UT Linguistics'll have 4 (!) computational linguists! Consider applying! I'm looking for students and also potentially postdocs. For postdocs, particularly interested in philosophically rich issues around AI cognition: Can AI introspect? How can we study if they have preferences?

Lindia Tjuatja@lindiatjuatja.bsky.social

The UT comp ling faculty (@jessyjli.bsky.social @kanishka.bsky.social @kmahowald.bsky.social & myself) are looking for PhD students to join us! sites.utexas.edu/compling/ 🤘 We are an interdisciplinary group with interests across linguistics, cogsci and NLP. Apply by 12/1:

Update: we’re living in Paris this year! 🇫🇷 I’m here as a Fulbright Scholar, doing research and finishing The Bilingual Bubble—the book about everything I got wrong raising my daughter bilingually, as a linguist and SLP who really should have known better 😂 Check it out: instagram.com/thebilingual...

The psychology job market may be showing some early signs of regaining strength, relative to last year. A week ago last year, fewer than 200 jobs had been listed - today, it is nearly 300, a figure we didn't hit till early October in '25. #psychjobs #neurojobs #academicjobs

Great news! Some of us have been waiting a long time for major funders to not just shovel $ into the maws of the big publishers, and instead support the long tail of scholar-controlled journals that are run on a shoestring

Open Journals Collective@ojcollective.bsky.social

We're delighted to share news in the attached press release that the Open Journals Collective has received a major award of $711,900 from the Gates Foundation to grow support infrastructure for community-governed journals! Want to know more about OJC? Visit www.openjournalscollective.org

If this makes you mad, submit your cognitive science research to @openmindjournal.bsky.social No APCs, no subscription fees. It's funded by university libraries, at low cost.

Eric Schares@eschares.bsky.social

🚨Update: Our analysis of global APC expenditure has now been expanded to cover more publishers (7 -> 14) and more years (2019-2025). We estimate $15B in APCs paid over seven years, $3.7B in 2025 alone. Elsevier crosses the $1B threshold by itself in 2025. arxiv.org/abs/2608.16322 #ScholComm

Speech production is fast, complicated, cool (when the right thing is said...) Covert speech is a nice trick to study this. If you like speech planning, forward models, efference copies, brains this work is (we hope) helpful to clarify the brain mechs. #neuroskyence www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

🤖🧠NEW PAPER🧠🤖 (The result of an 8-year project!) LLMs seem very different from symbolic systems. Yet LLMs excel in symbolic domains (e.g., language/code/math). How do they do it? Our finding: LLM representations have implicit symbolic structure! Link in thread ⬇️ 1/n

Go, @andreadevarda.bsky.social! A beautiful and comprehensive study! 🔑 findng: behav. measures are ~fully reducible to simple predictors of processing effort (surprisal, word length+frequency), but for 🧠 measures, LLM embeddings carry additional predictive power, likely capturing aspects of meaning.

Thanks, @deontbenton.bsky.social for your question. AFAIK, arguments against the language network (LN) come in one of four flavors: 1️⃣ The LN is a meaningful construct, but different regions do different things (support different aspects of language). 🧵

No prior or horse in race. Pure curiosity about whether anyone might be arguing against such a network.

Ans to 4: Similar to the ans to 3, it seems weird to deny existing evidence for dissociations without being able to say what's wrong with the evidence. Some folks in this camp also don't think that V1 is a "thing". I am not sure how to meaningfully engage here.

3️⃣ It is not possible to draw any boundaries around language because it interacts so strongly with everything else we do (~all aspects of perception, motor control, and cognition).

Answer to 3: If you take data seriously, you will quickly discover that many things we do draw on distinct systems in the brain. These distinctions do not undermine the fact that these systems *interact* (ofc they must!), but the dissociations are real and meaningful.

Answer to 1: I am not aware of any compelling evidence for strong region-level dissociations within the LN (if defined properly within individuals). There are some weak preferences/biases, and ofc there is lots of complex internal structure that straddles region boundaries.
