The story here isn't the mess made while scavenging for cans. It's that our government have so thoroughly failed people, they've turned to scavenging bins in desperation. The "solutions" offered here are to the problem of *visible* deprivation, not the problem of the deprivation itself. #Spéirgorm

Hard not to think at least some of the bureaucratic cruelty surrounding these cases, which the courts have exposed and condemned, is part of Jim O'Callaghan's hardman act to solidify his profile as a future leader of Fianna Fáil. This should be disqualifying. www.irishtimes.com/crime-law/co...

I don't know that there is a template or a "secret sauce" or a clear-cut lesson to take from this. But if there is one it's the idea of treating social media as the hostile territory that it is, of actually acting like you are a participant in propaganda warfare and not like a consumer.

Ireland has some responsibility on this. One of the greatest contributions we could be making to collective EU & global democracy & security (far more useful then disastrous attempts to remove the triple lock) would be having the courage to step up to our role as digital regulator in a serious way.

it's literally this simple - I mean, have you SEEN the fucking idiots progressive parties keep getting beaten by? Stop engaging with them in good faith (they don't), and just start incessantly repeating what you will deliver - homes, healthcare, childcare and dignity for all.

I said this to @tonygroves.bsky.social on the Tortoise Shack last week - forget winning debates, stop playing on your opponent's home turf, and start presenting a viable, inclusive, sustainable alternative to warmed-over fascism.

What's striking to me are the rules of engagement and the methodology of action here, which more or less is predicated on burying liberal delusions about "debate" or the "marketplace of ideas". The rules were ultimately very simple: amplify your own message and suppress your opponent's.

I truly can't recall an issue where the government have so openly worked against the will of the Irish people. Time and again, polls have shown this is a fringe position in Ireland and yet FFG are fighting tooth and nail for it. This represents a fundamental change to how we identify as a country.

With the combined polling of Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael and Sinn Féin exceeding 50%, the idea that the government shouldn't silence civil society to please their own voter base is now a minority position among the political establishment. NOW is the time to join a party. Not after we've already lost

If you consider yourself a leftist who wants change, but have resigned yourself to believing that change is impossible, at least do the rest of us a solid and shut the fuck up about it. I'm sorry, but what are you hoping to achieve? Convincing others to give up hope? Getting them to stop trying?

I truly believe the first large left party that rules out propping up a coalition with FFG will be the catalyst we need to drive real change. Join one. Tell them that's what you want. Over, and over again. If they're sitting on the fence, start nudging until they're on the right side of it.

We need a wave of enthusiasm for the politics of decency. For the idea that politics should be used as a vehicle to improve people's lives. Enthusiasm for unapologetic idealism. Enthusiasm for the idea that better shit is possible. At this point, spreading nihilism and apathy are selfish choices.
