Exploring the great microbial eukaryote diversity and evolution, one protist at a time. I’m fascinated by this question: how have #plastids evolved? #ProtistsOnSky | Associate Prof at Uppsala University. My lab: https://www.burki-lab.net/

New paper out! We reconstructed amino acid and lipid metabolic pathways in Rhogostoma and relatives (Cercozoa) from transcriptomes. Even very similar-looking species differ considerably, and some pathways appear incomplete, suggesting dependence on their prey. doi.org/10.1016/j.ym... #protistsonsky

I try to do just that in my AE work. I feel like sending again to reviewers has become standard, but it wasn’t like that before right? Say 15-20 years ago

Trevor A. Branch@trevorabranch.bsky.social

Hey editors of scientific journals, I know you are struggling to find reviewers now, so please can you just make a decision after review without sending it back to the reviewers for another round of review after revisions? Especially when the changes are minor and the authors made them all.

Congrats

FEMS@femsmicro.org

Fellows from our European Academy of Microbiology (EAM) came together at the 2026 EAM Summit, 7-9 October, to forge interdisciplinary links stretching across the full breadth of microbiology. FEMS is magnifying microbial impact through the EAM, Europe's expert body of microbiological minds.

Thanks to the committee for selecting this paper. Great surprise and particularly happy for Anders. This was part of his PhD thesis.

Congratulations Anders Alfjorden, et al.! Their paper, "Identification of a new gregarine parasite associated with mass mortality events of freshwater pearl mussels (Margaritifera margaritifera) in Sweden," won the 2024 Trager Award onlinelibrary.wiley.com/page/journal... #protistsonsky

okt.toUnlocking the potential of protist researchA new collaboration will tackle major technical challenges currently limiting protist genomics, helping to unlock the potential of protist research for biomanufacturing, sustainable agriculture and environmental applications.

Thank you @dackslabecb.bsky.social for all your effort in making our (protistologists) society journal stronger. I am also particularly stocked to be among the recipients of the William Trager Award for the “outstanding paper in the Journal of Eukaryotic Microbiology” in 2024.

My Summer 2026 Editor in Chief Message for the Journal of Eukaryotic Microbiology is now available. It talks about exciting developments at JEM over the past year (higher IF, the Trager Award) and things that we will launch soon. I hope that you enjoy it:) onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

I do not want to start an online discussion, but these clades were named without morphological data or cultures. I find this deeply disappointing. The usual etiquette is to leave such clades provisionally as “Novel Clade X”, leaving the honour of naming them to those who formally describe the taxon.

We wanted to share this asap for everyone to use ! This will remain a #preprint for the time being. We are happy to recieve feedback, hear whether or not ot works in your hands and continue to apply it across #eukaryotes as part of #ExÂME You want to know more : www.dudinlab.com/exame
