Absolutely, the armed dad who stopped the school shooter in Bend acted heroically. So did the police who responded quickly. But this also needs to be said: "good guys with guns" and "active shooter drills" are reactive. We need much more active shooter PREVENTION www.motherjones.com/criminal-jus...

motherjones.comHere's how we can prevent the next school massacreInside a growing method that experts are using to thwart disasters like the recent Oxford High rampage.

No doubt, guns play a role in shootings. But, as a gun owner, I would never, under almost any circumstance, consider using that tool to take human life. If we REALLY want to end gun violence, we should talk about psycho-social factors that led that person to commit violence, irrespective of the gun.

Commodified fantasy takes no risks: it invents nothing, but imitates and trivializes. It proceeds by depriving the old stories of their intellectual and ethical complexity, turning their truth-telling to sentimental platitude.

Just got back from a metal show. Was hungry so I ate a bag of cheese. Felt guilty so I ate a bag of salad. Now I’m cuddled up with a bag of shame.

We just got a memo from the federal government (our funder) that we are no longer allowed to use any of the following words/acronyms in any published work or talks: MSM (must use “Men that have sex with men”) Harm reduction U=U Undetectable = Untransmittable

A crave-worthy delicacy: the bean burrito. Small white @ranchogordo.bsky.social beans, studded with foraged lobster mushrooms and Flying Coyote Farms kale, topped with cilantro and a drizzle of “Everyday sauce: Umami” by Seed Ranch Co on a toasted wheat tortilla. Topped with chanterelles!

Boop.

Amid a media firestorm around since-deleted tweets that were critical of police, Portland City Councilor Mitch Green has seen a fundraising boom. The spike in donations combined with community responses supporting Green may signify a continuing rift between PPB and Portlanders.

It’s a “smash-and-grab job” for the party that put Trump into power.

DOGE was substantively horrible, but only a small part of the story. It's also the only part of the story most Republicans would want to keep, because they supported the objective and the methods, and were willing to take the hit. www.offmessage.net/p/donald-tru...

For the love of all that is good in the world, can we please have the option to remove that “jump to top” button on the left side of the @bsky.app interface? You are blatantly discriminating against left handers!

VPN bans are a direct response to age-verification. Legislators are frustrated that people are getting around their surveillance, but rather than rethink their strategy, they're doubling down and banning VPNs. Fight the Flock-ing of the internet.

Fight for the Future@fightforthefuture.org

The connection between online ID check policies and restricting VPN use is an unholy marriage. Rather than admit that censorship and social media bans doesn't keep us safe, lawmakers have put VPNs on the chopping block. Explore the toolkit to find ways you can help stop this: DefendVPNs.com

Tommy Houston got up at 4:30 a.m. to photograph Portland and Mount Hood beneath a fiery fall sunrise from Pittock Mansion on Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2026. “This morning’s sunrise was bangin’,” he said. Photos courtesy of Tommy Houston

If the current administration can break all the rules and mandate his agenda at any cost, why can’t we have a progressive response just do the same thing, but with the sole and single goal to enact SINGLE PAYER HEALTHCARE FOR ALL and a REPEAL of CITIZENS UNITED? do that, and you have my vote…

My body has completely deteriorated into a blob of nothingness because I haven’t gone to the gym all summer. I’m just planning for my molecules to de-cohease and I’ll just slide back into the ocean and live my remaining days as phytoplankton.

My 9/11 memory? I was asleep after a 5 day meth bender, when my then bf came over after work crying and really distraught. When I woke up, all I could think about was eating and doing more meth. Didn’t even realize what had happened, truly, for maybe a year or two later? 😕

Our society's unfathomable cruelty to homeless people is not just morally unjustifiable, but more expensive than housing people would be. Cruelty against the homeless is an unaffordable luxury. Abandoning homeless people to avoid offending the Protestant work ethic is an unaffordable luxury.

ProPublica@propublica.org

ProPublica spoke to dozens of people who had lived in homeless encampments when cities cleared them out in “sweeps.” We distributed notecards so people could tell us about the toll in their own words. ➡️ This is what they wrote:

If you’ve read any of the Dungeon Crawler Carl books, I have to ask: What’s the voice in your head for Donut? Every time I read her message in the chat, I just hear a voice like Stewie from Family Guy.

Never been to grocery outlet before but I’m hosting a big bbq this weekend, and shit’s expensive! I was surprised how much cheaper stuff is than I’m used to… and damn, was not expecting it to be so cruisey !!

I work with an elderly guy who showed me cards he received from Dolly as recently as last year because he made her a sandwich late one night 40 years ago when he was working the front desk at a hotel in Oregon. For his 60th birthday, she sent him a gift basket. She’s an icon.

Every hour there's a story of like a Norwegian death metal guy saying hey I never met Dolly Parton but she sent me a handwritten note saying she loved our song Corpse in the Copse and to keep speaking our truth

my wife has a friend who sent Dolly Parton a painting she made & a letter explaining how much Dolly's music meant to her while she was transitioning. Dolly responded to it personally & paid for her top surgery. Sounds like an urban legend but it's real. I think we're going to more stories like this.

"The New Jersey Department of Corrections inmate handbook claims the department is dedicated to promoting bonds with loved ones. But enforcing a policy that forbids me from comforting my son while tears stream down his face contradicts that claim."

I’m okay with AI being used to auto-suggest ALT text for media, because despite thinking image descriptions are important for accessibility, I’ve found I’m just too lazy to type them myself. If a prompt was provided that suggested something to start with, then I definitely would do them.
