace the contents of that file with this: Deny from all

Reminder to self: If you want to post a non-joking comment on someone else’s post (a post that doesn’t have anything to do with you), but you realize that your comment would start out “I don’t know anything about this, but…”—that’s a strong indication that you shouldn’t post that comment.

Gavin and Kelly have bought the building that their bookstore Book Moon is in! They’re now running a crowdfunding campaign, asking the community to “help […] with increasing our loan payments so that the store can breathe a little easier.”

Launched the @bookmoon.bsky.social Indiegogo campaign (began it last December, launched today, everything I do is a little slow these days!) today but missed the actual moment as I was in teen's zoom school class . . . 😂

Campaign rewards include T-shirts, zombie stories, gift certificates, Tuckerizations, and stickers. And “A Book Moon of One’s Own”—having the store entirely to yourself for an hour.

Oh, and I forgot to mention one of the add-ons: for only $2.99 added to your pledge, you can purchase Gavin and Kelly’s promise to *not* start a podcast.

Some day I may provide some kind of browse-by-topic feature, or a pick-a-random-quote feature, or other approach. But for now, it continues to be just a long page of quotes, in alphabetical order by author’s *full* name (thus usually by their given name). 2/3
