EA was the reason Bioware got shut down, not the devs for Veilguard. If you're too blinded to see that and defending EA or blaming Dragon Age, go play your madden and pay full price for roster updates every year. You're an easy mark for them.

How it feels right now

I love how Miyamoto gave a press conference to accept his award from the Japanese government in front of the famous “originality” calligraphy display located within Nintendo headquarters. It made me think of the old Directs where Iwata also used to present in front of it.

There is something so soul crushing about creating art that pushes the needle in the games industry, only to be thanked by using the capital gained from said art to push the ones who created it out of a job.

EA's closure of BioWare is transparently a vile move to shutter the studio that made by far their queerest titles. In the wake of this, I implore you: MAKE MORE QUEER ART. Make it trans. Make it horny. Make it scary. Make it loving. Make it with every inch of yourself. Flood the world with it!

I literally don't have words for the news of EA closing Bioware. Unconscionable, incompetent, soulless decision-making. May everyone involved in these decision suffer Renegade interrupts for the rest of their lives.

The allegory of returning to your childhood home to find it bulldozed doesn't suffice. Because a few new houses might replace the old house and become homes to new families. No, this closure only serves the parasites.

BioWare closing is so depressing. Compounding it for me is how predictable it is at a time where creative institutions --studios where artists were nurtured, resourced and trusted to MAKE THINGS -- are being harvested for parts. Emblematic of a soul-sick world.

I want to say something about the Bioware closure, about how their games inspired me and asked more from me and broadened my view of what was possible with story in games, but I am so, so, so tired. I want better for all of us. Wishing everyone the best.

I was at BioWare over 12 years. It's where I got started writing games. I met and worked alongside wonderful people. Kind, talented, passionate. I learned a lot. I helped create some amazing stories that I'm glad made it out into the world. The people and the stories are what I cherish most.

Consolidation is killing our industry. The Gamergaters who make money off the rage game will have you think this is a victory. This is purely a loss. A loss of work and art and fun and expression in a space that desperately needs it. Massive fucking bummer.

The very last task I had at BioWare before I left to pursue a new opportunity was to paint this pose of Solas embracing the Inquisitor (I didn't paint this entire image, it was just the figures). Even at the time it felt poignant that this would be my last contribution to Dragon Age.
