Shoutout to @violetbfox.bsky.social for pulling in some numbers for an issue a few of us (re: not enough of us) have been yelling about for a while now: The new limits on student loans are going to keep a lot more people out of librarianship - and in more debt, too. acrlog.org/2026/10/22/s...

even if you don't think you'll use Ebay again, if you still have an active account you should click through on the email you got and opt-out!

eBay users! Don't ignore today's email, even though it looks like a boring standard update to the User Privacy Notice. They want to use your data to train AI models. If you click the link over the words "the right to object", it takes you to a page with a toggle button letting you opt out.

you can't be serious. This reads Meta/Facebook/Insta is looking to grant itself the rights to scrape websites across the open web - and train Meta's AI - if a company after Oct 30, 2026 uses Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp or other Meta services. So every biz. Read that again. Outrageous. 1/5

Academia (especially tenured faculty) needs to think about this and I appreciate the reminder. :-/

There is a bias that you carry when you are anointed by the system. It is a bias that says the system MUST be good, for having recognized you. Because you ARE special. You WERE deserving. And it is hard to look that bias straight in the face and think: yeah, maybe I wasn't.

"Libraries should be open late as an alternative to the bar" is going around some groups I'm in again and I just Y'all can't convince enough people to fund libraries to be open during the day with reasonable pay and expectations Where do you think you're finding night shift premium pay money

We found that the most gendered experience wasn’t work-life balance, the focus of most retention efforts. It was feeling devalued, in formal evaluations, but particularly in everyday interactions. Unlike every other topic, the gender gap in devaluation was larger among more senior faculty.

No joke. I think this is the most important video I have ever seen about mobile games. This guy breaks down how this game psychologically profiles you, and makes the game harder or easier in order to show you ads

High school spent lots of time and effort warning me my friends would try to get me to use drugs, and they never did. But no one warned me about the enthusiasm for kitchen gadgets people would have, and I'm sorry maybe I'm just weak, but I'm buying a rotary cheese grater because I want to fit in.

I don't know if this is a surprise to anyone else, but the flu vaccine and pneumonia vaccines are different vaccines. Just in case that's helpful information.

I'm in a tabletop rpg and a tree killed my character, so I made a theater kid turned paladin. What are some actual musicals or plays but with the titles from a fantasy world that I can work into conversation? Examples: 12 Angry Gnomes Crossbow Bolts over Broadway The Goblins in the Band

Tabaxi on a Hot Tin Roof Daddy's Been Re-Animated (Who's Got the Will) A Few Good Dwarves Waiting for Godot but Godot's a Dragon Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Undead Etc. Thanks for any suggestions, I'm not super into theater so deep cuts might go over my head but all suggestions are welcome!

This US Labor Day, we're celebrating our NLRB election landslide win✊️ We're proud of this milestone and our strong union. Excited for what's next as we work to make WMF the best workplace it can be across our global workforce. Chaotic Enby's full quote [1], one of 2,000 volunteers who stood with us:

We know how to teach books in the age of AI: small classes, close reading, research-engaged learning (which is how you ’let students see you struggle’). The issue is nobody will hire and pay the requisite # of faculty to offer this.

WE DID IT ✊ WMF US workers voted 158 YES to 14 NO: 91.9% of ballots cast, with 81% turnout. We could not have done it without the solidarity of Wikimedia volunteers. We stand with our UK siblings in their recognition process now and with future organizing efforts across WMF's 🌍 workforce
