Definitely the closest I can say a bear has come to my apartment! 😳 Always a great reminder for our community about gleaning fruit trees & securing attractants while bears are bulking up for hibernation 🧸 📍Revelstoke, B.C.

Major news - Selkirk Tangiers spent years pursuing this all-season resort with accommodation for 100 guests & 50 staff. It would’ve been among the biggest commercial developments on a 170-km stretch between Revelstoke & Mica, on the fringes of active habitat for threatened southern mountain caribou.

People power led to a huge win for the wild this week! Thanks to overwhelming public pushback, the Columbia-Shuswap Regional Board (CSRD) voted to deny Selkirk Tangier’s proposal for a large heli-ski lodge near Mars Creek.

Amid the wildfire chaos B.C. is experiencing this summer, I recently lucked out of getting stranded in the Columbia Valley during a massive power outage without food or enough gas. I reflected on the experience & what it taught me about emergency preparedness. revelstokereview.com/2026/08/08/c...

revelstokereview.comCOLUMN: What a Columbia Valley power outage taught me about preparedness - Revelstoke ReviewBritish Columbians must plan for the inevitability of emergency, not the possibility

I learned B.C.’s Minister of Forests was coming to Revelstoke & scored an interview. He called caribou “definitely not the smartest animals” for fleeing from danger. He also concentrated blame for destruction of caribou habitat on wildfires, not logging. revelstokereview.com/2026/06/10/b...

revelstokereview.comB.C. forests minister talks saw mills, old-growth and caribou in Revelstoke - Revelstoke ReviewRavi Parmar spoke with Black Press Media on first visit to community during office

He said he doesn’t support protecting forest for the sake of protecting forest, if it means saw mills shut down. He also told me there’s a common misbelief that 1950s-style clear-cutting rarely happens in B.C. today. Provincial government data says otherwise. It was his 1st visit here as minister.

Some notable excerpts from my interview this week with B.C. Forests Minister Ravi Parmar, right here in Revelstoke.

Wildsight@wildsight.ca

We are deeply disappointed and disheartened by these comments. Ravi Parmar has insinuated that caribou populations are declining, in part, because they are dumb: "Not the smartest animal, that’s for sure.” Caribou are not to blame for the logging of their core habitat.

I don’t usually share my day-to-day reporting from Revelstoke here, but one file I’m proud to finally publish after a few months in the pipe is a deep dive into how global warming is changing our mountain town’s snowy winters & reputation as a skier’s paradise. revelstokereview.com/2026/05/27/r...

Devastating news for such a phenomenal magazine covering the world’s wild wonders. At a time when we need in-depth environmental solutions reporting more than ever, I sincerely hope some generous funders can step up to support @biographic.bsky.social & continue its legacy.

I really, really hate to sharing this, but last week, we @biographic.bsky.social learned that the California Academy of Sciences will no longer be providing the magazine with financial support, including money we were expecting to receive this year. We're in a real bind.

This isn't quite the sure and sudden death we experienced at Hakai Magazine, but it's not pretty. Unless we can make up this shortfall we could be facing deep cuts to our already small team. Aka, if you have a job opening for a science news editor, let me know

Day 3/3 -beware of greenwashing: corporate ads/PR, government sustainability claims, event sponsorship -look for vague language, partial disclosures, misleading visuals -don’t “advertise” specific solutions -focus on people & emotions -tie climate issues to concrete places, rely on local experts

Day 2/3 -make the climate connection -climate more than a weather story -Canada strong in attribution science, BUT don’t need to wait for study to link event to climate -use visuals reflecting threat -highlight that climate makes heatwaves likelier & intensifies wildfire/rainfall/hurricanes/cyclones

Loved this line by Felix Horne: “Without expertise and experience, wildfires are reported without the underlying climate context that fuels them. Energy stories lose their climate dimension. Pollution is treated as an unfortunate accident rather than a foreseeable harm from fossil fuel dependence.”
