Another 67 new Ebola cases confirmed in the DRC in the past 24 hours. More than 9400 cases now and more than 4500 deaths.
At this rate, the outbreak will pass 10,000 cases this month. 🧪 #IDskyinsp.cd/sitrep-n155-...

The available evidence around the death of an anti-plague laboratory worker in Siberia “does not point to a global plague emergency,” Gigi Kwik Gronvall writes. “But this tragic death should prompt Americans to question whether we have the capacity to recognize and contain the next disease threat.”
🥊 Season 2 of #ScienceCounterpunch is here!
We open with biosecurity expert Dr. Gigi Kwik Gronvall, who just testified before Congress on the abysmal state of US biopreparedness.

Update of the Ebola virus disease outbreak in DRC - 18 Sep:
On 17 Sep, DRC reported a total of 7 475 cases and 3 605 deaths (71 new cases & 32 deaths since the last update).
905 patients remain in isolation.
EU/EEA risk assessment remains VERY LOW.

As the Ebola outbreak unfolds in the DRC, we explored different control scenarios:
Improved case detection has the largest impact, but even a moderately effective vaccine could markedly reduce mortality, either through ring or community vaccination.

Ebola has reached a 7th province in Congo.
A 23-year-old man traveled more than 2,000 km over about 3 weeks, passing through Rwanda and Uganda and then across Congo before dying in Sud-Ubangi.
His journey shows the challenge of containing the virus as it moves along busy transport corridors.

The #Ebola Bundibugyo #outbreak in #DRC has surpassed another sad milestone and is now the deadliest in the history of the country (bearing in mind that the previous one lasted 2 years and we have no accumulated more deaths since this one was declared in May, i.e. in less than four months).
I am saddened but not really surprised. The situation in the ground remains incredibly complex. This outbreak has the potential to reach or even surpass the scale of the West African Ebola outbreak.

Der Ebola-Ausbruch in der Demokratischen Republik Kongo ist inzwischen der zweitgrößte, den die Welt je gesehen hat.
Was passiert da? Und warum ist dieser Ausbruch anders als viele die es vorher gab?
Wir haben in den letzten Wochen genau darüber berichtet:

The #Ebola#Bundibugyo outbreak in DRC's Ituri province is now the 2nd largest in known history, having overtaken the 2018-2020 outbreak in North-Kivu & Ituri in a matter of 2.5 months.
Hard to say how big this one will get. Can't see it ending anytime soon.
Following the 42-day monitoring period, Uganda declared the end to the 2026 #Ebola#bundibugyo outbreak. Minister of Health Dr. Baryomunsi attributed success to continued investment and strengthened public health #preparedness, lab capacity, #surveillance, and joint efforts.

The recorded death toll from the Ebola outbreak in the DRC is about to cross 1,000 cases.
In reality there have likely been a lot more deaths already. Many new cases appear to have no link to known cases, suggesting much of the spread is still happening in the dark.
Yesterday marked two months since the DRC declared the ongoing Ebola outbreak, @drtedros.who.int says in presser.
"It's now the third largest Ebola outbreak on record, and in the past months, it has expanded faster than any previous outbreak."
“Preparedness cannot begin when an outbreak is declared. It must be built and sustained in advance.”
🚨 The Ebola outbreak in the DRC, caused by the Bundibugyo virus, must serve as a wake-up call to the world, says ITM Professor of Virology Kevin Ariën in Nature. Read more: tinyurl.com/3pjfj29n
#Ebola: DRC is trailing in posting new numbers. They had been posting on a one-day delay, but there have been some gaps of late.
The numbers as of 6/29:
1,333 confirmed cases, 399 of which were fatal.
An increase of 26 new cases from the previous day.
A hike in contacts identified, which is good.
I am very honoured to have had my work on disease emergence and pandemic preparedness highlighted together with the work of @ksbakes.bsky.social in this @cam.ac.uk Research Profile. Thank you to everyone who is making this research possible.

The current Ebola outbreak, alongside a recent hantavirus incident in a very different setting, is a reminder of how outbreak risk is actually unfolding today.
As both a researcher in this space and someone who has worked in outbreak response, this pattern is becoming increasingly familiar.
The concern here is not a global Ebola pandemic.
It is the severe, localised impact on already fragile systems, and what it tells us about how risk is changing.
The challenge is less about single outbreaks, and more about whether preparedness is keeping up with that shift.
Both Ebola and hantavirus are zoonotic. These outbreaks are not random.
They are linked to combinations of ecological disruption, changing human–animal contact, insecurity, and environmental change.
Preparedness and prevention have to be prioritised where risk is highest.
The current Ebola outbreak, alongside a recent hantavirus incident in a very different setting, is a reminder of how outbreak risk is actually unfolding today.
As both a researcher in this space and someone who has worked in outbreak response, this pattern is becoming increasingly familiar.
In eastern DRC, the Ebola outbreak is unfolding in a context of insecurity, cross‑border movement, and constrained response capacity.
Different strain, no approved vaccine, aid cuts, limited trust, high mobility. These are not side issues. They shape what response is possible.
At the same time, preparedness and surveillance are still often organised around individual pathogens (although change in that domain is underway).
But real-world crises do not arrive one by one. They overlap, interact, and place simultaneous strain on health systems and governance.
The current Ebola outbreak, alongside a recent hantavirus incident in a very different setting, is a reminder of how outbreak risk is actually unfolding today.
As both a researcher in this space and someone who has worked in outbreak response, this pattern is becoming increasingly familiar.
These are not isolated events. They sit within a wider landscape of growing socio‑ecological complexity, fragility, and interdependence.
Risk is not contained within single diseases or places. It is distributed across systems, environments, and contexts.
Our next Epinowcast session will focus on #Ebola.

There’s a LOT going on as researchers and public health experts race to respond to the Ebola Bundibugyo outbreak in DRC and Uganda before it grows bigger.
Some really important questions still open, but also a few answers coming into view🧪
My overview in @science.org is here (and thread coming):
Great to see the sequence from the #Andes virus case in Switzerland shared so quickly.
Rapid open data sharing is critical during outbreaks — it allows us to monitor for mutations, support diagnostic development, and understand transmission dynamics

Proud supervisor moment! 🎉
It’s been a pleasure to supervise Kellerine Quah (soon to be Dr Kellerine Quah) for her MPhil dissertation back in 2023. That dissertation has now reached the wider world as a published article in @plosglobalpublichealth.orgjournals.plos.org/globalpublic...
I first met Kellerine in an outbreak response seminar and then discovered she happened to be a student of
@downingcollege.bsky.social where I was a fellow. Very soon after, she trusted me to supervise her MPhil dissertation.
Kellerine is now excelling in a DPhil at Oxford, and last month she, our co-author Jingtong, and I celebrated the article’s acceptance by running the #TTPCambridgeHalf Marathon together.
We are delighted to announce that the University of Cambridge has received a commitment of £190 million – the biggest individual donation to a British university in modern times – to establish the Rokos School of Government.
