My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today.
Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.
FCC chair Brendan Carr has continually attempted to attack the media in service of President Trump's agenda.
But the Constitution is clear: The government can't punish broadcasters for their reporting.
Measles is absolutely tearing through unvaccinated communities.
There were more new cases of measles in the US in the past seven days (330) than we had in ALL of 2024 (285).
A total 4,410 cases this year, which everyone agrees is an undercount.

Will it actually make any difference if Democrats take control of Congress after the midterms?
Historian and expert on authoritarianism Timothy Snyder shares his thoughts.
Iowa farmers are desperately trying to tell leaders how difficult the economy has become for small business owners.
Instead of listening, Trump blames Democrats for high prices and calls polls showing competitive Congressional races "fake."
Babies who don’t get the vitamin K shot are 81 times more likely to develop severe bleeding.
In many cases, oxygen can’t reach their brains and blood pools around their skulls.

Because nothing screams "we're hard at work making AI safer" than a White House lunch with other tech overlords where the president insists you call it Super Intelligence.
I am so triggered by RJK Jr's comment about ICU's being empty during #COVID. I re-read what I wrote after one of the surges. How do others forget. The trauma was--and is--real.
Insurers sometimes deny coverage citing lack of progress, labeling patients’ conditions as chronic.
Yet if they do make progress, insurers have also used that to argue patients no longer need treatment.
Doctors are left to walk a tightrope.

NEW: Congress appropriated $1 trillion for defense this year, more than twice as much as the combined budget for agencies overseeing health, veterans affairs, education, housing, agriculture and justice.
We’re setting out to report on how this public money is being spent.
The Trump administration is poised to loosen controls on methane, a potent greenhouse gas, from low-producing “stripper wells.”
Critics say the deregulation will significantly increase climate pollution while doing little to boost energy output.
Republicans didn't win the last decade on votes alone. They won it in state legislatures, drawing maps that made their minority look like a majority. In 2026, Democrats are running the same play. The next decade depends on whether they match that commitment.
New York, here’s how you can save a life:
1. Go to nyc.gov/naloxone to get free overdose-reversal medication, also known as Narcan®.
2. If you or someone you love is struggling with substance use, call 988 for confidential recovery resources.
Every day, doctors use medical tests to diagnose and treat diseases. But what if the assumptions behind some of these tests are wrong and rooted in racist pseudoscience?
This week on Reveal, we team up with @nejm.org to find out why.

"Police officers who tried to save Descamps' life can be heard voicing sorrow and anger at his lack of treatment. 'That guy does not need to be dead right now,' one officer said. 'Their mindset there [at the hospital] is "Oh, it's just another tweaker."'"
Basically I never call the cops to eject anyone from the ER.
For one, there's no endgame - legally they can just walk right back in.
But also, it's possible to be wrong about "there's nothing wrong with them."

Gerrymandering lets politicians choose their voters instead of the other way around.
Until we end that, it will remain difficult to achieve the things most Americans already agree on.
The cost of groceries has become one of the defining challenges of the affordability crisis.
That's why our municipal grocery stores will offer a 30% discount on the grocery staples New Yorkers depend on — from meat to produce to dairy.
Anna King, a combat veteran, was assaulted at her DC home when National Guard troops pinned her down, kneeled on her back, and handcuffed her so tightly that she required surgery.

I'm old enough to remember when polio put my friends into iron lungs.
We dutifully lined up at school to get vaccinated. We eradicated the disease. We protected the common good and saved lives.
What RFK Jr. is doing to public health in America is a disgrace.

It’s flooding season, New York — but city government is prepared.
This morning, we announced a $43.2 million expansion in the Bureau of Coastal Resiliency — a team of engineers, field inspectors, and city planners ready to protect our city from flooding.
Huge corporations like Amazon, Walmart, and Uber are among the top employers of SNAP and Medicaid recipients.

Flock cameras—solar-powered, automated license plate readers, weighing less than 3 pounds and designed to be unobtrusive—can be found on 80,000 street corners throughout the country.
Now, dozens of reports are emerging of police using the cameras not to solve crimes, but to stalk people.
This morning in Biddeford, Maine, a 26-year-old man said goodbye to his wife and daughter and left for work. Moments later he was dead, shot in the head by ICE agents, the second man ICE has killed in six days.

Under DHS’ use-of-force policy, moves that cut off a person's breathing “must not be used as a means to control non-compliant subjects or persons resisting arrest.”
But videos we reviewed showed agents using these restraints to do just that.
