Time to share my eclectic background. I spent five years as the deputy J4/5/7 at USTRANSCOM. I speak strategic air and sealift air refueling. My portfolio included deliberate planning to include transportation feasibility, emergency preparedness programs (CRAF, VISA, TSP), global posture….

I love my family. The kids determined this weekend was the only one any of them could visit before Christmas. My wife’s cousin chipping in. So breaking all rules, the trees have gone up and some of the mantle decorations now that I can’t physically handle a 12’ tree. Traditions passed. ✅

Yesterday was one of those experiences that will become more common as my cancer advances to the end. It has now disrupted the balance between fluid production and absorption in my abdomen. Had 5 liters of fluid (10+ pounds) of fluid drained. Prior I looked like I’d swallowed a beach ball.

Only good part was getting reacquainted with my favorite doctor all time, the interventional radiologist who has been with me from the beginning. Never fails to make me feel like I’m his only patient of the day.

Another cancer treatment day….and one that sees us initiate my last line of defense that’s currently approved for my cancer. In not particularly sanguine, 2 of the three drugs in the cocktail I’ve had before. At this point, however, it’s about failing slow versus failing fast.

The latest leg of the “Making Memories with the Wife“ cancer tour last night brought a lesson. Playing a random playlist on my headphones. Let me tell you, REM’s “Everybody Hurts” hits really different as you’re nearing the end of treatment options. Almost completely lost my shit in public.

Driving through part of my congressional district that has a fair share of MAGA voters, and the Trump shrines are gone, including one that was really over the top. Flagpoles still up, but nothing flying on them.

So the CT results today were depressing (cancer progressing) but the oncologist wants some more data points, so I did get treated. But things that made me smile: 1. Front desk receptionist flashed a huge smile and a wave when I came in.

2. In the lab, a nurse behind a curtain overheard me give my name and exclaimed to my nurse, ”You have ‘My Name’?” and then popped over to say hello. 3. In the infusion pod, a couple nurses (who were not treating me) came over to say hello and see how I was doing. It’s the little things.

I was double checking my oncology lab/doctor/infusion visit times last night when a new warning popped up. “If you have symptoms associated with measles or suspect you may have been exposed to measles….” Unbelievable the damage anti-vaxxers have already wrought.

This looks like The Amazing Race. I’m guessing they’re all going to stack up at whatever offload facilities they are headed for. Could get same or better throughput with fewer trucks

With the Strait of Hormuz closed, Iraq has resorted to moving its oil across the desert to Syria in hundreds of tanker trucks, in true Mad Max style. From there, it will be shipped to worldwide markets.

Paying expensive healthcare premiums but never using the insurance is a odd way to commit fraud.

Assistant AG for Fraud Colin McDonald: "Apparently 35% of people have never even used their Obamacare account for any health services. That is a statistical impossibility and it's because these are not real people seeking real care. These are fraudsters."

Time for another cancer thread. Earlier, I’d posted that I’d had some disappointing/bad news and I realized it might be helpful to talk about chemotherapy a bit and in doing so contextualize my remarks as I was pretty emotional that day.

Instead of a sharp decrease in the cancer load in my bloodstream that I’ve seen when I’ve responded to a treatment, this initial look at my new treatment was basically flat. I’ll get my CT results Monday to confirm, but at best, I’m having a muted response.

When this fails, I’ve been told that for the moment, I’m out of options and then the endgame will, based on my research, take 30-90 days. So yeah, I was bummed. Especially since this treatment has zapped me. I really want to see a blue tsunami in November. Questions?

Generally, you will see progression free time and/or overall survival time data from the clinical trial. PFT is like it sounds, how long the treatment prevents the cancer from growing (and you may even see shrinkage of tumors early in the treatment). OST is usually the median survival time

Compared to the control. You will see both referenced in TV ads. So, back to me. Earlier this week I got results back from my bloodwork (a Signatera test, controversial in its own right, but highly accurate for me over the past 33 months). They were disappointing at best.

I’m going to introduce some terms that you may run across if God forbid you have to learn about a treatment. Overall Response Rate - you may not realize this, but not everyone responds to a particular treatment. In fact, for my third line defense, only 30% of patients got “some” benefit.

That 30% # is from the clinical trial. For potentially curative treatments, response can be divided into total/complete (all the cancer is killed) or partial (cancer is slowed/halted for a while. Particularly in marketing materials you have to look carefully how partial response is characterized

Hmmm, guess I was kind of wrong on this one? Still don’t understand the nature of the “diversion.” None of the articles I’ve read explain it. Bluesky, however, seems routinely shocked to learn a basic truth. 85-90% of the U.S. military’s daily volume moves via commercial carriers.

hahahahaha INCREDIBLE *CHINA IS HOLDING SENSITIVE F-35 PARTS DIVERTED TO HONG KONG *PENTAGON SAYS IT'S WORKING TO RETRIEVE STEALTHY JET PARTS *UPS FLIGHT WTH PARTS WAS HEADED TO US BEFORE BEING DIVERTED

For seaborne cargo that is because of a federal law mandated “commercial first” policy. On the air side it has to do with the economics of keeping the Civil Reserve Aircraft Fleet fully subscribed. The military also benefits from access to civilian networks far more comprehensive than their own.

Back to the original point, almost all mission critical parts move via commercial means under the small package (<300 lb) express contract. Those flights are restricted from landing in Hong Kong, PRC, Iran, NK, etc. They almost always fly direct from US to allied nation our forces are stationed.

My best friend is from Iowa and has family plugged into the state government. For months he’s been telling me there’s a crisis for the GOP brewing and that Iowa is very much in play.

NEW: Something is afoot in Iowa Democrats see a political “field of dreams” forming Lots of new reporting here ====> youtu.be/7tIY7A7aqwk?...

I haven’t had great news on the cancer front lately and making it to the mid-terms is back as a survival goal. (Previously I’d become pretty confident, now, not so much). If Dems can manage to not screw this up a 1974 result would be an incredible last election for me.….and the nation.

The Downballot@the-downballot.com

In primaries this year, Democratic turnout utterly dwarfed Republican turnout. But does it mean anything for November? It turns out the answer is very much yes. A new analysis from @donnermaps.bsky.social suggests that Dems are on track for a 13-point blowout in the House vote. Here's why.

Between the killing of DTIC and now CASI, DOD really trying to kill any and all scholarship on war, I’m sure that’ll work out smartly!

It is extremely unfortunate and regrettable that the Department of the Air Force has decided to shutter the China Aerospace Studies Institute (CASI). CASI, along with its sister institutions the China Maritime Studies Institute (CMSI), China Landpower Studies Center (CLSC), and…

Here in Missouri House #2, Ann Wagner’s (R) ads are nothing but pure anti-trans diatribe/conspiracy theories. No other issues are being mentioned. Disgusting. Also, completely different than her previous campaigns. I really do despise her.
