I’m seeing people reacting by pointing out that he’s obviously wrong. I appreciate that, but it’s also a pointless exercise. The problem isn’t that he’s wrong. The problem is that this is normal in American politics — and it’s been normal for a while.

Anthony Albanese is such a vindictive, spiteful PoS

Fatima Payman has been left waiting by Anthony Albanese for TWENTY THREE MONTHS for additional staff requested partly in light of the extremely high number of threats she continues to face during her time as an Independent senator. Other independent Senators have been approved.

We knew it was a new record for the region, with no lampreys known from Moreton Bay, though had no idea we'd stumbled on a new species. When I moved to Hobart, I connected David up with Fisheries Tas for lamprey DNA samples & the real discovery work began!

This research is the ~25 year on tail of a single moment from my first 'scientist' gig doing fish surveys with David. We were electrofishing in the Great Sandy Nat Park when I realised the "elvers" we'd picked up were ammocetes: larval lampreys. www.abc.net.au/news/2026-08...

Few people like killing animals, & nobody who likes it should work in conservation. But sadly, as Euan explains, it can be necessary. Some people think that choosing not to kill invasive animals is a passive kindness, but it’s a cruel choice to not help the native animals killed by invasive animals.

Professor Euan Ritchie FAMS@euanritchie.bsky.social

Recently, there was quite a furore in Australia's parliament about invasive species management. It seemed to me there was some misunderstanding about terminology & the very important reasons for controlling some introduced & invasive species. So, I wrote this 👉 theconversation.com/calling-spec...

And, most importantly, thanks to the vital mobilisation of young people. Students took to the streets the day after the first round elections, kickstarting massive movements that saw the largest public demonstrations in Brazil since the days of Diretas Já at the end of the military dictatorship.

It's really important to pay attention to the fact that Lula beat the fascist candidate not by compromising and trying to meet fascist voters in the middle, but by sticking to his guns, promising prosecutions for election interference, and mobilising his own voters to turn out in greater numbers.

The achievement of Serbian students overthrowing Aleksandar Vučić can't be overstated. In 2024, they began protesting. In 2025, they transformed a protest movement into civil dissidence. In 2026, they became a political party — and two months later, crushed a corrupt state-entrenched authoritarian.

There are unemployed unions, renters unions etc as well as traditional worker unions, for anyone who doesn't have one. Other options? I'd like to join a 'Residents Who Want to Live in a Decent Place Union.' Like: let's be nice to migrants and teenagers and make sure there's somewhere to sit down.

Do something, anything in your community. Cook a community meal. Volunteer with a local org. Plant a tree. Join your union

I’ve just finished writing a (brief) chapter in my next book about this. DDT, too! We have in living memory collectively, as a planet, got together and said “we need to stop doing this.” And we’ve stopped doing it! (Granted the DDT thing took a few decades to happen planet-wide BUT NONETHELESS)

Chris Kluwe, adjudicated poaster@chriswarcraft.bsky.social

There was a fucking hole in our planet’s *atmosphere* Like a legit, no joke, “this will unravel our entire ecosystem” hole in the world, and then we fixed it by working together across national and political lines As a species we decided, “we will survive” Let’s do that some more

Happy butterfly season! AKA that time of year when I have to remind myself annually that the “blue” butterfly with two spots and a line on its wings is *not* the two-spotted line-blue

In my defence it wasn’t until I cropped some of the photos I took of it that I saw the tiny little tails on its hind wings, which would’ve reminded me instantly that it was a long-tailed pea-blue

Fired up my night vision binoculars, pointed them at the sky and uh… all of the motionless points of light are stars. All of the ones that are moving are insects 😮

This is either completely dishonest or completely clueless from the PM and is disgraceful. The page doing the rounds clearly attacks Haines and implies she has double standards on porkbarrelling and may have hidden conflicts of interest.

I can’t express just how absolutely grotesque it is to take a very recent and horrific crime which, if anything, can be tied to our culture’s ongoing indifference to male violence against women, and try through anguished mental gymnastics to blame it instead on people who want to stop a genocide

Let me get this straight. Colonisation, The Black Wars, murder, dispossession, the Stolen Generation, the over-representation of Aboriginal prisoners in jails, none of this was political violence? Or is this another one of those transgressions that can only be applied to white people?

Hmm… I think this *might* be a bogong? The wing markings don’t look 100% right (there should be a clear pale teardrop-shaped patch at the top of the black stripe) and there are dozens of other moths in the same genus, but it’s also just a phone photo. If I saw it during the day I’d be able to tell.

Pretty sure I saw one outside my window in outer north-eastern Melbourne today! It was bogong sized and coloured and looked like it was rolling with fat, and it had *some* kind of markings on its wings, but I didn’t get a good enough look at them to be absolutely certain
