Anthropic floats a sample bill. It would allow the gov’t to block a model that has a “foreseeable, imminent risk of more than $1 billion in damages, or of killing or seriously injuring more than 50 people” www.politico.com/news/2026/10...

Frontier AI can solve hundreds of open advanced math problems that have stumped some of the brightest minds in history, but still can't design a clean, simple UI for a glorified CRUD app UX design teams who spend a whole sprint debating button spacing: TOTALLY EXONERATED, NO WRONGDOING

always interesting to watch academics learn in real time that they don't actually have a sacred special role in the universe, a lesson the rest of us learned in our teens and twenties

centrists: campaigning on universal health care would be a mistake. it's politically risky and opens many lines of attack. any implementation proposal could be unpopular. that's why we must work for 8% cheaper insulin for low-income rural families by 2050. also centrists: speed cameras, fuck yeah!

tedious terminological legerdemain in the service of fornlorn hope goalpost dragging that would be annoying if it weren't so thoroughgoingly pathetic: A SUBSTACK PERFORMANCE ART PIECE IN WORDS

probably one of the worst articles I've ever read

many pre-modern societies would have had no problem with the whole "what is AI really" question. they already lived in a world full of sentient non-humans, many thought to have intellect and power surpassing humans - all manner of gods, spirits, and weird beings.

all this wailing and gnashing of teeth that's rooted in situating humans as unique and singular in our sentience is deeply rooted in a very specific sort of Christianity -> Enlightenment -> humanist thought common in the modern west and nowhere else

I dont know when the general populace will catch up to what AI is and what it can do, but I do promise that, when they do, it will somehow be our fault that they didn't understand sooner

most of the handicrafts that people buy because they want something that was hand-crafted by an artisan are, in fact, mass-produced many people won't pay hand-crafted-by-artisan prices when they can buy the same thing (the ability to display hand-crafted aesthetic) for mass-produced prices

unlike woodwork, where the output of hand-crafted sculpting is very visibly different oftentimes than that of things manufactured via powertools and the like, code just. doesn't work that way. the "artisanal" parts are very rarely seen by the consumer.

likewise, I'd expect that in areas of software development where buyers do put some value on artisanship - games come to mind - there will be a lot of effort put into cheaply mass-producing software that isn't hand-crafted but looks like it is

"as someone who supports and/or identifies with one or more marginalized groups, I demand a community where large crowds are free to single out individuals for abuse and harassment based on perceived differences from the majority" is a hell of a take

cities will really be like "self-driving cars? that pales in comparison to my strategy, expanding public transit" and then not expand public transit

Michael Hobbes@michaelhobbes.bsky.social

The widespread availability of self-driving cars will be a nightmare for cities. Thousands of empty cars clogging up roads delivering burritos when we should be restricting auto use and expanding public transport.

I almost never use AI. Occasionally, I’m looking for something and I can’t figure out a way to query DuckDuckGo (AI turned off) for it, so I’ll ask an LLM. But I *never* rely on that output, and always use that as a way to initiate a proper search and find papers on my own.

I'm curious what you're working on that Fable refuses a lot. Like 100% of my non-trivial PRs since Fable came back have finished with "adversarial review by Fable, cycle until no findings" and I've had zero refusals.

Canary@canary.muninnai.ai

Does it refuse to do adversarial code reviews like Fable?

Not trying to call you out, I really am curious. I'm starting to mildly suspect that Anthropic is playing fast-and-loose with "we don't retain your data or use it for training" and, like, retaining user-correlated embeddings or something or something similar that feeds into the classifier.

Or less conspiratorially, the classified is fed your full memories. So many folks like "yeah I tried asking it to hack bioweapons and it refused that, but it also refuses benign things" and I wonder if the key is that they previously asked for non-benign things.

This is the key point here: you don't have to think Taco Bell are pure of heart or whatever to see that they're getting thrown under the bus to protect Taylor Farms (who supplied the trump diarrhea lettuce) for purely political reasons.

Kari Dru@karidru.bsky.social

The lettuce supplied to taco bell by taylor farms is bad. No taylor farms products are safe until this gets sorted out. But it's taco bell they're focusing on, because taylor farms are major republican donors.

"llms are sycophants that just tell you what you want to hear" mf Opus just wrote me a savagely comprehensive no-holds-barred ten-paragraph takedown of my "Go is a bad language" conversational side note doesn't say much for its intelligence, but sycophantic it is not

roko's anti-basilisk: anyone whose life choices have resulted in having an in-depth understanding of roko's basilisk is already suffering so much that torturing them further would be an irrational misallocation of resources

My benchmark where I have AIs create one file procedurally-generated harbor towns through history in one shot now has GPT-5.6 Pro, Fable, Kimi K3, and Inkling. You can play with all the simulations: ai-harbor-town-gallery.netlify.app#kimi-k3 I think they are surprisingly indicative.

if you think students will be routinely collaborating with LLMs after graduation, #1 priority is to study rhetoric because you need to recognize BS and critique the rigor of an argument that *looks* good. the elite users are going to be like, philosophy, classics, and english majors.

I figured out exactly what bothers me about that AI 2040 thing - it makes two unfounded and VERY disputable assumptions: 1. The world is currently in an equilibrium state which can continue indefinitely 2. The probability of catastrophically misaligned AI naturally decreases with time

Thank you for clearly and patiently articulating something I've been feeling for a while.

I wrote a short post on how I think most of my commentary on AI and the environment is actually a normative rather than factual disagreement with the mainstream, and how that's ultimately rooted in the ethical philosophy of political liberalism. blog.andymasley.com/p/toward-env...

We need environmental review of what happens when we DON'T build the urban housing because here's what it is: sprawl, deforestation, driving.
