It’s not over til it’s over, but as they are the only team so far to get a win off the Brewers in the playoffs, we must conclude the Padres are baseball’s second best team.

I am just learning this right now

A new survey of 1,000 American adults found that the strongest supporters of transgender sports bans are not the people who admire women most: they are the people who hold the most hostile views about women. www.helenwebberley.com/news/transge...

Child, in the Spirit Halloween: Mama, I see something really scary. *she leads me past child sized Chucky, Jason, and Freddy costumes, stopping at one for Mike Wazowski from Monsters Inc.* Oh no, it’s Mike. *whimper*

In, like, 2014, I was the subject of an extremely mild Twitter pile-on, and I groused privately to my wife about how people were going TOO FAR. She (wisely) talked me out of writing anything about it. I transitioned instead, and now I am not sure how much longer I will make rent. Anyway!

How are you still writing this shit www.theatlantic.com/newsletters/...

Watching this thing suggests all over again that AI-generated art's central failing continues to be that the kinds of people who might use AI tools to make something interesting are the kinds of people who hate the supposed shortcut of using AI tools because they enjoy the work of making art.

It's funny how the Defenders of Western Civilization really want Odysseus to be this heroic patriarchal figure when he is canonically kind of a dirtbag.

I don't know why I would spend a half-hour carefully crafting a prompt to get some approximation of nuanced performance out of a computer when I could just tell some random guy I found on Backstage dot com "Do it a little angrier" and get the same result in a couple minutes.

Maybe I, a known creative type, am whistling past the graveyard here. Maybe the kids of my daughter's generation, who are going to grow up with tools like this, will figure out how to use them to make cool stuff. Maybe we're all doomed. But the better the tech gets, the less impressed I am by it.

Like there are shots in this where I can see what they're going for. It's probably the best AI-generated thing I've yet seen! It's also still dogshit because all of its faults would be most easily corrected by working with even a group of, like, mid-talent actors who can take direction.

This week on @podcastlikeits The 2000s @emilystjams.bsky.social and I continue our GDT 2000s miniseries by talking Pan’s Labyrinth with @saraiya.bsky.social! We discuss GDT’s love of fairy tales, the phenomenal creature effects and how Emily’s husband aka The Pale Man is just misunderstood.

We had to do multiple IVF rounds to have our kid and almost gave up several times. I think we would have been fine without her, but my god, there is something beautiful about the ephemerality of KNOWING every moment is one you don’t get back because she will be a different person in an hour.

Zach Weinersmith@zachweinersmith.bsky.social

I am 100% in favor of people who don't want kids not having kids, but watching your kids play on the beach on a day where all your responsibilities are asleep is a peak human experience of a type you will struggle to get elsewhere.

"It was originally to be a standalone novel"? "The Dark Is Rising is the _true_ start of the story"? "Cooper retrofitted it into the first book in the series once she realized the two books could share a continuity"? Tell that to 10-year-old me who NEARLY BAILED ON THE SERIES.

We are right on the cusp of AI utopia*. *-agentic AI makes the internet both unsafe and unusable, so I am forced to go outside and write everything longhand by candlelight

First look at Dwayne Johnson as the Chicken Man in Benny Safdie's ‘LIZARD MUSIC’. The film follows a young boy who finds a secret late-night broadcast of lizards playing otherworldly music that opens a hidden door to the whimsical Chicken Man.

To any Hulu executives reading these skeets: I don't know what a "transom" is. It's just an old-timey word I've read in boo-- I've seen in TikToks sometimes, and I think it's funny to sound like I am older than my actual age, which is 27.

Should I email my reps and tell them that while Glee surely won't have a room and if it does, it will likely be full of youths, hiring me to write for the show will be a PR win for maybe eight people?

The YouTube algorithm hasn't yet radicalized me into reactionary right-wing nonsense, but it HAS gotten me watching some good lawn mowing content, which is its own form of radicalization.

At one of my earliest jobs, the editor-in-chief asked me to do an article with a lawyer who specializes in getting people out of speeding tickets about how speeding tickets are bullshit, and anyway, the eic had just gotten a big speeding ticket.

Michael Hobbes@michaelhobbes.bsky.social

As far as I can tell, literally every article on this quotes the same "expert" — a former estranged father who has an entire blog dedicated to absolving parents of any responsibility. He also sells $995 "consultations" where he will blame your kids for cutting you off.

Per a database of discrimination complaints obtained by @propublica.org , Trump's Department of Education is actively ignoring reports of rape and assault on campuses so they can instead focus on transgender athletes. Their obsession with trans people is actively putting women and girls in danger.

Honestly, most John Boorman movies. Highly flawed, visually spectacular, always idiosyncratic. Exorcist II does SO many of the things I say I want in horror. I SHOULD love it, but then I actually WATCH it...
