Heartbroken to learn that another person has been killed on our roads. Raven Prince was a mother of 3 and a beloved member of the community. A fundraiser has been set up to help with the memorial service. www.gofundme.com/f/raven-prince

This will take place just south of Nanaimo / Snuneymuxw on so-called Vancouver Island.

Disappointed that Krog is mayor for another term, but excited for some new faces on council, plus some excellent incumbents. Impressed by Lovegrove’s campaign as first-time mayoral candidate. She lost by 2K votes, a clear indication that Nanaimo is tired of Krog + wanting hopeful leadership.

Daily ritual of loading up the enrichment box with treats! Bertie asks (meow-screams) every day for his ‘treat time’ anytime starting from 1pm. The treats get put in the box of crumpled paper so he has to snuffle around, lift out the paper and generally work a bit for his treats.

The Liberals and Conservatives teamed up again today — funny how that keeps happening — to get Bill C-39 over the hurdle of its first vote. The massive, 243-page bill bulldozes environmental protections, Indigenous rights and attacks the right to strike. Here's what this means:

A little late, but 6 months with Bertie! He loves to snuggle + nap, but only when he isn’t: meowing, yowling, galloping, running, sneaking, somersaulting, jumping, biting, scratching, eating. Fave toys are: golf ball, dented ping pong ball, tattered red ribbon, a sushi-shaped mini stuffie.

He loves to push precious, favourite, hand-potted ceramics off of the kitchen counter when I’m indisposed on work calls. What a guy!

This native plant talk looks really great for folks on so-called Vancouver Island: Grow Healthy & Beneficial Native Plants in Urban Spaces with Kyle Clarke of PEPAKEṈHÁUTW̱. Scroll for in-person info or online reg (yay for accessible events!) npsg.ca Victoria Nanaimo Duncan British Columbia

Yes! Native plants belong in urban areas. They provide biodiversity, cooling + reinforce our part as humans in the larger system of Nature. We aren’t separate from Nature! Excited to see how these bus shelters test + if they’re a success.

Could new bus shelter roofs help New Yorkers stay cool in extreme heat? We're testing a few in Brownsville to find out: a green roof covered with native plants, and reflective roofs covered with low-cost, heat-resilient film.

Good news! Would like to see officials encouraging folks to wear proper respirator masks / N95 to protect against the wildfire smoke and ash.

From the Penticton Sikh gurdwara … hundreds of meals prepared by volunteers and sent to people who have been evacuated by the fire. Delivered to parking lots where people were camped out and other spaces evacuees have gathered.

My heart hurts for all the people being evacuated from towns burning down from wildfires and rages at politicians and shareholders who continue with pipelines and data centres like it’s business as usual.

Terrifying and heart-breaking. This is because of climate change, unfettered oil and gas development and logging. My family is safely evacuated. Thinking of everyone there, including the domestic and wild animals plus all of the places that make Summerland special. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

Due to the wildfires currently burning in the Pacific Northwest it is being projected that smoke will once again blanket many regions, which is a reminder yet another important reminder that as long as you’re breathing there’s still time for you to start masking again.

This is one of the few remaining Garry Oak Ecosystems left in Nanaimo as we insist on razing every last inch of this type of beautiful ecosystem instead of protecting it. This spot needs the same sort of public outcry as we’ve seen in protecting Cable Bay and Rocky City Wetlands.

We need to ban foreign ownership of BC farmland immediately. The super-billionaire heir to the Walmart fortune, Stan Kroenke, now controls over 13% of BC’s farmland - this is a threat to BC’s sovereignty, food security and farmers. Read the Tyee’s in-depth coverage on this issue.
