The Giants matched last season's win total in 7 games They're top 10 in total defense despite being 30th in yards allowed per carry They're on 3rd QB with J.J. McCarthy The run game was shaky until yesterday against the No. 3 run defense This team is something else www.newsday.com/sports/colum...

newsday.comEvan Barnes: For Giants, it's sweet redemption for Cam Skattebo, running game and J.J. McCarthyA week after John Harbaugh called out his running backs, Cam Skattebo and Devin Singletary ran for a combined 72 yards on the final two plays of overtime to give the Giants the victory.

I had my doubts last year about a Dodgers repeat. Had my doubts in March about a three-peat. Winning is hard to sustain. Age catches up. The toll is heavy. Another team finds the breaks you used to have. That's why I enjoy the ride. Talent on paper never guarantees anything. Respect to the Brewers

The Donnie Moore game was 40 years ago today. Wow. Dave Henderson's home run changed that ALCS and sadly, we know the tailspin Moore flew into after that. Still a wild game knowing both LCS that year had all-time thrillers.

1981 / 1986 News@40yearsago.bsky.social

[October 12th, 1986] The Boston Red Sox defeated the California Angels 7-6 in 11 innings to stay alive in the American League playoffs. Reserve player Dave Henderson led the comeback with a two-run homer and a winning sacrifice fly. California leads the series 3-2.

Almost 24 hours after kickoff and that Giants' tie with the Commanders still had some of the worst end-of-game clock management I've seen. I've covered some funny HS games and I don't think I've seen that before.

Maybe it was fitting that Deonte Banks’ penalty got the Cardinals at the Giants 4 yard line. A play that would’ve defined his tenure of rough showings, losing his starting job and penalties. But he redeemed himself with his biggest play as a Giant. 2nd straight week defense made a game-ending play

3 TDs, 2 INTs for Jameis Winston. But importantly, a second straight W on his watch. And perhaps more important. Deonte Banks found redemption after a much maligned Giants career. Game-sealing Pick 6. Giants are 3-1 and alone atop the NFC East.

It's a rainy, windy day here at MetLife Stadium. Some call it football weather. I just call weather folks happen to play football in. We'll see how Jameis Winston handles his 1st start this Giants season. But expect a lot of the run game to support him

What a great music anniversary date. Tribe’s Low End Theory Chili Peppers’ Blood Sugar Sex Magik Nirvana - Nevermind. I still remember being overwhelmed in college by the bass on Low End and the wild energy of BSSM. Teen Spirit still sounds amazing. Salute to 3 incredible records

Since Ohtani got hurt, I've accepted Pete Crow-Armstong is the front-runner for MVP. Another talented SoCal kid in the majors who's producing.

25 years ago, the Giants returned to Newark Airport from Monday Night Football. At the next gate was United Flight 93, the last plane to be hijacked on 9/11 Spoke to Tiki Barber & Amani Toomer about that day & the aftermath of how the team helped a city try to heal www.newsday.com/sports/footb...

newsday.comFormer Giants stars Tiki Barber, Amani Toomer discuss the immediate aftermath of 9/11 attacksThe Giants became one of several beacons of hope for New York. But like many people, players had difficulty processing what they saw and felt.

Colson Whitehead's become one of my favorite writers the last few years (just finished the 2nd of his Harlem trilogy). His books about New York helped me understand the city I've lived in since 2023. Didn't know all this time he wrote about 9/11 so this is a must read

We knew how good we had it with OutKast albums. But it's still crazy that it's been 20 years since the last one. I appreciate Big Boi's solo career. Enjoyed Dre's flute record. I accept that if we don't get another 'Kast album, I'm grateful we got to enjoy them being game-changers.

Did a solo trip to Miami. Got a hotel on South Beach, ate at a great spot, found a rum bar, sipped sangria while laying in the sun, met up with another friend celebrating her bday at this fancy steakhouse I got great advice to do something I hadn't done before so I followed that.

What'd you do for your 40th birthday? Mine is approaching 😬

Anytime i see a Wordle with a word I’ve never seen, I wonder who uses these words everyday. Like today? Never heard that sucker before. And yet my streak persists. Somehow.

Much needed love for the 90s ska era. I remember hearing this song so much and loving the burst of joy it gave me.

I read Nancy Armour's full column. That paragraph everyone pointed out made more sense when you read her full points. Nancy's always been advocating for the right things in her work. Either people missed the context or don't understand the dangerous level of behavior we're seeing in these stans.

W players have gotten death threats/racist hate from people trying to defend Caitlin. It's no different than Henry Aaron catching hell when he was approaching the Babe's record 50+ yrs ago. Protecting Whiteness has always brought out extremists/folks with racist ideas. So I get what Nancy was saying

But I wonder if the furor was about people reacting emotionally vs reading slower and thinking rationally. Because that's typically how we get here to such talk. Social media invokes emotion. Pull out a graf from a longer read to incite emotion w/o full context. That's also part of this, I think.

Idk why I thought Slippery When Wet dropped in 87, not 86. What a great song. Hit em with the chorus right away and don't let off the gas til the final note.

Yep. The sad thing about ESPN is it's part of a bigger problem. And you can tell who's aware of that by how they discuss these layoffs. Only in Micro terms or macro as part of widespread media layoffs. Whole game is changing and it's bigger than 1 entity.

Joe Ovies@joeovies.bsky.social

RE: ESPN. Layoffs will continue because the greatest business model in the world...cable/satellite fees from homes that never watched...is never coming back. It has nothing to do with insisting on talking about the Dallas Cowboys in the middle of July or McAfee.

The FDA’s been listening to Talking Heads I guess. Cause this is making flipping floppy right in everyone’s faces. If “well actually” needed an example this week….

The New York Times@nytimes.com

The FDA said on Monday that strong evidence still tied Taylor Farms to the continuing cyclospora outbreak, despite the agency’s retraction on Sunday of what it had said was a positive test of a lettuce sample for the parasite.

When I read about this in Jeff Pearlman's book about the 86 Mets, it felt like another part of their epic lore. Better than anybody else and wilder in the streets than anybody else.

1981 / 1986 News@40yearsago.bsky.social

[July 19th, 1986] Three New York Mets players were arrested after a scuffle with a police officer at Cooters. Tim Teufel, Ron Darling, Bob Ojeda, and Rick Aguilera were charged with aggravated assault. The incident occurred early Saturday morning following a night of drinking.

France playing in the World Cup semis with today being Bastille Day seems just right. Either that or today’s an excuse for us Americans to blast “Pompeii” and remember when that Bastille song was everywhere.

This great album soundtracked many of my runs in the 2010s when I discovered "Romeo". Been playing "Breakaway" a lot this last month or so because of that Earth, Wind and Fire sample. "Romeo" and "Jus 1 Kiss" (w/a great Chic sample) are perfect. "Where's Your Head At" = banger from my HS days.

Milwaukee got a lot but I have no idea if that Miami deal scares who it needs to. Knicks scared? No. Celtics? Nah - maybe anger them b/c apparently they had a proposed deal per Shams. Cleveland and Detroit? Eye don't think so Let's see what happens when the ball rolls out.

"It's done, it's dead" (c) Doechii. No more trade rumors or speculation. My Bucks and Heat colleagues can breathe again like Toni Braxton...and get ready for another wild chapter.

Jim Owczarski@jimowczarski.bsky.social

The Milwaukee Bucks have traded Giannis Antetokounmpo to the Miami Heat.

A lot makes you wonder with Len Bias. The Celtics surely would've been good in the 90s with him and Reggie Lewis. What would the drug laws have been if DC didn't overreact to Bias' death. A life cut short had so many ripple effects...

And some of us didn't get put on game until 2004. Thanks Garden State and Natalie Portman. Shins didn't change my life, of course. But "New Slang" goes.

Stereogum@stereogum.com

The Shins’ classic debut album ‘Oh, Inverted World’ was released 25 years ago today. 💿 What's your favorite track?

I like John Denver but I'm surprised that's the artist you go with after Team USA won to get to the knockout rounds. Still, hella respect for these last 2 games. Team USA looked pretty good, good form.
