Absolutely NO on Prop 38

Katie Wilkinson@drkwilkinson.bsky.social

I'm usually 100% for new science funding but a definite NO on Prop 38. There are plenty of currently functioning Immunology labs at CA universities and biotechs that should be able to compete for state money, not just a billionaire's institute with no currently employed scientists.

Students from North Carolina A&T can be seen marching back to their HBCU after voting on the first day of early voting in the state. The Guilford County Board of Elections voted to remove the school’s on-campus polling site. (video via Todd Simmons) greensboro.com/news/local/g...

Random dumb thing: RSC removed the ability to log in to their manuscripts using ORCID, but you can use Web Of Science, I don't remember my WoS details, but guess what... WoS will let me log in using ORCID so... RSC <click>, WoS <click>, ORCID (log in) which takes me back to RSC which now logs in 🤦

Do you have unmet CryoEM needs? Do you dream of beautiful rotating protein structures. UNC's CryoEM core could be the solution to your problems! www.med.unc.edu/cryo-em/ Contact Josh Strauss joshua_strauss@med.unc.edu to hear about the cutting edge resources availble here! Please share!

Stopped in to get boba and one of the workers was wearing a Texas shirt, I started chatting with her and told her I was an alum… y’all, she’s never been to Texas, knew nothing about the school and welp, I am convinced her choice to wear that jinxed us today #TotallyReasonableTakes

preordered my copy! In addition to Debbie being one of the absolute best and most generous long time members of the chemtwitter (RIP) and now chemsky communities, she is also a phenomenal spectroscopist. Even if she weren’t both those things, this just looks like a great read! Order yours today!

We are about 6 months away from my book, RESONANCE & RADIANCE, being released into the world. (April 13th, 2027!) RESONANCE & RADIANCE is a narrative nonfiction book about spectroscopy—the field of science that studies how light interacts with molecules. I want to share this book’s origin story 🧵:

This morning's sunrise in the Botanic Gardens in the West End of Glasgow. #glasgow #sunrise #kibblepalace #botanicgardens #architecture #architecturephotography #glasshouse #glasgowtoday

ok it's question (confession) time for US drivers only(?). What, to you, does "When Children Are Present" mean on a road / speed sign? I admit I am never quite sure... is it only 25 mph if I can *see* children or is it a blanket *during regular school hours* as I assume children are at school?

This is absolutely a scam and everyone should vote NO on prop 38!

Jonathan Eisen@phylogenomics.bsky.social

CA prop 38 is a scam - vote NO. For example see: This CA proposition will send $4 billion to a single nonprofit. Who’s behind it? calmatters.org/politics/ele...

NIH folks... didn't R03's used by $200k for 2 years? It looks like it's limited to $50k direct costs per year now - but I'm seeing a bunch of R03s in Reporter that have the 'old' budget, did they get them in under the wire? With grad students support in the ~$70k p.a. that's a tight budget

We are hiring a postdoc! #Chemsky Looking for an expert in instrumental analytical instrument maintenance...I mean chemistry, specifically LC-MS, HPLC, GC-MS. Method development expertise with new analytes, and natural product isolation/identification are good!

*sigh* it's always Econ professors... I don't think there is a singular group of faculty that somehow believe they are more qualified and 'know better' than any other on a college campus (and I say this as an Orgo Prof!) (1/2)

Tim Curry narrates this 2011 commercial that speculates about how the world would change if cats had thumbs. But cats & dogs DO have thumbs, just not opposable ones. If you look at their paws, you may notice an "extra" claw, 'digit 1,' higher up than the others. Let's learn about dew claws!

Physicists in Science / Nature:

Andre the Chemist@andrechemist.bsky.social

I think the difference is we will take published work (a "This MOF binds CO₂" paper) and hyperbole it ("The MOF that solves climate change") It seems like physics uses the pages of Science and Nature to report experiment results like we would talk about in a group meeting

Huh… very cool and I need to read this… also, would have been cooler to see it do olefin metathesis 😉 /s lovely chemistry from @shenvi.bsky.social

Jake Yeston@jakeyeston.bsky.social

Fascinating @science.org paper for chemsky from Ryan Shenvi’s group this week, where instead of making cyclopropane from a carbene and an olefin, they make it from three separate differentially reactive C1 sources in an iron-catalyzed sequence www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

what the hell!?

John Trant@trantteam.bsky.social

I couldn't, for example, start openly calling all Scots to be fraudulent scientists, who are only on faculties because of Tartan-DEI, because a certain Scot has published a bunch of irreproducible clap trap. I can say that this person published irreproducible clap trap. He happens to be a Scot.

I’m pretty sure the ACS (as chemists experience it), is a convenient distraction from the publishing arm of the process. If someone would like to disabuse me of this motion, I’m all ears (not really, it’s Saturday)

Kelly Sheppard (he/him/his)@kstrna62.bsky.social

ASM's logo evolution really captures their field and how it has changed. What does ACS's change say about chemistry? Or is it more about how the society has changed?

In no small part my reaction to this was that Rich McCormick gave a clear lucid and reasonable response. Am I gonna be disappointed if I google this guy and find lots of horrible stuff?

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Rep. Rich McCormick defends Darlene Graham McCORMICK: You can gotcha on anything. I promise you, if I if I get into the weeds with you -- and you're really informed -- I can stump you on a few things. BERMAN: But I'm not a US senator
