Hi new followers! Time for a new introduction post, if only because the link for my book is through a different publisher. (Yay media conglomeration? Wait no). I'm a linguist and anthropologist. I used to be an academic, now I'm just writing. I wrote one book! I'm working on another.

bloomsbury.comThe Relationship PeopleJapan has often been portrayed as a mysterious, sexless, troubled land. Birth rates and marriage rates have been decreasing for decades, and national surveys sh…

Someone should please hire me and my partner to improve Spider-man and His Amazing Friends (the new Disney+ one) Because DISNEY MARVEL WHAT ARE YOU DOING why are you giving Zola a cute song and dance about how mean he is? This show needs STILT-MAN, we can fix this.

My pal Danielle Koenig shared that her father Walter Koenig passed away last night at age 90. A performer whose kindness and warmth shone through the screen. He will be well remembered.

I could spend the rest of my life analysing this feedback sign in the local Home Bargains. Did 'not happy' break from overuse? Was it taped over to ensure 100% positive feedback? Is the green 'b' in 'feedback' some kind of subliminal nudge? Is the duck tape indent because people still keep pressing?

the Spanish subjunctive IS terrifying coming from English, like, thanks for reminding me of my mortality while trying to talk about dinner plans 😭

There's a whiteboard outside my office where I ask random silly questions. This round, I asked them to draw something spooky. There are some real bangers on it right now.

YEP. And if you're not eating, any food at all is healthy.

Kade Peregrine@kadeperegrine.bsky.social

And sometimes what's "healthy" for the average human is entirely useless. Some folks need high fat and protein (adrenal insufficiency I think?), the POTS gang need high salt, folks with low blood sugar need something sugary, folks who've burned a lot of energy will need something high energy...

Look it is fucked-up and unhelpful to expect a single person to do this (and yet we do it all the time), and it is even more fucked up and less helpful for human happiness to put this nonsense on a car. a CAR.

in a dark sort of irony, this too is gender: we displace agency from men onto women as a way of excusing their abuse—what did you say to make him hit you? likewise, the (male-coded) political right is always understood as being provoked by the (female & queer-coded) left

Be sure to regard anyone named John, Matthew, Luke, Mark, or Paul with equal suspicion since they are, after all, named for central literary figures in a violent global religion. Sorry Paul McCartney.

Economic sociology and economic anthropology are entire specialties where sociologists and anthropologist both listen to and take on economics—and also study economic behaviors in terms economists never even imagine. Get back to me when you come from a field that actually does get talked over.

Anyway, family-uber-alles-ness is a form of petit nationalism and I will explore that further at a later date or maybe never

I think the wee beastie (3 on Monday) has officially stopped napping. I think in lieu of a nap we're still going to have "quiet time" in the afternoons because they seem to benefit from that and also I need it. I need it.

Questions I have about WALL-E (2008): • Did every human go to space? • If not, what happened to the humans that remained on earth? • What happened to all of the people on the starliners that weren't the Axiom? It's bleak!!

Basically, I'm fine with an analysis of non-monogamy that engages with the ways in which its practices can be shaped according to patriarchal cultural assumptions and desires. But if that's inherently delegitimizing to the entire enterprise, I have some quite bad news for you about monogamy

Asher HELLbein@asherelbein.bsky.social

The simple fact of the matter is that any form of relationship can be leveraged in coercive, dishonest, unethical, and messy ways, because there is no group of people incapable of being coercive, dishonest, unethical and messy. And sometimes people just want different things

And then funny thing is, "this data is public so we can grab it and scrape it" is something people have been contesting for at least 20 years in internet research ethics discussions

Whether or not ppl cutting off their parents is an actual phenomenon (is it, really?) or just clicky outrage bait, anti-estrangement is a paternalistic, socially regressive position — it’s so similar to being anti-divorce that the two are virtually indistinguishable.
