Related: I’m still looking for leads and help on jobs, fellowships, and freelance contracts on drones, GIS, aid, disaster, OSINT, tech ethics, and journalism. I simply will not work for evil people and/or weapons manufacturers, which is also why I haven’t had paying work since Trump 2.0 began.

Drone tech has so many incredible applications for so many industries and if you want to make any sort of living you have to work for an illiterate Nazi pervert dweeb who collects erotic anime figurines.

good thread (@vcarchidi.bsky.social you might like this)

Ok fine I'll take the bait.... I'm a constructivist which I think makes me a cop-out on this question, but here goes anyway. The Nat/Emp distinction connects with but is not equal to: 1. The nature-nurture debate 2. Presence at birth 3. Universality 4. Domain-specificity 5. And oh, so much more.

one of the most eye-opening things that came up in discussions with my USian wife is how Ikea-deprived y'all are/have; Canada is RIFE with them and has been for decades (A+ childhood memories of the ball pit)

this is not a thing I talk enough about, but funny jokes aside this is one of the very best confections that exists and I cannot be left unsupervised with a box of these

Info on repairing shit. The ability to type in your make and model of car into YouTube and see an uncle make a video about how to fix any part of it? AMAZING.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

ugh the most queb shit ever sorry y'all my ppl are irksome about this

Optimality theory and Minimalism are older now than SPE and Aspects were when they came out. This is the linguists' equivalent to "Nevermind and Low End Theory are older now than the White Album and Stop in the Name of Love were when they came out".

Question for NON-linguists, especially people with STEM backgrounds: In a textbook, how surprised would you be if there were several pages considering one possible analysis of some data, ending with the conclusion that we therefore have to adopt an entirely different analysis?

i am on a plane sitting next to a lady who looks 40ish and has informed me that this is her first time flying she is visibly excited. she asked the flight attendant how much a soda costs and was happy to learn that drinks are free on airplanes. she's taking lots of pictures. i love this for her

Phreak: "Alright, what are the three most commonly used private keys?" Joey: "156, 115, 55. But not in that order, necessarily, right?" Cereal: "Yeah but don't forget 4. System operators love to use 4. It's that whole male ego thing."

noam@noamchompers.bsky.social

sexualizing someone without their consent is wrong, and attraction inherently involves sexualization (i do acknowledge the resulting view is *slightly* more subtle than my initial gloss, but i'd argue not really, practically speaking)

yeah this

I also think, and maybe this is controversial but it’s just my opinion, it’s ok to just take it on faith that other people are consciousness even as I demand proof that the computer is. I believe this is totally reasonable and normal.

something that occurred to me is, everyone knows it’s possible to become a musician with work and practice. but you can’t work on and practice music while staring slackjawed at your phone. the real promise of generative AI is the ability to ‘make’ ‘art’ without reducing your slackjawed scroll time

1/2 🎇 Good news! 🎇 The kind people at Behavioral and Brain Science have made the new collection on "Conscious AI and biological naturalism" #OpenAccess for a limited time: target article, all 50 commentaries, & my response. Go to the link and click 'save pdf': doi.org/10.1017/S014.... Do share!

TIL that Griffith (of observatory financing fame, inter alia) was actually named Griffith J. Griffith. Incredible shit. (disclaimer: he was not a good dude)

just remembered that Chalmers once wrote a paper about using a RAAM network (pour one out) to encode old-school generative grammar style active/passive transformations (might have been declarative/interrogative?)

Born 2 October 1945, Don McLean is best known for his 1971 hit song "American Pie", an eight-and-a-half-minute folk rock "cultural touchstone" about the death of Buddy Holly and the loss of innocence of the early rock and roll generation. Don is 81 today! #DonMcLean

I think the last ~ 15 years of ML progress has been discovering that once you find the right shape for the structural container for whatever you're modeling then you can learn the other stuff with enough data. For image recognition it's "ocal similar patches. For text it's far associations.
