I think there's only one remotely competitive judicial election happening in Brooklyn this time, and it's for NY Supreme Court's 2nd Judicial District. Just don't vote for William Spain Jr. (Conservative Party).

Okay so last night someone boosted a hide and seek comic where one of the first panels was something like "we broke the one rule" and now I can't find it in spite of a ton of scrolling and searching Anyone know what I'm talking about and if so can you give me the link?

How to deal with papermail A foolproof procedure By Jed Step 1. Sort all the mail, making a stack of the most important/urgent pieces. Step 2. —SQUIRREL!

@singlecrow.bsky.social this made me think of you and want to know your opinion

What the the Schismatic Avignon Papacy Teaches Us About the Brooklyn Democrats in 2026

Email, I'd argue, has similarly shifted norms in ways that individualize work that used to be shared (i.e., most professors no longer have their own secretaries to handle correspondence) and that create more of it (since the expectation is that we can respond immediately and field more requests).

I have moved a table slightly and my cats have decided - as they do whenever any piece of furniture moves, however much, that this is now a completely new piece of furniture with no rules associated with it.

So yes: sometimes we would get an Airbnb because at an Airbnb we could find a place that had (a) a big bed for the grownups and (b) TWO SEPARATE beds for the kids. In the UK they have these! They call them Family Rooms! But I have never once found them at a US hotel.

my husband does admissions interviewing for the Recurse Center & I love overhearing (his side of the convo only, obv). I also like when someone asks if he still hangs with batchmates & he says yes but carefully omits that he's also married to one of them. Like "yeah I see some folks... Often..." 👁️👁️

If anyone has screenshots of maintenance/service down banners from websites caused by the php2shell CVE, let me know! I'm trying to make a little compilation of them

If your Wordpress is hosted by a hosting provider, they’re likely going to deal with this for you. If you are the one hosting it, you are the one who needs to deal with it

BTW, my Mastodon world (which has lots of open source maintainers and contributors) is both very useful and very funny today I'm there as social.coop/@brainwane

shitposts aside, this one is serious, my loves: if you’re just waking up and you have any service online running PHP 5.4 to latest, you need to take it down RIGHT NOW and don’t put it back online until after it’s patched absolutely catastrophic vulnerability dropped in the middle of the night

if you or your hosting provider are running a version of PHP that came out after 2012, you are vulnerable to this attack. if you or your hosting provider are running a version that came out before that, you are vulnerable to every other one

A friend of mine is in urgent need of a family lawyer in Massachusetts. He *had* a lawyer, had paid the retainer, etc., and his lawyer then suddenly died (!) and he will need to meet with his ex and his ex's lawyer on November 3rd.

Has anyone given any thought to hand-written journaling practices for people with atrocious handwriting? Both in terms of getting back into it, and in terms of scanning it for later use.

MSPsky, someone in Minneapolis has found what appears to be a stolen Mac laptop and would like to return it to the owner.

This makes me wonder: Has anyone ever designed a video game that explicitly says “you’re gonna need a notebook”? Like some synthesis of the strengths of computer games and single player journaling RPGs?

@marklevinenyc.bsky.social What's your opinion on Ballot Proposal #2? @lwvnyc.bsky.social: "By eliminating criteria requirements ... information may be removed that could have highlighted incompetency, corruption or poor past performance. Could result in less public data regarding a subcontractor."

There are a lot of opinions about what makes you a real writer, so let me tell you the truth: You become a real writer when you notice a typo and it's too late to do anything about it.

in a world where it can get spammed with hard-to-detect synthetic voice calls maliciously trying to abuse it, why would you operate a customer service phone line.

it took decades but we evolved a sort of silent agreement to deal with most of these problems. give credit where it's due, compensate artists, etc. it doesn't work well, but the values we developed over decades are all quietly there and AI companies are flouting all of it. they simply do not care

When my colleague @maxrn.bsky.social discovered fmr NYC Mayor Eric Adams had been hired to convince Wisconsin residents to allow a 150MW data center to be built at the site of an old paper mill, we had MANY questions. So Max headed to Wisconsin Rapids to answer them. His delightful dispatch here:
