Retirement age should decline with every increase in worker productivity. It should be reset to 50 and then decline from there. Enough of this crap about "people are living longer so they need to work longer."

After reading Waste Wars I have been thinking about all the plastic I see in daily life, and asking myself, "Could this be replaced with another material, like wood/metal/rubber/glass/paper?" It is crazy that our globe isn't doing more to phase out plastic as much as possible.

Even if some things need to stay plastic like certain medical devices or pieces of machinery with a long useful life, we could be doing way more to replace many common uses of plastic that have a short useful life and a very long durable lifespan.

There's a spectrum with "AI denialism" on one end, "AI fanaticism" on the other end, and "AI scepticism" around the middle. A lot of smart people I respect are too far on the denialism end due to social and political reasons and don't take a realistic objective look at what these tools can do.

Oh! Thou who burn'st in heart for those who burn In Hell, whose fires thyself shall feed in turn; How long be crying, 'Mercy on them, God!' Why, who are thou to teach and He to learn?

It seems weird that Wikipedia has retroactively made the US Space Force decades old and responsible for GPS, considering that the Space Force was created in Trump's first term

US Military intelligence hasn't been pushing the UFO nonsense on americans recently... guess they're waiting for the next bout of serious civil unrest to jangle the keys again

Really wish BlueSky didn't have the terrible UI issue of blocking the back arrow with "Reply Posted" notification. When I post a reply I want to hit the back button immediately! Don't cover the damn thing up! @bsky.app

In the United States any history of life in communist countries is like, "People were only allowed to use the toilet one day a week!" or "The citizens were required to walk backwards because communism is evil!" Totally worthless propaganda.

According to Bloomberg, many of the weather service people in the US who lost their jobs now work at hedge funds. So weather prediction has been privatized by wall street. They'll get the most accurate weather forecasts first so they can trade on it.

Although he obviously could have done a much better job at the obfuscation. 10 years in prison for merely a few hundred thousand dollars of damage? How many trillions of dollars of damage is Musk doing to the entire US right now?

Open source hardware and software turns tinkering into a social activity. It links the maker with others and brings a social aspect into hobbyist engineering.

How cool would it be if the US had an opposition party? Rather than two far right parties who ride on each other's yachts and vacation at each other's chalêts?

Replaying Ixion. Such an amazing soundtrack and sound design. The audio logs play differently if you're inside with acoustic echos, or outside over radio. Plus, if Starship is gonna keep blowing up at least I can pretend we have working interplanetary crewed spaceships.

We are long past due for someone (more skilled than me) to make a web app that takes an image from the user and applies the "Computer, zoom and enhance" effect from Blade Runner to it as an animated gif.

The first time I used a UK phone, I was so excited when I heard the dial tone because I thought, "Wow! The dial tone from that Pink Floyd song! Cool!" Always thought it was just some weird affect of the song, but nope- they were just using a UK phone.

No matter how many sports posts I mark as "Show me less like this" I still get 1 out of 10 posts being sports chat. They might be too varied to be caught by BlueSky's algorithm.

At this point I assume Elon Musk hasn't walked on a city sidewalk in years or been anywhere near regular people since that Chapelle Show stage where he got booed.

Now that every piece of data from the US Treasury and other federal departments, including their COBOL source code, is getting vacuumed up by Musk, future versions of Grok will be able to accidentally spit out training data chunks including people's SSNs and tax info and the source code.

My theories about what Musk might want with that Treasury access: 1. Theft- workd's richest man robs world's largest bank 2. Data - a massive data set to add to the huge databanks that AI gets trained on 3. Leverage - he who controls the Treasury controls the entire US economy, government, and ...

... even the global economy to a large extent 4. Implanting future access. A backdoor (technological or political) would be nice to call upon in the future 5. Getting dirt on enemies 6. Selling limited access for friends and allies

YES this is what bugs me- many of these universities have endowments that are so big they're like a nation's sovereign wealth fund. They could easily pay the pitifully low salaries of their students and researchers while they push to reinstate the federal funding.

Dr. Devon Cantwell-Chavez@devoncantwell.bsky.social

Especially since some of these universities are sitting on billions of dollars in their endowments and have a donor base they can activate if push came to shove

The patriotic, america loving liberals on here need to figure this out. But they won't, because they are wealthy and own their homes and are probably landlords themselves.

Lifehack- you can just grow rhizomes like ginger and turmeric. Just lay it on dirt and the plant knows what to do! (Shown here sharing the pot of another bush)

For the past week English language twitter has literally only two topics: DeepSeek and birth control. What a dead, abandoned-but-noisy haunted house that place is.

Cuba and North Korea should each offer Trump some prime real estate on which he could build a hotel in exchange for thawing relations. Would be a massive net gain for world peace in exchange for one garish building in each country.

What do we think the arts are gonna be like over the next four years? I think movies and tv are all gonna be garbage, even moreso than the last 5 years. Ofc there will be an occasional gem of something well made and/or at least NEW. But defunding plus AI plus fear of anything different ain't good
