After a reader reached out with questions about BC’s primary care provider waitlist, I went looking for data that would shed some light on the system, since the gov doesn’t voluntarily provide much info.
I found data in an FOI response showing some residents are on the waitlist for 5+ years.

One more BC thread. The NDP are going to spend a lot of time figuring out what went wrong. I think Eby never found his stride as premier, and the path to leadership was where things started to go wrong. Eby wasn't used to being the bad guy, but the disqualification of Appadurai did not go over well.
It is so frustrating to hear Senators (intentionally) misunderstand the impact to the economy of preserving the right to strike. Labour's position is that when employers believe the government will step in - they don't negotiate, *creating* more disruptive labour disputes.

I, in turn, expressed how ridiculous and stupid that is.

Experts I spoke to also said some of the BC NDP’s policies, like recruiting doctors from the US and introducing a new compensation system for doctors, are helping, but we need more investments in team-based care.
I reached out to the BC NDP, the Green Party and the BC Conservatives for this story. Only the Greens sent a detailed response that directly addressed questions about this data and the province’s primary care waitlist.

The data only accounts for July 2023 to July 2025. Before the election was called, I asked the Ministry of Health for updated data — August 2025 to July 2026 — but they denied my request and told me to file an FOI for it.
That lack of transparency is something that a researcher I spoke to for this story, Sabrina Wong, would like to see change. She said not enough time and funding is devoted to figuring out what innovations are successfully connecting patients with primary care + spreading those across the province.

The FOI response also included data on the number of people on the waitlist, called the Health Connect Registry, across the province. After climbing pretty steadily between July 2023 and February 2025, waitlist numbers plateaued around 385,000.

I'm betting that a lot of people who respond to polls saying they feel more unsafe in Toronto now are conflating the feeling of "I am physically unsafe and under threat in my environment" with "there was a homeless man on the sidewalk on my way to the Eaton Centre and I don't want to see that."
