🌿 Irish civil society are at COP17 with our largest ever delegation. At a time when multilateralism, science & nature restoration are under pressure, civil society presence matters more than ever ‘Taking Action for Nature’ requires progress on funding, rights-based conservation & perverse subsidies

If climate change didn’t exist, air pollution alone would be reason enough to end fossil fuel dependency.

An estimated 1,500 people are dying prematurely in Ireland each year because of exposure to air pollution, despite the country meeting all existing European Union air-quality standards.

I truly can't recall an issue where the government have so openly worked against the will of the Irish people. Time and again, polls have shown this is a fringe position in Ireland and yet FFG are fighting tooth and nail for it. This represents a fundamental change to how we identify as a country.

Sepp was a renowned scientist, but more importantly, a decent human being who was willing to speak up for what he thought was right. A key example was his active support of the Nature Restoration Law. Rest easy Sepp.

We mourn the loss of an exceptional scientist and one of the most effective and powerful international voices for nature of recent generations, Josef “Sepp” Settele. Sepp was a pillar of IPBES’s success throughout its existence. He was a champion for better-informed policy for people and nature.

WE WON. Lead in gunshot will finally be banned across the EU! Just now, the European Parliament approved in plenary the Commission's proposal to restrict lead in gunshot. This decision ends years of debate on one of Europe's most persistent forms of lead pollution.

🚨Today, EU ambassadors approved the Council’s position on speeding up environmental assessments. Fast-tracking permits for “strategic” projects risks rushed assessments and public consultation. Now it's time for MEPs to stand up for environmental rules that protect people, communities and nature.

Breaking news: invasion of wild boar! They destroy gardens and scatter rubbish. This is a good example from Portugal of how media coverage can sensationalise human–wildlife conflict. A few wild boar are simply foraging through a town, where food waste is readily available

Today is the 2nd anniversary of the Nature Restoration Law coming into effect 🎂 As fires & drought cause havoc across Europe the necessity for Nature Restoration is clear. We need to see an ambitious Nature Restoration Plan from government including dedicated funding & action on public lands.

Our mountains are on the front line of climate breakdown, and this drought is wreaking havoc on the high Alps. Rockfalls and increasingly dangerous glacier conditions are forcing guides to close routes, while mountain refuges are shutting their doors.

The loss of snow and ice cover in the high Alps will disrupt major freshwater supplies for millions of Europeans, destabilise local economies, accelerate regional warming, and push high-altitude species closer to extinction.
