And just imagine the *gall* of it: telling the *military* let alone the world oh you know how you love hierarchy? Well guess what, you know what's WAY better, something that's closer to cooperative anarchy, where there's a lot of cooperation lots of error-prone little guys AND HE WAS RIGHT

bluesky started under twitter, and it feels like it. atproto feels like a protocol specifically designed to give twitter the veil of decentralization, but keep people virtually dependent on centrally-owned infrastructure. it's open just like the web, in that it needs a google in the center.

>inb4 it has small-world fallbacks, relays aren't required ok, but then you completely lose interaction counts, feeds, mentions, comments and any semblance of reach. it's an improvement on ActivityPub that's worse than AP (unless there's a big, expensive central server in the middle). bruh.

this is just a dedicated atproto hate account, istg I only ever check in to see if the protocol design has improved, and only ever leave disappointed that it hasn't, leaving an angry post on my way out god, I WANT this to be better, there's so many good ideas here yet it's just fumble after fumble

aside from the community, nostr feels like a good timeline version of atproto, where federation is actually happening and the community is actually building on it; the only thing it lacks are PDSes I hope bluesky goes bankrupt and the community takes over so bad, holy shit

Mastodon <> Bluesky It's not really about the technical side; it's about people and the community. Technical choices might affect whether an individual would move, but the community impacts greatly on whether they will stay. 1/n

Why does Bluesky require native video? Why not put all your energy into federation? Also wouldn't it make more sense to increase the character limit so peering with other services actually has a chance of working? scripting.com/2024/09/08/1...

scripting.comPeering in the social webDave Winer, OG blogger, podcaster, developed first apps in many categories. Old enough to know better. It's even worse than it appears.

Bluesky wishlist. Video and OAuth are coming soon as far as I know, so no need to wish for them. Easy stuff: - Bookmarks - Threading UI - Pinned posts Difficult stuff: - Private (shared) data - did:plc work, making the identity side truly open/portable - in-app audio chats (ร  la Spaces)

what's the point of hosting my own data if there's nothing wrong with the way the default Bluesky PDS works there's no advantage unless I'm paranoid, and if I were that paranoid I'd not be on Bluesky at all. it's also hilarious that to host my data, I have to give data over to the devs on Discord

hot take: with how self-centralizing ATProto is shaping up to be and how much the Bsky community seems to dislike the idea of federation, they should honestly just give up on it (for now, at least) and focus on making it a better community for their users imo xdd

and like, god damn, having been following frazee's work since the dat:// protocol, figuring out atproto made me kinda sad going from all these cool, completely decentralized, P2P experiments to "google but for social media posts" is a hell of a downgrade

Why couldn't this just be ActivityPub compatible so I can see everything in one actually working app

aaand yet another federated platform now has the ability to migrate accounts without losing posts!! hell yeah! mastodon.social/@box464/1114... I swear, I'll never understand why the mastodon folks seem so shifty about the prospect, the fediverse NEEDS this stuff

mastodon.socialJeff Sikes (@box464@mastodon.social)Sharkey, a Misskey fork, is pushing forward with post imports. Unlike other platforms that have tried this, Sharkey will not federate the imported notes at all, just import them to the account. Assumi...
