What a unique opportunity we had here at #ALPOLE#Sion with the @embl.org AML lab!
We sampled... a lot.
We worked... hard.
And we had a lot, a lot, but really alot of fun.
>30 ECR trained
>500 distinct samples across 2 weeks
+ too many protists awwwed at.
An amazing community growing.
Many eukaryotic life cycles involve a multinucleate <-> uninucleate switch. Here we build on beautiful prior work from Omaya & also @fritzlaylin.bsky.social to strengthen the idea that the cellular machinery (cellularisation = modified cytokinesis) and organisational principles are deeply conserved
Our recent work on #Cellularization of the #ichthyosporean S. arctica is finally out in its final form @lsajournal.orgwww.life-science-alliance.org/content/10/1...
Congrats to @margaridaaraujo.bsky.social@hiralshah.bsky.social@gautamdey.bsky.social & the rest of the team
A 🆕 #Ichthyosporea story
Led by@margaridaaraujo.bsky.social, in Co. @gautamdey.bsky.social & @hiralshah.bsky.social+🔥team across @embl.org & @sciencesunige.bsky.social
We finally have a look at what #microtubules are doing during #cellularization in #Sphaeroforma

Thx also to the various reviewers who helped us imrpove the work, @reviewcommons.org for a smooth process, @biorxivpreprint.bsky.social for making a platform to share the work rapidly & smoothly.
On ep 1, @oliverio.bsky.social and @hbrappap.bsky.social discuss the discovery of the ‘fire amoeba’ that can reproduce at the highest temperature ever recorded for a eukaryote! This organism is hot right now 🔥 literally and figuratively #protistsonsky

Happy to share our latest work showing that fungal cell fusion not only requires local cell wall digestion but also inhibition of cell wall repair!
PAK-family kinases promote cell fusion irreversibility by preventing cell-wall repair

I'm not going to lie, this review puts the various challenges driving multicellularity very elegantly.
For anyone excited about this field, this review is a must read.
And damn this video is very very nice !
Congrats Will, Kai and Ozan.
Out today in @nature.com: our review on how single cells evolve into multicellular organisms. With Ozan Bozdag, @kaitong25.bsky.social, Peter Yunker, and @matthewherron.bsky.social.

I am still a bit speechless but my main PhD project is finally out in Science Advances. It was a long process, but I am so happy with the final results! Massive thanks to everyone involved, especially my co-authors and everyone involved in sampling! www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

And to the #Ichthyosporeans team!
Wow, 280+ distinct samples,Agar, liquid & SCsorted in 5d! Obtained even from very wild spots (only discussed with drinks)!
A life experience, & hopefully some new frontiers opened.
But again, so much fun funny fun fun.
Its a blessing to work with you all. Really!
And to finish ! A very warm thx to my two Buddies #Tom Battin & @nikobiota.bsky.social - all seen here enjoying one last drink after the chaos.
For putting all of this together in such a short time.
To witness the new generation of ECR being inspired by such research is just a Bliss...
Thanks all.

The first paper of my PostDoc in Christa Schlepers group (@archaea-vienna.bsky.social) on the dynamics of Asgard archaea is now out in Nature!

This was a great team effort and I am looking forward to uncover the complex behavior of these cells further!
Our paper on the dynamics of Asgard archaea (Promethearchaeota) is now out in Nature!
Huge thanks to the reviewers for helping make the manuscript stronger.

UPDATE!: I am absolutely stoked that the second paper of my PhD is now out in @natcellbio.nature.com :D. We combined lipid imaging, STED microscopy, and mathematical modelling in a super cool team effort to quantify lipid partitioning inside clathrin-coated pits. www.nature.com/articles/s41....
We hiked, we microscoped, we sorted—and we’re excited for more! 🏔️🔬
Week 1 of exploring alpine microbial life with @sciencesunige.bsky.social , EPFL ALPOLE and EMBL's Mobile Labs, is about to wrap up.
First time fieldwork for some of us, sampling & on-site analysis for all.
#Classic#Science#Rant
Today our #ProjectGrant for the @snsf.ch was rejected.
Not going to lie, I’m disappointed. Thx to the reviewers, I think there are things we can improve for the next round.
But I struggle to reconcile “high-risk” research with the amount of preliminary data being asked for.
At some point, the requested prelim data looks like ~2 y of work for a 4y project.
We’re encouraged to go into uncharted territory, but they're asking for so much down-to-earth evidence beforehand. It’s hard to reconcile.
To Rev 4: thx for the comments/ no, we don’t work on choanoflagellates. 😅
My impression is that we’re seeing a shift towards safer, more predictable and more derivative science at least here in CH.
It’s a pity to lose some vision and courage along the way.
Next Call, we will have more preliminary data.
I promise
But will it still be high-risk ?
How "hot" is "hot" for a cell ?
Amazing work by @hbrappap.bsky.social & @oliverio.bsky.social & all authors.
Makes you think a tad about how a cell can polymerize its cytoskeleton at these temperatures !
#lipidtime: It's a lipid universe. Today in Nature we publish the Lipid Brain Atlas, the first map of membrane lipid composition across the entire mouse brain, a layer of organisation that cell-type and transcript maps had left out. #lipidomics#neuroscience#BrainAtlas
Our description of fire amoeba, 𝘐𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘢𝘮𝘰𝘦𝘣𝘢 𝘤𝘢𝘴𝘤𝘢𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘴, is now online at Cell! Thanks @oliverio.bsky.social and amazing team for questioning the limits of eukaryotes! 🔥

Busy week for #ProtistsOnSky
After some planning with Tom Battin & @nikobiota.bsky.social
The #Alpine#Microbial Workshop is finally here in #Sion!
We're grateful to all funders @sciencesunige.bsky.social#EPFL@embl.org & many supportive foundations & all our collaborators who made this possible.
For two weeks, our entire lab is dropping everything to focus on one mission: deploying @embl.org's Advanced Mobile Laboratory to cultivate microbial eukaryotes from Alpine ecosystems. Our dream? Isolating new #Ichthyosporeans never cultured before. Let's see what we find. 🔬🏔️
Must admit, ever since I was a kid, I’ve dreamt of seeing microscopy images of #protists in @lemonde.fr
Today, protists are everywhere, and several images were taken by the team. And seeing #ichthyosporeans there too?! 🥹
One step closer to showcasing the beauty of the invisible microbial world. 🔬✨
Commuting in the opposite direction this morning.
An awesome 2-week adventure with the whole lab, friends & colleagues coming from all over is just about to start in the #swiss#alps
Stay tuned !

The extraordinary diversity, biology and complexity of #protists pose significant challenges to the #genomics community. That’s why a new collaboration will look to address some of the major technical barriers for sequencing protists from bulk cultures and the environment.
Do you want to label the nuclear envelope? Do you work on a non-model species? Try Concanavalin A!
We tested ConA on various species across the eukaryotic tree and find it is a very useful ExM-compatible marker for the NE and ER.
